I put these on both of my 120's. Amazing! I used blue tape and eyeballed it off the lines on the bottom. I agree, if I'm off I can't tell. I can tell if it's not installed. I drilled the hole out in the back of the skeg, ran paracord through it and tied a knot. Great Idea and thanks for sharing!!!
That is awesome..you have solved my problem with my old style sit-in-kayak, with a flat bottom, and keeping it in a straight line on the sea is sometimes difficult. I have just ordered one! Thanks for a great video
Nice job! I'm making a diy skeg for my catch also. I'm probably going to be drilling some holes on mine though. I just can't help myself! I like to do things the hard way ;^) This, however, might be worth a share for folks that want an easy solution to improving the tracking on their kayaks.
zoffinger Easy solution?! Marty, I'll have you know typing in the word "skeg" into amazon's search engine was exhausting. Not to mention puncturing the marine goop open... lol I actually started off doing it the "hard" way, but figured this was more cost effective in the long run. I'll definitely keep an eye out for your vid though. Thanks for watching!
I guess if the skeg is removed by a lot of shallow water, you need to flip boat over to reinstall? I rigged a skeg off the stern of my Catch 100. This allows me to raise and lower while cruising.
Thanks for this video. I was thinking of getting a rudder or skeg for my journey 10 ss. The rudders are pretty expensive and you have to drill more holes into the kayak. I think this has convinced me to get the skegg.
I added this same skeg to my Catch 100 with excellent results also. Have you considering shortening it a couple inches? I'm thinking about experimenting with mine so it doesn't drag bottom when pulling onto a beach. I feel it would still be effective if it was two or three inches shorter. Can always buy a replacement for $12 worse case scenario. Also I drilled out my hole for paracord and got rid of the snap swivel attachment.
Hey Andrew I also bought a catch 100 and I was wondering the same thing. when you beach the kayak does the skeg come off or do you have to jump out the kayak and remove the skeg before you Beach. Or if you go in shallow water do you have to be worried about the skeg coming off. do you have to install it every time or do you find yourself just leaving it on there.
Does the fin come out of the mount when you unexpectedly run into shallow water or hit a stump or have you run into problems with it binding in the mount when under pressure at the tip? Please respond
The scuppers on the Catch 120 and 100 are in a row down the centerline of the boat. Tied a string to the middle of a nail, dropped the nail through the forward scupper from the bottom side. pull the string tight all the way to the rear of the boat, and eyeball to be sure the string is centered through each of the other 3 scuppers. Put to marks at the string with a Sharpie about where you want to mount the skeg...a straight edge line between the 2 marks is as close to exact centerline as you need. I measured the base and put a mark dead center on each end...line those up with the line on the kayak, then trace around the base with the Sharpie. now you have 360° of reference for placement, and you know exactly where to scuff up the surface to prep for the Goop! Worked perfectly on my Catch 120 and made a world of difference in tracking!
It's around 70 lbs. Can be awkward with car top loading, but I have a makeshift cart that I'm able to wheel it around on. I don't have too much trouble with it.
Cool but why did you put it in the back? Almost all skags go in the middle of the boat. Look at sailboats for instances or even ski boat. the skag is in the middle. Some ski boats even have two,not that you need to go to that extreme. heck, even the old crackerjack racing boats have the skags in the middle. I am just busting your nuts...

I like your idea , me being an old surfer I had also considered a skeg . Might make mine a bit shorter in height . Nice application to your kayak.

Doing this to mine after watching your vid. Thanks it was a great help.
Appreciate your reply about measurement of skeg base from the end of the kayak, Bill...looking forward to trying it out now on my Zydeco 9.
Good luck Rob!
The only downside is shallow waters when you get in the kayak. But I'm sure it's a minor thing to get around

How durable was this skeg set up? I am thinking of doing the same mod to my Pelican Catch 120. Thanks.
is the skeg still holding up with the marine goop because I'm going to install one on mine as well
Does anyone think TWO skegs side by side would work better?
Nice Video! Ordered one for my Catch!
Hope you enjoy it! It was a great simple upgrade for what i needed.
How much Marine Goop Did you
Use on the base for the install? I’m waiting for mine to come in the mail!
Certified bad ass mod
Brilliant. Neat install and nice mod.
Thanks for the video...i was think of getting a transom rudder or a bottom skeg....
Thanks for this video. I was thinking of getting a rudder or skeg for my journey 10 ss. The rudders are pretty expensive and you have to drill more holes into the kayak. I think this has convinced me to get the skegg.
Thanks! Hope it works for you!

I just got a Catch 100 and want to add a skeg like yours. Who makes the skeg you bought and what model is it? Thanks!
@@surfr8 it is available on ebay for $15.

You need to come ashore to re incert if skeg is removed in shallow water, or do without?
Great tip . Thanks I may add one to my Catch 120
Great idea. I am considering fitting one to the back underside of my Canadian canoe. will it help with stability?
Jim Scott no.skega are for making the boat turn because of wind.will not do anything for stability.
This was really helpful. Thank you!
Is the base of the skeg flexible so it can fit the contour of a rounded fiberglass kayak?
Does the fin come out of the mount when you unexpectedly run into shallow water or hit a stump or have you run into problems with it binding in the mount when under pressure at the tip? Please respond
thanks
Iam reading the marine goop. It says do not use on polyheline. That’s what my Lifetime tamarack is made of
How's the skeg holding up - marine glue still holding? :) Great video that's for the advice!
I no longer have the boat. I owned it for close to 2 years and it held during that time
Well; did it fall off?
i like the skeg idea! i was curious on where did you find the skeg?? because your right about have to correct yourself alot while on this kayak.
Thanks, Myteg9 I ordered it off of amazon. They have several models to choose from. This one was around $16.
Myteg9 when you type in "kayak skeg" it's the first item to pop up... here's a link though amzn.to/2mfXfyo
that is a awesome idea man👍👍👍👍👍
Which location should I put my fin middle or in back or the kayak
Rear
Hello, which glue did you use? thanks
I used Marine Goop amzn.to/2YeH9q8
@@BillsCatch22 thanks
Drag bottom too much for this, going to try a cheap retractable rudder off Amazon... I already have rudder mount. Wanting to use springs to center it.
How did you assure you had it installed completely straight so you wouldnt track just a hair to one side?
Again, I just eyeballed it. If I'm off by a hair, it is not noticeable.
How did you make sure it was glued on dead center? I'm afraid of messing up the angle.
Truthfully, I just eyeballed it. The Catch 120 has some nice lines to follow, so it wasn't difficult.

Does it hit when launching?
I launched it backwards
How are these as far as lugging around to luanch and transport to the ramp are they Heavy & okword to carry?

How is the skeg doing? Still holding up?
snatcher420 doing great! Keeps me tracking well. Much cheaper than a rudder and no additional holes in the boat.
Going to put one on my new Catch 120 NXT, next week Thx for video.
So did u install it off center of the bottom
KINGxLOSx18 ??? It's dead center...
Yeah I realized that after I watched it again lol sorry. An the reason I asked cuz I thought we had the same yak but I realized we didn't .
Maybe lubricate your skeg with vaseline so it goes in and comes out easier
That's what she said
Nice

poor audio in this video. Need to speak closer to mike system ; sounds like you are moving away from the mike.
mic*, not mike. it’s not spelt as mikerophone.
I wouldn’t call the video “install” when you skipped the install. Also, this could’ve easily been 2-3 minute video, not dragged out for 7.
