Normal cars have to do it like that because the wiper on the passenger side is to short and leaves a unwiped big spot in the upper corner, thats why they are mounted like that on normal cars and you have the line of water thrown to the drivers side. Mitsubishi Lancer has different windshields for RHD and LHD, so not that special... Those wipers are a bit more special.
In terms of design in the 90s nothing beats the BMW 7 Series E38 when it comes to elegance and beauty, but the S Class W140 has that imposing look that hasn't been matched yet. It looks great even if it's a bit too tall.
What I never liked about the W140 is the window line; the lower edge of the side windows doesn't look straight, it looks like it's sagging. Really annoys me and I can't imagine why they designed it that way.

Never have I read a figure of speech describe something so well haha 'carved from billet' is exactly how the W140 feels. The W220 felt and looked hollow in comparison
Hello from Switzerland! Mr. Kon, I have to say the following, I have some minty low mile fetish 140s in my collection and the cars still look massive next to a new W222. You can look down very well on the pleabian minions when you ride along in the 140. The 140 conveys a certain respectful dictator / plutocrat aura similar to the W100 600, which (unfortunately) no longer embodies the current luxury class vehicles. This is probably why the 140 was one of the favorite vehicles of people like Muammar al-Gadaffi, Putin, the Yakuza and Co. even when there were successor series to choose from. The space, security [extremly rugged in a serious crash, a kind of unique "chopped" ladder frame like a truck, plus (!) a unibody is a construction they have not done on any other mercedes except the W240 maybach which build on the 140 chassis, makes this car a "tigertank" that will crush the other car in a serious accident, newer big cars are build weaker for socialist partner protection in a crash to help the smaller car, so you can say 140/240 was the pinnacle of crash saftey in some way, to only protect the occupants of the 140/240 and crush the enemy car with no mercy] a long-distance suitability and comfort of the 140s are in no way inferior to those of the new luxury vehicles, unlike, for example, the very old-school 126 model. Good examples of the 140 series are expensive, some are above comparable 126s, which was not the case a few years ago here in Europe (minty 140 500/600 under 60kmiles, go for about 50k/CHF, and I guess will be encreasing further in future) I cannot understand the fear of some "control units", the electronics in the 140 are rock solid and really not rocket science, similar to the W124 E500 E420 E320 or all R129 up to ´98, sometimes even redundant and can still be repaired in the distant future, in contrast to today's cheap and over-complex electronics. In terms of mechanical durability and engine design, the M104, M119 and M120 engines are unsurpassed as far as the petrol engines from Daimler are concerned, provided they are properly cared for, that is the golden era of Daimler, something better was not built before and after. I think some are only now beginning to understand what epochal masterpieces have been created. Elsewhere in the world it was already considered a masterpiece that competed with Rolls Royce and Bentley and even degraded them, similar to the W100. It is not for nothing that the W240 Maybach builds on the chassis of the 140 series. An E32 / E38 or Audi V8 / A8, Lexus LS on the other hand, looks like a poorly manufactured mid-range car, the same with the unworthy supposed successor, the W220, which initiated the qualitative degeneration of Mercedes under J. Schrempp. The W220 actually was not the true successor of the 140, even if some may think so, actually the W240 Maybach was the successor/reincarnation of the W140. The development costs of the 140 were the highest in mercedes history with the engineers running the show and going truly megalomaniac, it was the last engineers car from mercedes and not a car, were accountants and shareholders made the development decisions. The ride, build quality and "aura" is unlike any other mercedes before and after, I have to say, these cars do have a soul.
To supplement my previous comment with pictures, the W240 (Maybach) is the successor of the W140, as the nomenclature also suggests, not the unworthy W220. The Maybach builds on the 140, here are pictures of some Maybach test vehicles. The unique M120 was unfortunately not installed in the W240, which debuted in 2002, for emission reasons, instead the so called M285, a modificated version of the M275 (65AMG). nast-sonderfahrzeuge.de/MB-Exotenforum/img/uploaded/image83258.jpg nast-sonderfahrzeuge.de/MB-Exotenforum/img/uploaded/image83257.jpg nast-sonderfahrzeuge.de/MB-Exotenforum/img/uploaded/image83264.jpg Greetings from Switzerland

I love you man! Keep up the great work! I agree with chopping 4" off the top. No brainer. And after 6+ years with the W140 S320 as my daily driver I honestly never even noticed the off-center cluster. But even esthetically I can look at that as a move to make the driver's side more driver centric - like a cockpit.

On the centre console placement, having owned a w140 and a w 220, I can tell you that the offset vents on the 140 works for quicker air distribution. Having said that it may be slightly different as mine was a right hand drive and I live in a subtropical region of Australia
How would you compare the feeling of the W140 Vs the W220? I currently own a W140 and have been driven in, but never driven a W220. The 140s definitely seem to have a more solid feeling inside...
5:24 Yeah, I was going to comment asking if the design flaw was also present in the right-hand drive configuration. Oh my. It was. (Due to the choice of countries in which I was raised, I'm too accustomed to right-hand drive and Metric readouts despite not being able to drive)
Yes! That damn misalignment of the center console and center vents has been a head-scratcher for me ever since the W140 first hit the scene. The other thing that bugs me is that the wipers sweep to the passenger side (for left-hand drive cars like here in the US). So weird. But I still absolutely adore my 1993 400SEL ☺️
If you look at 3:00 the wipers extend up and then retract for the wipe stroke. I think this was for the wiper to reach for the corner of the windshield. I don’t remember if my w140 did this but it is just another example of the obsessive engineering that Mercedes did with the w140.
I always loved this S class, I personally nicknamed it "the German cow" because was so massive and imposing, I remember when I saw one for the first time, looks so polished, well, it's subjective but I think was a great luxury statement, not what to expect from Mercedes Benz by the time but you can't notice this car, from an era when they build the best car at any cost.
my dad bought one brand new in 97. It was a long wheel base, champagne color and beige interior. it had a nice set of alloys too! best looking s class in my opinion. still looks good today compared to a lot of other cars on the road. Doesn't look out dated compared to the older generations. I think this is definitely the last proper mercedes built. they were built like tanks and for comfort which i dont see on any mercedes today. I was impressed at how steady the car felt when i drove it. doing 90-100mph feels like 40mph.
Best car ever, the mono wiper concept on the driver’s side plus a second regular wiper at 3’01” is one brilliant feature no other car has. All perfectly designed. Car also handles extremely well speeding for its weight!
You nailed it man, I thought i was the only one that got seriously annoyed with the W140 dash. Although easier to ignore with a nice leather dash or factory GPS My favorite dash is definitely the W221, best compromise in tech vs quantitative luxury
Leon P I was watching a video about his new car auction site and it turns out he actually did review a W140 he hasn’t released it yet. It’s during the part where he keeps saying “this”
This guy wasn't sitting in w220. The quality of the interior is the highest level the seats are the best, the interior of the SL model is the same as in S. it looks very nice live. Generally, the w220 is a better car, it only has a disadvantage in the form of shock absorbers that need to be replaced or repaired. The engines in w220 at that time had the most horses compared to other brands. He probably invented the mechanics story. He doesn't understand the round interior of the w220 because he only saw it on the monitor
It is always astonishing how humiliated 220 "fans" burst into discussions about other MB series with their rusty electronic waste called 220, that is exclusively reserved for my observations to the 220 fraction. The W220 has nothing to do with "modern and innovation", that was the car that initiated the qualitative decline of Mercedes under CEO J. Schrempp. At the most, Daimler advertising tried to sell this scrap as "innovation" to the end customer at the time, but do not confuse advertising with reality. The development was determined by shareholder value and financial accountants, the aim was to reduce costs and maximize the profit for shareholders, and the engineers were kept on a very short leash. You can see it in all the details, inferior soft paint in the interior, poor leather quality, cheap hinges on the boot lid that are openly visible, the piece of cable between the boot lid and body, the type of door construction - similar to a Golf IV - no longer flush with the body, the extremely poor sheet metal quality compared to previous series, the downsized engines that were designed for cheap production (only one camshaft per bank, only 3 valves per cylinder, "covered up" with double ignition), production of the V6 and V8 Otto engines on one line, delamination of the glass panes over the years, the suppliers squeeze for ever lower production costs of the inferior electronic components etc. These are well known facts in Mercedes circles. I have all S class models from the W100 of the late 60s to the current 222 and can report it neutrally, the 220 also as a facelift is by far the worst wreck that Mercedes has ever built. The 220 is very far from the comfort of the predecessor series solely because of its cramped space, and the poor quality impression. But you will know better, live on in your dream world and misjudge reality, because 220 in your twisted mind certainly has the brutal quality and comfort of a 140 paired with the electronic frills of a 222, for all other Mercedes connaisseurs the thing looks like an old Microsoft Smartphone with rust, electric problems and poor build quality, but it is difficult to discuss colors with the blind... ...and btw the host of this youtube channel drives a 220 himself. Best regards from Switzerland.

I own both the w140 s500 with the reclining rear seats and the w221 S550. W140 was way ahead of its time. Im also an active member at Benzworld. That centerconsole has a telephone actually.
Bruno Sacco was the head of design NOT the chief engineer. Side note, the head of engineering resigned after the launch of the W140. The whisper was because of cost overruns and the 12-18 month delay of the launch
I hatge half circles. A circle must encompass 380° and not only 180° or less as shown at 4:31. The square form of the real time clock in the middle of the 2 ventilation outlets looks ridiculously antiquainted. In the W140 at 4:48 the full circles have luckily been not 'abbreviated'. Just as they havae been preserved at 5:46. Traditional indicators and no flashing neon lights, the way I prefer them. At 9:50 the 'flattened' look is horrible. And the Mercedes Star is not integrated into the front grill frame, so it looks 'forlorn' on the engine bonnet. I guess the W201 is the last Mercedes model in which the Star was integrated. Apart from these remarks, Daniel Kon has rightfully remarked where Mercedes did not follow guidelines of harmonic design e.g. at 5:47. The interior of the Bently at 7:39 makes a rugged, unharmonious impression, whereas the dashboards of the older Jaguar models conveyed perfect British understatment at its best.
Reminds me right away of a designer talking about his Aston Martin Lagonda. No beauty at first glance but he refers to it as "2 wheels high and 3 wheels between the wheelbase" and for that reason being perfectly proportioned.
Wasn't the W240 (Maybach 56) the true successor to the W140? I mean it was even based on the same chassis as the w140. even though it share some electronics with the w220
Makes me want to pull my Pre face lift black/silver on black w140 v12 long wheel base with 40k out from storage... But then I remember the soybean wiring. 😬
Had the W126 500SEL then the W140 420SEL. Both superb cars way above their competitors. Only minor flaw with my W140 was the 4.2 V8 engine. More power than my W126 5.0 V8 but produced at much higher revs, so often revved the 4.2 over 3000+rpm whereas the 5.0 rarely need to exceed 2000rpm. But the W140 was exceptionally quiet and at an indicated 140mph was rock solid on the motorway.
I don't know about you guys ... but what makes THIS W140 special is the A/C HEAT vents above the center console .....I just LOVE IT.....Its like TWO WORLDS.......PROOR AND RICH.....They never gonna be SYMETRICAL ....if you know what I MEAN .....AND I MEAN IT!!!!!
This was really good!! Would love to see you cover some Land Rover redesigns... or the old to new Range Rover... if that’s something you’d even be interested in. There’s also plenty of tiny itty bitty changes between the different G-class redesigns too, would be interesting seeing some of those.
Been driving W140c for many years, but never noticed or got bothered by the exhaust vents in the front center dash... However, those in the back are not connected to the heating, so maybe that's something to consider. I consider the cabin height an advantage: You get better overview to the outside and it is more comfortable to sit in. P.S.: Don't look inside a BMW E38 ;)
That is a fair point, the asymmetry of the center console is the only thing I dislike. Getting a W140 with the Japanese navigation with TV function, makes things look better and makes the asymmetry less noticeable, but it's the W140... so I don't care. She is the sexiest S-class ever made. As a proud owner of a W203 and W211, I adore the W140 and have my eyes set on one as a future project car. Man the amount of money I'll have to pour into that car... But in the end it's gonna be worth it XD

I always felt as though I was the only person who did not care for the asymmetry in the dashboard. It is nice to see that others share the same opinion as I- that being said, I absolutely love the 92-99 S-class. I owned a 1993 300E and I was looking into upgrading to a newer later model S-class. But, the reliability aspect makes me nervous.
id say its funny because in some regions old people sometimes watch you park your vehicle andtryin to help you , translating how far you can reverse either by yelling or with all limbs. its a thing people often did back when sensors were not a thing.
The exterior is perfect as it is. The thing with the vents, well yeah, we can argue about that, as they could argue too back then in the design studio.
My guess has always been that because they went so over-budget on engineering this car, maybe somehow they saved some small amount of money by building every car with wipers that park in the orientation of a right hand drive model. But don't quote me on that.
Are you mistaking with the W126 Wipers ,Yes they do wipe the wrong way on lhd cars but are correct on rhd cars . W140 Wipes correctly for RHD or LHD,it changes around the other way .

Greetings from Switzerland
@@levoilenoir8799 totally agree with you. The V240 has been a dream car for me ever since I learned of its existence a few years back while I still owned a W220 S500 with the also rock solid M113 engine. I'm Still saving up to buy one...
Meanwhile I was bleeding just paying my 1 room apartment in Geneva, Switzerland 😂
I agree
I am in Switzerland too, having w140 in mint condition, 130k km, maybe we can see your , do you have videos or photos?
This was the most epic, overly fetishistic thing I’ve seen in forever. I love it.
You are now making me appreciate Mercedes much more even though I still don't think they are my cup of tea for the most part!
That omg at 7:49 would of been a good place to flash Patrick Bateman freaking out over business cards. Deadringer for delivery.
The w140 is truly the best ever built by Benz
W126 is also great
Nah fam, its the w201 that is the best ❤
I just bought a 1999 Grand Edition w140 for $2000 lol the guy had no clue what he had he just purchased it from his neighbor but the sad thing is it sat in the sun instead of garage
Maybe it hasn't symetric consol design but still its magnificent with everythink and this concol is part of this magic.
Song at 5:53 is Saved by the Bell by Miami Nights 1984
Well… opening UA-cam and the first thing I see… amazing!
To be honest, that 4" shorter version looks amazing.
4:07 i think thats a c215, if i remember correctly the w220 didnt have the start button on the shifter
The height is perfectly fine! Leave it alone!
W140 is perfect the way it is. Take it from me, a german car hater and proud of it 😝.
flaws or not , this will always be my favourite s class. i take over a new one any day
I love this channel already. Excited about your future videos like this
Great video, very interesting, love the comparisons of the interiors. Please do one of these for the Lexus LS model!!
Yes the W220 was one of the best looking Mercedes ever made. Still looks absolutely great today. But even better for me is the W211 E Class.
100% with you👏🏽
W140 is still the KING!!
I feel the same way about the current w222 with the merged gauge cluster/infotainment. It just looks wrong to me.
I have two W140 and thinking to buy another. Great cars and you water my time.
@6:47 wuh?
This channel has great potential. It will hit 1 million sub by the end 2020.
The R129 has an asymmetrical dash vent as well, but the left edge is in line with the console. That small change makes a big design difference
Honestly, I'm fine with the height as it is. I've loved the W140 since I first saw it. Magnificent motor. And that's from a Jag man.
W140 was my first car , best car ever
Ugh I love... I love... I looooove, the lack of symmetry. It's so quirky and beautiful, in it's lack of predictability.
I’m glad it wasn’t four inches shorter. I’m 6’1 and I fit just perfectly in my ‘95 S600 with a couple of inches above my head.
If you think the dash on the w140 looks off, look at the r231 dash. The command screen is waaayy off center. It drives me nuts when I look at it
This is such a smooth and relaxing video, informational and entertaining, really digging this music.
my dad bought one brand new in 97.
Watch my latest vid. It's about deep w140 details. You'll like it.
You nailed it man, I thought i was the only one that got seriously annoyed with the W140 dash. Although easier to ignore with a nice leather dash or factory GPS
My favorite dash is definitely the W221, best compromise in tech vs quantitative luxury
i agree, w221 is best compromise
2:20 LOL Doug Demuro on the right 😂

@@GilZu ... THISSSS... Is a 1992 Mercedes-Benz S-Class!!! LOL
HAHAHAHHAHA this one made my day
I’m still puzzled why he hasn’t reviewed one yet
Leon P I was watching a video about his new car auction site and it turns out he actually did review a W140 he hasn’t released it yet. It’s during the part where he keeps saying “this”
10mins of my life i'll never get back
@Perry Elyod I guess
I own a W140 and I enjoyed this video haha
The w140 console looks so nice and it is NOT shifted, it’s design to look that way makes it beautiful I LOVE it
This guy wasn't sitting in w220. The quality of the interior is the highest level
the seats are the best, the interior of the SL model is the same as in S. it looks very nice live.
Didn't think I would watch the whole thing but you kept my interest, nicely done
Mr Sacco needn't feel so bad. For me, it's the tall one. The height is what made it so amazing, so imperious. And that's what an S-Class is all about.
Bruno Sacco a self made chief engineer born in Udine Italy .
So it was Italian German design and German engineering
I LOVE MY W140.. BEST S CLASS EVER!!

The w 140 and the g wagon are timeless classics designed by holy intervention
michael jackson that was well said.
YES!!! Great comment! I have a W140 500SEL and that thing is like a vault on wheels... LOL
I’m not bugged at all by the lack of symmetry. Love it.
YOU ARE A GENIUS . I AGREE....THE 4 INCH.... YES . EXCELLENT JOB !
Bruno Sacco was the head of design NOT the chief engineer. Side note, the head of engineering resigned after the launch of the W140. The whisper was because of cost overruns and the 12-18 month delay of the launch
The prestige of W140 is above all luxury sedans 🇩🇪
Is that an affectation or an affliction?
Do a video on the 99 e46 (pre bangle design)
Enjoyable video however now I can’t ever unsee the console symmetry flaw! Damn you!
I always felt the wheels were too small for the car's size and power. Great video btw.
KING♥️🤟We love w140💪😎
So sorry: Please read 'Bentley' (and not Bently), typing error. I hate semi-circles.
Never noticed the centre console, now I cannot unsee it...
I found my new favorite car channel
5:20 For Park Sensors I’ve now installed some old people
Makes me want to pull my Pre face lift black/silver on black w140 v12 long wheel base with 40k out from storage...
But then I remember the soybean wiring. 😬
8:32 As an R129 owner and lover, I feel personally attacked and expertly trolled. Well done.
Top of the DAY. INTERESTING point, thanks for the different views.
100% agree about the vents, but i liked the bank vault-iness of the original, especially with those big brabus wheels
I like the boxiness of the car, even the interior, that helps me get over the vent location.
You don't apreciate cars made for quality , made by engineers , get an audi and buy some oil for the engine in the way
That is a fair point, the asymmetry of the center console is the only thing I dislike.

I love the symmetry you get the BMW E39.
E39/E46 has some of the best interiors, especially black with brushed aluminum trim. Timeless
@@sasazapadnik9335 my e39 has 350000km + on the clock. Smooth as 6 cylinder and interior in tip top condition.
The exterior is perfect as it is. The thing with the vents, well yeah, we can argue about that, as they could argue too back then in the design studio.
The ultimate s class would be one with this body and the interior of the new ones. Someone make it happen
Why didn't you talk about the weird windshield wipers that wipe from the wrong side? Literally my pet peeve with the W140. Why did they do that??
My guess has always been that because they went so over-budget on engineering this car, maybe somehow they saved some small amount of money by building every car with wipers that park in the orientation of a right hand drive model. But don't quote me on that.
Are you mistaking with the W126 Wipers ,Yes they do wipe the wrong way on lhd cars but are correct on rhd cars . W140 Wipes correctly for RHD or LHD,it changes around the other way .
@@MercS600W140-600SEL-LORINSER No they don't, every W140 I have ever seen has wipers park in the RHD position.
You pleabian minions, i will illuminate you! I will let myself down to explain the magnificence behind this design, the wipers are mounted like this on the 140 to have the utter most visibilty under rain, the line of water is always thrown over to the passenger side on the 140s, not like on normal cars to the drivers side, it was overcomplicated to achieve this. Normal cars have to do it like that because the wiper on the passenger side is to short and leaves a unwiped big spot in the upper corner, thats why they are mounted like that on normal cars and you have the line of water thrown to the drivers side. On the 140 however it is turned around in a sophisticated overengineered way, the one wiper is on a kind of rack what extends out to wipe the upper most corner on the drivers side, that is why it can be turned around to not have the "line of water" thrown in the drivers face like on normal cars. The RHD drive 140s have the same thing the other way around, it was very expensive and totally overengineered to do so, that is how crazy the engineers went with the 140. The RHD 140s even have a differently shaped front window, it is totally megalomaniac. I know this shit because i have 5 140s in my collection. Greetings from Switzerland
