Things are that bizarre in the original manga, but idk, it works better and still feels creepy when you read it. Adapted to anime (and one with absolutely horrid production like this, no less) definitely takes the wind out of it and makes it feel just absolutely goofy Lol.
@@BlockKickPunch it works better because there's a proper build up to all these events, there's more hints and context to these events and they are skipping A LOT of that here, making things seem random and unintentionally funny.

The fact that they had FIVE YEARS to animate four 20 min episodes and (at the very least) 1/4 looks like a fucking PowerPoint presentation with moving jpegs, is genuinely a disgrace. Junji Ito deserves so much more than these 2 absolute booty cheeks adaptations he unfortunately had to slap his name onto.
That's the crazy part to me. Like, if this had 12/13 episodes it would be slightly more understandable, but it being this wack with only 4 episodes is kinda crazy.

Adult Swim allegedly fired the studio that was in charge of episode 1 due to the "over usage" of resources involved in the production and time, which was completely necessary...

(No spoilers) I read the entire manga yesterday, and stuff was paced differently. Like the hair thing was a chapter, the snail kid was a chapter, the jack-in-the-box kid was a chapter, the teen couple was a chapter, the lighthouse was a chapter.
These things didn't happen simultaneously.
Though I have to admit it didn't make sense in the manga that she'd stay in the town (so far) after surviving all these spirals. The anime had a better idea of these weird things happening simultaneously so that they all escalate at the same time and would be too late for her once the madness has become unbearable, but it was just executed badly.
yeah i like the idea of multiple things happening at once but not at the cost of removing buildup
Any horror story needs time to breathe, to build up suspense. Cramming 5x different stories into a single short episode... of course it's not gonna work, what the hell. The first episode did it right by having only two and a half stories going on. That was fine.

For those who want a clearer explanation for the drop in quality, here's what the executive producer had to say on cbr:
The executive producer of the Uzumaki anime series has spoken up about the show's downward spiral in quality for Episode 2. Jason DeMarco, who's also the co-creator of the Toonami action block on Cartoon Network, revealed what went wrong with the anime adaption of Junji Ito's most famous work.
DeMarco spoke up on the social media website Bluesky about Uzumaki Episode 2's sudden drop in quality, which aired on Oct. 5, 2024, on the Toonami Saturday night block on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Although DeMarco later deleted his comments, his revealing posts were screencapped and spread online. "It's fine, we knew this would happen," DeMarco said in a series of deleted posts. "I can't talk about what went down, but we were screwed over, and the options were A) not finish and air nothing and call it a loss, B) Just finish and air Episode 1 and leave it incomplete or C) run all four, warts and all. Out of respect for the hard work we chose C. After waiting so long, it makes sense people would be mad. Unfortunately, I can't tell them who to blame it on... but someone is definitely at fault here, and we all just had to do our best when things imploded. Maybe others would have made different choices. We did the best we could with what we had."
"But again, a lot of people worked very hard on this show, and I didn't think the actions of just one or two people should be the reason it never saw the light of day," DeMarco continued. Maybe that's the wrong choice. I truly don't know. But those people have a right to be annoyed and disappointed. I'm glad you are digging it." The series premiere of Uzumaki was highly praised for its haunting visuals that brought Ito's horrifying artwork to life. The critical acclaim for Episode 1 was unanimous, with many believing the "curse" regarding adaptations of Ito's printed works had finally been broken. However, the dip in animation quality for Uzumaki Episode 2 was anything but subtle. Clips of extremely stilted animation, poor lip synching and inconsistent drawings -- seemingly a complete 180 of the animation in Episode 1 -- began circulating on social media within minutes.
While DeMarco didn't go into detail about what went wrong with the production of Uzumaki, the series' development woes have been well-known since its initial announcement in 2019. The highly anticipated adaptation of Ito's famous horror story took five years to air, suffering three critical delays. The third delay occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic when the entertainment industry was struggling to adapt to working remotely. DeMarco even joked about the series' "cursed" production in a recent interview with Vulture
My thoughts: I feel so bad for everyone who genuinely worked on this and wanted this project to succeed including fans and non fans, like myself. At least we got a top tier 1st episode that we can look back on but it could've been so much better even with the studio switch up.
I had a feeling the studio would get pressed for time, just like MAPPA with JJK. The constant rushed deadlines and terrible work environments will seem to be a recurring problem that takes down the quality of many good projects
Honestly, even with the downgrade in the visual animation, the writing and the atmosphere is still there, there is still a clear effort to get those "Close up, grossout, body horror" all of those as authentic as they can. It's really a bummer, really sucks. But hey, I still think this is still leagues better than maniac or collections.
The anime was delayed THREE times, they had over 5 years from it's announcement to work on 4 (FOUR) episodes in black and white only for the animation and direction to fall apart in the 2nd episode. So far it mimics a spiral alright, a downward one.

@@reikkuma1 no i think they meant the rushed time LITERALLY is what caused the delays in the first place. cause the demand for such good animation like the first episode takes time, and im sure the studios were given a deadline that was just not possible for that demanding animation to happen. so demanding animation + longer work time = more budget required to pay the staff, which, judging by the first episode mustve been FUCKIN expensive. so they decided to cut corners and change studios and fire the original director to save money, which in turn is a long process.
We dont know what happened behind the scenes either so there could be a year or two where they had to figure that shit out and rearrange or scrap. not to mention the producer stating they got screwed over which we don't even know what that means (could be studio related or budget related we dont know) and that in itself wouldve have taking a shit load of time to figure out also.
in the end, all it boils down to was a lot of people being so passionate in giving justice to itou's work, only to be completely fumbled by many unfortunate circumstances, restraints and really, decisions. I just hope the other two episodes are AT LEAST decently animated for itou's sake.

the quality drop is not just in the animation. they didn't do a good job of mashing all the different chapters, that span over time, and there's still more stuff they have to fit in before the beginning of the end

I know Uzumaki is like the poster child of scary manga, but how am I suppose to be shivering in me timbers when I see 2 kids having a shounen hair ass-off in the courtyard. This shit goofy as hell.
All of Junji Ito's works have always been horror comedies more than full on horror. Shit like the spiral hair battle, or the GAY SNAIL SEX SCENE are meant for you to focus on the absurdity, or even hilarity of it. Though the incredibly detailed artwork still does an amazing job at unsettling you, no matter what.
That's part of what makes Junji Ito's works stand out so much. It's just a lot of fun

Yk, Junji Ito's stories tend to be more ridiculous than straight up scary so ofc if you speedrun the story like this the involuntary comedy enhances like hundred fold

In my opinion, it just comes with the territory of new anime nowadays. Obviously a lot of people focus on animation so that's gonna stick out like a sore thumb when it's not on par.
Episode 1 was amazing though! It hooked me instantly and was rightfully creepy just as well as all of Ito's works! (I've not read any of them to completion, Uzumaki included, but his work is amazing!)
This episode gave me complete JJBA vibes but it was still interesting to see the downward spiral of the townspeople play out!
I hope the last two episodes bounce back like you said, because as of right now it's only going to serve to push new potential Junji Ito fans, who are really animation-picky, away from his work!

The story currently goes
The team working on it has "someone" within the studio cause major production problems that kinda screwed the whole project, they were left in a position to either ONLY release episode one (the good one) and cancel the rest, cancel the whole project, or .. just make the rest of it despite the massive internal restrictions preventing them from doing what they actually want. It sounds like the actual team behind the anime is as upset as we are that they couldnt do it to the quality they wanted, but after so much work was already done they didnt want to just cancel it either.
TLDR higher ups probably cut budget, they said fuck it well do it with no budget rather than doing it not at all
I know it's weird to watch this, but Junji Ito create his stories with a double interpretation at least. So, I want to comment about the simplest one: The teen couple running away together. It's clear that they made the ultimate decision drowning them in the sea waters, their bodies twisted and interlacing with each other it's a symbolism of their promise to each other to stay together even after life.
The meaning of spiral - uzumaki in Japanese if I can translate that correctly - have many means in different cultures, in my culture we believe that spirals can be used to drag and get rid of bad "things", unfortunately I don't know the significance of "uzumaki" in Japanese culture.
