No, it's NOT the government's responsibility. All people are responsible for their OWN actions. And no, there's NO constitutional right to live on public property, or on someone else's private property. People have to either fit in to society, or live as outcasts. You have a very privileged mindset having no idea what the housing is like on the island, not to mention the fact that the services offered by most charities in the area have unreasonable expectations for certain groups of house less individuals especially those who suffer from varying degrees of mental illness which can lead some of them to addictions and then they have no option but the hospital for a brief stay if the hospital will actually admit them or to continue to be on the street since the shelter regulations don't account for certain groups within the house less community. I understand there are those who are simply being irresponsible and milking the system but that is NOT the majority. I've watched housing prices more than triple here and options for renting be super limited especially with the amounts being asked for rent vs. the wages in the area. It's pretty lame. The mainland can send the homeless here but if we want to send the homeless to the mainland they have to have family and the family has to be willing to take them in. That's why we are stuck with all the homeless from the mainland, this needs to change. Send them back to the mainland without that unnecessary law that we need to contact their families, that's stupid.
If you believe that the majority of the homeless in Hawaii are from the mainland flown here. I just don't know what to tell you. It's bull. That rumor was started so we don't have to take a serious look at the issues other than a nuisance issue. The majority of the homeless are displaced locals, kanaka and malihini that came here thinking they could succeed on $800 a mth. The problem will just get worse until we acknowledge it and recognize that the issue is also tied to the fact that more locals and indigenous Hawaiians are living off island today than ever before.
@@brentsnyder5564 Well I can't say for the Big Island but on Oahu there's lots of homeless from the mainland I work with various neighborhood communities and the residents tell me that they talk to some of the homeless and they said that they came from the mainland, so they are near the airport extending all the way to the Waianae area. If you see them you can tell which one is from the mainland they look like they don't belong. It true that rent is very expensive but lots the honest good ones that's not on drugs go into small homes or shelters. The druggies stay on the street because they know they have to follow all the rules it's sad but they need to stop the drug uses.
Although I agree with many who has said that the government provides lots of help and that is true but I believe from experience and I am not home less but became disabled in 2020, right around Covid19, there aren't enough people or classes to tell you how to go about claiming aid or benefits. For me, I am lucky that I am educated, with computers, in a nice apartment etc etc but many of these individuals don't have access to computers, cell phones and instructions on how to leave the world of the HOMELESS. On the other hand, there are many that do not care. As an ex professional in the Medical Field, many of my patients don't know anything about the healthcare world or what to do. So I guess my point here is, communication, one on one communication and showing people with patience, dignity & respect what to do. Feeding them doesn't solve the problem. They need to be taught how to continue on living. Many have drug issues. Those uses need to be addressed etc etc. I am not the world expert on the Homeless but as a community, we all need to be involved and don't say....to bring the homeless to my apartment.....that isn't what I mean. It's a tough challenge which the Federal/State kept looking the other way and unless tackled from the root, it will not change! And yes....these homeless trespassing on Private Property isn't cool and yes, landlords need to pay taxes etc etc I completely agree a 10000% but education is essential for these people.........throwing them a bone here and there isn't the answer :)
It is the responsibility of the county and state. There's an ABUNDANCE of state owned/managed land to offer for a homeless encampment. The county and state are likely too afraid of liability to offer that option openly to people. Look at Norwegian countries and how they care for the imprisoned and the less privileged. Those countries are safer for a reason.....they take responsibility over these issues and take action.

Thank you county officials and officers for cleaning up these illegal encampments. We need more of this. aclu has no place representing transient criminal drug bums. There is more than enough space and services available to those in need, if they would only accept the offers. Most of them choose and prefer to camp where they may, because drugs, mental issues, and degenerate behavior. Either they accept help or be forced out, into treatment, and or jail.

Well let's look at this ok. Most services for homeless people are located in Kailua-Kona and Hilo. So yes they will be in populated areas where tourism will be. Two sure alot of people experiencing homelessness are drug addicts or alcoholics. But so are a lot of non homeless people. Addiction to drugs and alcohol are becoming a social pandemic in Hawaii. But we don't ever ask, what's so wrong with modern life that people need to escape it with mind altering substances to cope and then they get addicted. Same with homelessness. It's not fun and it's scary, but just because it gets comfortable like domestic violence gets comfortable to it's victims doesn't make it a real choice. Most become real addicts after being homeless.

A billion dollar industry. Imagine having that success rate at your job and keeping it. But much like the drug treatment industry it's not that worse than the homeless and poverty service industry. But these are the solutions to homelessness that we offer.

Why does everybody forget about God who came to save the sick, disabled and the lame. Why does the government want to take God out of everything when he is the one who shaped this world but man always want to be God not like God or play God but be God. What are you doing to help these people, think what would God do for these people, His people. The land, everything including the money, the land, the people, the riches, the government even the Churches all belong to Him so why is everyone trying to get rid of the homeless. How can we not have enough compassion for people we think nothing of when that's exactly what God did for us mere mortals when he sent His only beloved begotten Son to save Humanity this Earth that we all think we have a right to and a right that we think we can control? When it is not ours in the first place it all belongs to Him that He gave to us freely so why shouldn't we all give back freely to what was freely given to us because it is all of our responsibility as a whole so we should all come together freely as a whole for the Love of God weather you beleve or not but there is no fighting against forces that you do not know or understand there existence and sometimes it's exactly that for us to not know or understand. I believe the best solution is to create a park where there is electric, bathroom & showers the bare minimum for the homeless to reside a place where they can lie there head in safety. I believe the homeless would be more than grateful for a place like this and they would be ok with living in tents that they would be ok with volunteering in keeping the place near, safe and secure. A person like .me would be more than happy to oversee that others would take part in making sure that the place is taken cared of as a whole because it is all of our duty and responsibility as a whole. I do not like to speak out or write in fact I dis like it because I feel I shouldn't have to because it should all just be common sense or knowledge that shouldn't have to be spoken. However, God has a different plan and these are His words pouring out of me right now. There are people in my family who started life with 22 million in high school I started with 'o' had a car wreck ended up homeless and the last ten years cops destroy your tent take your stuff and fine you for it If the money they paid cops to attack us went to building micro houses and assigning jobs to homeless with a case worker the problem would be solved
