      I don't know what happened with the copyright, but I used to have the man who invented the fanned fret guitars (Ralph Novak) work on my guitars back in the late 80's. I sure hope he owns the copyright. We lost an amazing guitar tech back then because he chose to devote all his time to building his fanned fret design guitars and basses, and I supported that move. I still have my old Charvel that for years after he refretted it was smooth as glass.

    • @purungo
      @purungo 3 роки тому

      @@DingleBerry88 Its a matter of how you look at the neck. If you slice it lenght wise, the section is always going to be straight, so it would be same as a normal guitar. But as you move the slice up and down, the angle of the straight line changes from going front to back to going back to front.
      Bending, though, probably wouldn't be the prettiest thing ever, which I think is why that's been done on a bass.

    Saw a video a few years ago about a boutique guitar show somewhere showcasing really unusual stuff. The best thing I ever saw was the one guitar that had a mechanism inside that alternated the signal from the neck and bridge pickup back and forth, like turning a blend knob. It sounded like a fricken univibe built right into the guitar.

    I’d take the Relish and the Vila. Also loved the twisted bass! I’ve built a, comparably very mild “twist” in the necks of my acoustic builds, for years now. Customers have LOVED it! With a carefully engineered and cut nut and saddle, it works great. There’s no negative effect on tone, pliability is improved, and goes a long way in reducing wrist and hand stress for marathon playing sessions.

    Sadly it was burglarized, but I had for a while and get to keep my memories. I have other guitars and while,they are ok, probably even better I have never have never been able to identify with them quite as well.

    Dude! This show just stopped at my local store yesterday. I got the chance to check all these out in person at Bananas At Large in San Rafael, California. I had no idea that the event was happening, but when I got there it really wanted to go up to the guy to tell him that I saw him on your channel, but there were a bunch of people waiting to talk to him. It would have been cool to let him know that your channel has boosted his visibility, but he was busy at the time.
    The Wide Sky was gorgeous. The Didonato was so impressive to see in person.
    There were way more guitars that you didn’t feature that would all be worthy of their own showcase video.
    It was also really cool that the event had the vibe where everyone was welcome to pick up and play the guitars. It appeared that they were all on sale, since they all had a price listed. The cool thing is that it feels like an art exhibit, but you’re not usually allowed to physically interact with the art - but this exhibition is all about the public interacting with the art.
    UA-cam tends to make things seem larger than life. But this show is literally a couple people in a Winnebago with a bunch of expensive guitars visiting local mom-and-pop music stores. My local store is definitely not a super-prominent guitar store, but they still were able to host this event.
    If you have a local guitar shop, check their calendar to see if this show is coming to you. We don’t get many chances to see instruments like this in real life.

      @duffman18 4 роки тому

      That's the thing with quality guitars. You never wanna actually use them for gigs because they _will_ get damaged. It's the law of the gig. I've heard of people using Squiers for gigs instead of ever bringing fenders. A squier you don't really mind if it gets scratched. Or people using epiphones instead of Gibsons
      Unless you're big and successful enough to employ a guitar tech then you have to be careful what you bring to play with. And even then, disasters can happen. SRV's iconic strat was completely destroyed shortly before his death, because a stage fell on it. I think they screwed on another neck to it but it was never the same

    The lesson on the last guitar is, if you want to make noise musical, you need to build your music to a point where it makes sense. But that does seem strange to do with this instrument because it seems to cut the note when using noise, so its hard to build around it, its either one or the other, not both at the same time. Maybe rythmically would help, but that seems to limit it.

    I am learning guitar and that last one looks like a wonderful playground. My art is ceramics. And most instructors (I am still learning) are blown away by my ability to not form an attachment to a peice. Aka. I like something and want to play it safe. Where as I only see what I like about said pieces and what I can do better. This frees me to experiment and play. Basically let me try something I never done before. Let me expand. Unless I am pushing/improving my technic I rarely do the same thing. So I will throw 40 tea bowls. But each one is different trying to tweak the one thing or another.

    I must admit that I don't like every one of these and certainly wouldn't look to buy but its nice to see some builders looking outside the box. The first seemed more conventional but that ONI was 'interesting' - not sure I would want it but the craftsmanship is great...

    You know its a good video when you hear it suggested that "it would be like 2 1/2 hrs long" and your dissapointed that its not! I have watched a couple of your vids and. I find them non-flashy, pretty basic and to the point, almost like your buddy shot a video for you to see something because you couldnt be there. Very cool chill vibe. Good player and its seems interesting enough. Im subscribing based on your vids being a great 8 on a 1-10. Keep it simple, interesting and informative and your channel will continue to succeed. Thanks..look forward to seeing upcoming vids and watching vids you have previously done.

    I didn’t realise how old this video was until this moment. That Greta is amazing. Of course anything referencing Greta Garbo is going to be made of Swedish wood! I wonder if the nods to the Hagström Kent binding were intentional also. And yes, I saw the Gretsch style pickups.
    It was a beautiful amalgamation if some of my favourites and distinctly its own thing.
    I have Diego Vila tastes and a used Grote budget.

    What I'm liking about Rhett Shull is he's playing different guitars with the same clean tone settings on the amp. Amazing guitars.

    The switches on the last guitar were pressure-locking. You'd need to push harder and they "click" into the "on position". Dual functioning when turned off, they'd function like the buckethead kill switch. Allowing for rhythmic pulsing of the desired effect. You can even hear the guy click one on and off in the video while he was talking about it.

    Rhett! Your filming, your subject matter and your style presenting said material has improved to a highly professional level! I subbed your channel, quite frankly because of your affiliation with Rick Beato. But! BUT! Now I look forward to your videos and the variety of musical subjects you present! Keep it up and thanks much! Love the on the road Vlog stuff. Really, lets people know what it entails and helps appreciate musicians much more in today's digital climate! Keep on Keepin' on Brother!

    As a point of reference, David Torn played a Teuffel for a while (maybe the same model; certainly some of the same features) and Billy Gibbons has been seen onstage with a different Teuffel model.

    The Wide Sky was awesome - sort of maintained an acoustic property with electric tone. The other stuff is a no go with the twisted necks. At least when a neck is straight, you know where it's supposed to be - but how on earth would you know what went wrong with the twisted neck and which way you adjust the truss to remedy it?

  • @aylbdrmadison1051
    @aylbdrmadison1051 5 років тому +3

    The twisted neck cracks me up because what it's catering to are guitarists who think it's more important to look cool than to play well. Perhaps a higher position *and* using the twisted neck will be an even greater improvement, but just the twisted neck alone will never be as good as simply raising the guitar by shortening your strap. I personally think the low slung guitar look went out of style after Led Zeppelin broke up, and since then have thought it looks silly. But looks and logic are not so much in contrast in my mind.
    That said, as someone who built cabinets and furniture for decades, that's a marvel of woodworking skill, unless it's done by a CNC machine. Even then, engineering it was pretty cool.

    • @demesisx
      @demesisx 5 років тому +1

      I have the exact opposite opinion. The twist in the neck is an entirely ergonomic modification that won’t even be registered by nearly anyone who isn’t told about the twist. So, it’s not AT ALL about looking cool since it looks normal to the causal observer.

I thought you did a vid with a Plek or something at Righteous...and shhh, don't tell my wife I asked, I'm still trying to recover from the Tele I bought only a coupla months after the Gretsch...hehe

    "The stradivarization of the electric guitar is nowhere near complete." (Uli Teuffel)
    He is an awesome, really nice guy. When it seemed that each and every luthier was nothing else but copying Strats and Les Pauls, Teuffel came up with that quote and a guitar that was nothing alike any other. I think, you even made a video about the »birdfish«.

    Some, like last one with no regular tuning keys, seem to have a strange balance point worked out. No headstock and tuning keys takes away neck dive, but extending the body along the top of the neck adds it on again.

    How would someone play that last example? You can't use your thumb on most of the neck.. Maybe Tom Quale could make proper use of that; maybe. The Italian guitar with all of the brass on it looks and sounds incredible. Didonato is an artist. He apparently only makes one model, but what a model. How much would something like that cost?

    Rhett, can you go more into how the guitars influenced your playing? Every guitar I pick up affects me differently and I play them differently, or I play old things on new guitars.
