Cosell's analysis here is dead on... and way ahead of its time. A courageous commentary.
When one has integrity, courage isnt needed to speak the truth.
Say what you want about Howard Cosell, but as a black guy, I always admired and respected him for courageously speaking out on racial injustice and defending black athletes like Tommie Smith and Muhammad Ali. He was the first to refer to Ali by his Muslim name when other sport announcers insisted on calling him Cassius Clay. RIP..
joe jones Cosell was one of the best friends black athletes ever had. It was a shame what Joseph Lowery and the NAACP did to him over the silly “monkey” comment.
@@swami1 Yeah, I remember that. He referred to Alvin Garret of the Washington Redskins as a "little monkey" during a MNF game, but it wasn't racially motivated and that's coming from a black guy. Garrett was a very small player, and Howard was speaking in an affectionate manner.
joe jones And Cosell referred to his own grandkids that way too. Read his 3rd book “I Never Played The Game” and you’ll see how Lowery made his life a living hell. The incident broke his heart.
Vin Scully once referred to a jugged fly ball by Cal Daniels as "a monkey playing with a football." Crickets. Canonization has its benefits 😇
@@lwmsonhe said the same exact comment regarding Mike Adamle in an exhibition game between the New York Giants and the Kansas City Chiefs. Adamle was white.
Holy cow, you have to praise the man for his ability to stand up for these guys especially during this time period when they were facing near-universal condemnation in the media and public
He did this supporting Ali, it was his Jewish faith that gave him the courage to stand up and make these commentaries
52 years and we're still fighting this battle. I hope that 2020 will be a turning point worth remembering
So 2020 was not a turning point. Tragic! Tragic!
Damn Cosell, I'm impressed.....
Only Cosell ! What a iconic journalist, a ONE of a kind.
I could NEVER have done better than Cosell myself!! Well said, Howard!! :) :)
That was a bold statement from Howard Cosell two years before I was born.
This guy went hard!!
Yes Howard Cosell
I ♥️ & respect this man totally.
Howard...tell us what you really think. Respect.
"... He's aware of backlash and has had it for 400 years." ✌️
cosell always meant the very best. he's one of the few announcers or teams that make a big fight feel like a big fight for me. i can't explain it better than that, without howard cosell, jim lampley, or a few others, they don't feel like big fights. here he goes way beyond sports and sticks his neck and his job out to try and give a little bit back. he makes a living, after all, in part on the work of spectacular black athletes. ali made howard, surely, but howard had his back and helped him whenever he could. that's how it ought to be.
tell it Howard!
This was Broadcasting as it was meant to be. In 1968, ABC was owned by an entity named "American Broadcasting Companies." Not Cap Cities, Not Disney...ABC in 1968 had in its employ, several Giants of the medium of Television; people who understood the importance of Broadcasting. People like Leonard Goldenson, Roone Arledge, Howard Cosell and Jim McKay - and many more, both on the screen and behind the scenes. Mr. Cosell's editorial was ABC at its best; along with Mr. McKay's reporting of the tragic events at Munich, 1972. These are the moments that transcend quotidian reportage - the powerful, visceral moments that touch human hearts and souls forever. It was Broadcasting, "The ABC Way." Regretfully - it's all gone; because sadly, when it comes to people like the aforementioned: "They're All Gone."
Wow - what wonderful words from the great Howard.
0:32 Do you hear this, Laura Ingraham?!
She, hannity, tucker wd hv shot this ⬇️ like comments on Breitbart would.
Interesting I HD never seen Howard Cosels post commentary before and it strikes a chord for human decency everywhere.
He did this many times. Throw a little decency to the viewers.
Hoo Hoo Cosell telling it like it was some 53 years ago... And how he lambasted the USOC in the process. The fight goes on.
Wow. That took my respect for Howard Cosell way, way up! THAT was real courage in the flesh.
This man called it for what it is here! Tough!
And this was 1968 . . . 😩
Howard is spot on
Omg I didn't know this type of criticism was possible in American tv back then with all the background and social tension at the time. Spot on though.
I agree with Mr. Cowell. Thank you Mr. Carlos, Mr. Smith, and the late great Australian Mr. Norman for the stand you all took that October day in 1968
HOWARD !!! BOMBAYE !!!
Howard Cosell Telling it like it is 💯💯💯😎
Tommie Smith and John Carlos were right.
And flew to Australia to attend Peter Norman's funeral and pallbearer his casket.
do you have a longer version of this broadcast?
Hi Alejandro & Allison. I'm sorry, this is all that I have.
@@ShatnerMethod Thanks man Keep up the good old news uploads
@@ClassPresidentAlejandro1999 Will try!
Would ♥️ to read comments at Breitbart if this was posted there.🤪
Boom!💣💥
Why don't you tell us what you really think, Howard? :-O :-D I remember this incident very well and I agree with Cosell 100%.
WOW! If howard could say that in 1968 then everyone in 2022 should be able to do the same!!!!
Preach. Musberger went typical..
I never could stand Musberger to begin with. After I read (years later) about his malignant commentary on Smith and Carlos, I switched the channel on any event that he was announcinng.
Too bad no modern announcer has had the balls to stand up like this for the peaceful protests of athletes across multiple sports over the last 4 years.
Are you kidding me? Nearly every noted talking head have been jerking these SJW athletes off for the last five years.
@@KaiserInGilroy2K Really? Show me one clip of them not tiptoeing around the subject so as to not upset anyone with the particular league they are covering.
@@tylersimmons6524 Watch an episode of First Take or Undisputed that has aired over the past five years. I’ll wait.
@@KaiserInGilroy2K Nick Wright at 8 am on a network nobody watches ain't Howard Cossell on national tv in primetime. I'm talking Mike Torico, Al Michaels, Jim Nance, Joe Buck, etc. People who are the faces/voices of a network calling an organization out.
Maybe Dan Lebatard would do something like this
Tommy Smith and John Carlos Won! Peter Norton gave them the gloves
That's the truth. I don't know who doesn't like it. Why do you think one is wearing a left and the other a right!
@@gilthorp And he got shun by his own people just for standing with them on the podium.
He didn't give them the gloves. One of the two American athletes forgot his pair, so Peter Norton made the suggestion that they could each wear one.
@@chanthing correct.
Peter Norman participated in by wearing a pin in support
Howard Cosell and his rambling commentary and bloated ego got on my nerves to the nth degree.
But he ALWAYS saw athletes as people first. He respected an intelligent point of view, even if it was unpopular.
He was spot on with his analysis of the USOC and their actions. He actually was angry as he called them out.
He just “got it.”
