This video is one of the best explanations I've seen for people who are unfamiliar, and in a weird way it reinforces what I love about the game and helps me not get caught up in the tragedy of whatever transpires in an individual match; fantastic work :).
this game has a ping system, where you can place a marker for your team to see on the map. there's several types of markers, but the most frequently used is the marker for "enemy missing". this ping is made to alert you team that your lane opponent is missing, and is likely heading somewhere else on the map to wreck havoc. this is not all the enemy missing ping is used for however it's more commonly known as the "question mark ping", due to it being shaped like a question mark. if a teammate makes a bad play, another teammate is likely to be mad with them, because a death means that the enemy gets stronger. they will spam question mark pings as though to say "what the fuck was that?" there was also a brief time period where a ping known as the bait ping (originally made to signal a teammate to bait an opponent towards you) was used in a similar fashion, it's icon was a curved fishing hook, but if you put the center of the hook around a champions neck, it looked like they were hanging themselves with a noose. this ping was also known as the "kill yourself" ping. it was quickly changed after just a week or two in game, and then completely removed around 6 months later

One thing you also forgot is that they have multiple music albums released for free to also _sell us skins_ . Edit: Brand and Annie being a support character still hurts my soul. They were mid lane mages until the release schedule of new characters and reworked older characters increased the mobility in that lane so much that the relatively immobile mages had to find new homes.
Annie is no way in shape or form a support, she did have a support meta in the past when her shield was broken but right now she only works as a solo laner, Brand is a Jungler right now
I’m sorry I haven’t played League in like a year and a half give or take, did I read that correctly, Annie and Ryze is a whole support now?? And Brand is a whole Jungler??? Tf y’all been doing to the game since I been gone?
@heartless7494 yes, but still, it's kinda misinformation to say that they "all" have 3 abilities, which it is true most Champions do, not all do, and though most of these people probably aren't gonna play the game, it's still good to know some Champions do have more than 3
how dare you for this because the deeply confusing and unapproachable nature of this game is the one thing keeping me at bay and youre making it make so much sense
I played LoL from early 2012 to early 2014, and this video is giving me absolutely horrible flashbacks. Like some kind of deep, traumatic memory resurfacing.
Thank you for this video. I've never touched League (MOBAs are really not my thing), but I've always been curious what it's actually like. Now I can be confident I haven't missed out by racking up 7000+ hours in FFXIV instead.
As someone who's never going to play this game, it's so interesting to actually know how it works now! I feel like I'm a bit in the know now and that's delightful.
Thanks for making a League video aimed at casuals that doesnt just trash talk the game for 30 minutes for the memes. Its such a fun breakdown of what league is like from a beginners perspective, while missing some of the really in depth stuff that only a veteran will care about. Im just happy you gave it a fair shake, because to me League is a super fun game.
Not only is the video itself great, I absolutely love the part on Illaoi mentioning how her kit beutifully reflects her personality and belief. This is the first video of yours that I am watching, and I ALREADY LOVE YOUUUUUUUU ( in a normal way tho)
as an arcane fan who tried to get into league, the tutorial was so confusing in that it didn't explain what i was supposed to be doing at all that after 2 hours I gave up. This video was much more helpful so far. LoL should hire you as the new tutorial xD
I miss the original "Jerks Guide to" titles. Personally, I think "Jerks Guide to League of Legends" would have been a better title, but I'm excited to watch the video all the same! 🔥
I miss them too. I'm considering going back to it soon, but I already did "The Jerk's Guide To League Of Legends" in April so I thought I'd try a new title for this.
My guess is that it's a combination of: It's a meme. Spent so much time on the game they feel like quitting would make that time wasted. And probably the biggest reason: League has really high highs and really low lows. So you can love and chase the highs while still hating and dreading the lows.
@@LoveOlsson98 i agree for me its a mix of i played for so long i cant not see all the poor balance decisions(im a hater of new characters). but honestley if you play for like some dumb fun not trying to get super good or anything i think the game is fun
I get it and don’t at the same time. League is fun to play, it’s just that the people who play it can sometimes be subhuman filth. Slurs, inting, griefing etc
I remember a few years ago, I played League for a few months because my third cousin was into it. I think he was among the higher ranks with his friends iirc. Though it definitely wasn't a game I could fully commit to and have since stopped playing, I did enjoy the time I had with it. Morgana/Kayle were the two characters I played the most and boy did I have with them. Hopefully LoL can still be fun for the people that do play them.
13:51 at the beginning? Yes. Later on? Vision, securing cannon minions (support item has an execute on minions when you have a blue orb around your character, up to 3, they recharge and go away when your support item gets to tier 3 (final) where you choose the form it takes, on tier 2+ you can use it to set wards (vision), which opens you up to getting an anti-ward on your slot usually occupied by a ward), some roaming (Bard wants to roam, and Pyke's job IS to roam, because his ult gives both an ally and him the gold for killing the enemy, and also other supports can roam too), and babysitting the adc.
describing support as the role for being a hater is so real. I live to be an annoyance to the enemy first and a help to my adc second. (tho i was very surprised that apparently people who write "glhf" are the most toxic? in my experience it's the people who mock the glhf who then end up spamming chat & pings by min 15 lmao)
as someone who just started playing from being roped in by friends i find it hilarious i picked my main before i had even seen arcane just cause he was a little guy and then i find out heimerdinger turns out to be your most hated character and a really good counter to teemo, it makes me happy to know i'm capable of making teemo players suffer
12:52 Slight correction here, depending on the character your abilities can do ability power or attack damage. Your basic attack (auto-attack) does AD exclusively although funky items can make it do some AP too.
I got suckered into this, thinking that it was like lore shit that happens after the events of Arcane. I’m gonna stick around though because he suffered for our entertainment.
In my former LoL friend group I was the ONLY one that would lock the camera onto my champion. Everyone else left it unlocked, and that was only revealed to me when I had to play for one of my friends (i had given up on the game at this point in time). Idk how ANYONE can play by moving the camera with the mouse cursor >_
So the real reason people say the game sucks is because newbies are dead weight to a team of decent players and it's easier to deter people from the game entirely than to wait for a new player to gain the 1k+ hrs necessary to be an actually good teammate? 🤔
I played league one time, played exclusively bot matches, and only downloaded the game in the first place because a friend of mine wanted someone to play it with. Before our first match, I watched a bunch of random youtube tutorials on how to play, which gave me exactly 0% useful information, because every single one acted like the person watching the tutorial already new how to play the game. You've somehow managed to make a better tutorial than every other tutorial on youtube, without even trying to do so. I think its telling that every person on this platform making videos about "how to play LOL" creates their videos with the assumption that you already play LOL. Kudos for you on making the only good league tutorial, which only functions cause it's not a league tutorial.
30:48 I FOUND THE FNAF JOKE! but seriously, ive been a league player since 2019 and this video is excellent i wouldnt even mind more videos about league on ur channel Rowby, keep up the awesome work
From one Teemo enthusiast ton another - my favorite build: Liandry's > Sorcerer's Shoes > Malignance > Shadowflame> Stormsurge > Rabadon's. Run Dark Harvest + any cooldown runes you can get. This is, I'm pretty sure, the most bang for your buck if you want to prioritize shroom efficiency. There are other builds which will technically give you more damage per shroom, but this is close behind those. And you get a new one every 11 seconds. Every game that I hit full build with this, I always get at least one free kill at some point because some poor fool walked over one while fleeing a teamfight. Not just limited to low HP targets either. I have seen a shroom at full build kill a full HP Lux. My crowning achievement is making the entire enemy team buy sweepers, and even then they couldn't fully stop the shenanigans because of how frequently I'd get a new shroom. 10/10. Highly recommend.
I'm really glad you used some animations from LoR! That game is amazing. I'm especially happy that you know about Illaoi's level up animation, because it is PHENOMENAL.
The League of Legends that was made in 2009 fundamentally no longer exists. Everything created back then has been modified or outright removed so much that it no longer resembles its original form in any way. If you care about anything ever, please don't play this game.
Rowby, even if this video does horribly, please don't let that discourage you from doing this variety stuff because god damn, this is one of your best videos.
I'm grateful I had a chromebook growing up I couldn't download it on when I learned about League because I already forgot everything I just learned from this video and doged an addiction
As another Teemo fan... Solidarity, and a wonderful overview of this weird game, its often terrible community, and the deathgrip it maintains on me even when I don't play it.
Been playing fairly actively since season 3, made my account and played a few games off and on since season 0. I think your explanation is perfect for anyone new to the game. Once you get to the point of have well over 5k hours, every ranked season since season 3 under your belt, and played every champ you lose the ability to really explain this game in a way that normal people would understand. At this point I could quit and have quit playing, but its been so common place in my life its impossible to leave it forever. Solid video and very funny!
I think it's much fun to play with friends. Because if you can't do that you have to have a lot of patience and anger management issues because not all game sessions are gonna be fun. If you play solo you're teamed with 4 other random players and that will always be a random situation.
But there's also a Tutorial and A Game Mode where you can practice against AI bots so that at you can warm up to playing a video game. If Arcane is what made you decide to play the game then it's fine if you play or not but League can be fun if you want it to be.
As a quite recent player myself (picked up the game around 2-3 years ago), you can still very much pick up LoL if you want to. I know of three different means to do so : - have a friend teach you, probably the easiest way, but not required. I didn't know anyone that played league when I started, I still managed fine. - use the in-game learning resources. When you first start the game, you get a tutorial describing the basics, like how to control your character, navigate around the map and throw spells. This will give you an idea of how the game is played mechanically (also referred to as the "micro" in League speak), however it won't help you much figuring out how the game works in details, and what to do at any given time and situation (referred to as the "macro") beyond the broad lines. - To acquire said macro, I recommend simply watching other people play on UA-cam. There are some great tutorials out there, but the game is really too vast for anyone to grasp in one video, so you will learn things gradually by watching others, and learning from your mistakes. Thus I find it quite helpful to simply see how high level people play the game themselves, even better if they make it a habit of explaining their thought process. Usually it's better to pick a content creator that plays the same role as you (i.e. top laner, mid laner, jungle...), but in general I recommend watching PekinWoof. He is a very high level mid laner, uploads frequently, and makes a lot of effort to speak about his thoughts during the game, and how the different champions work. He is also very chill, almost never being negative to others and soft spoken. It's okay if you do not understand most of what's happening at the screen at first, everything will make sense eventually, you simply have to focus on what you understand and trust your brain to pick up patterns. But that said, you will still need to play a lot of games over a lot of days to become fluent in LoL. Keep in mind that you will be matched with and against people that have more or less the same skill level as you, so it shouldn't be that much of a painful experience, but getting your ass kicked is part of the experience even for seasoned players ! However it is pretty fun, especially with friends and if you stay away from ranked. Good luck on your journey, if you were to embark!
You know if I could just figure out how the hell to make custom loadouts I’d probably be addicted to this game Update: I’ve grasped how it works the suffering will commence there’s not much it can do to me by this point though I already play both For Honor and DbD regularly and like both of them
@ I don’t understand the actual creation like what to put where how purchase order work all that stuff maybe if I go play the game a whole lot it’ll make sense but I haven’t played a whole lot so impass
@22:50: Too bad Irelia players will never know the feeling of being countered by a Heimer, she is the single best matchup into him in the entire game. Nobody comes close.
37:34 Dawngate, a moba by EA made a solution League hasn't tried yet, that seemed to eradicate most of the toxicity in the samplesize of the players. Essencially they tied the leveling system to being nice in the game and by extension the ability to play ranked since you had to get to max level to play it and if you ever got banned for being toxic you had to do it all over again.
While the leveling system hasn't been tried specifically that way, League did have a point where leveling enough to play ranked took months and yes if your account was banned for toxicity, you had to start over. It led to a rise in bot accounts that could more efficiently level up. The rest of that story is too long for comment sections 😅.
Many years ago I managed to play LOL for about a month blissfully ignorant about everything going on, I must have done decent because no one screamed at me and I got to play however I wanted. this game has a ping system, where you can place a marker for your team to see on the map. there's several types of markers, but the most frequently used is the marker for "enemy missing". this ping is made to alert you team that your lane opponent is missing, and is likely heading somewhere else on the map to wreck havoc.
this is not all the enemy missing ping is used for however
it's more commonly known as the "question mark ping", due to it being shaped like a question mark. if a teammate makes a bad play, another teammate is likely to be mad with them, because a death means that the enemy gets stronger. they will spam question mark pings as though to say "what the fuck was that?"
there was also a brief time period where a ping known as the bait ping (originally made to signal a teammate to bait an opponent towards you) was used in a similar fashion, it's icon was a curved fishing hook, but if you put the center of the hook around a champions neck, it looked like they were hanging themselves with a noose. this ping was also known as the "kill yourself" ping. it was quickly changed after just a week or two in game, and then completely removed around 6 months later

As a long time league hater (and player), this is a FANTASTIC video for the uninitiated and an absolute comedy for those of us who have succumb to the disease that is League of Legends.
*I'm editing this to add, that this is by far the funniest comment section I think I've ever come across.
That is quite possibility the strongest opening 7 seconds of a video I have ever witnessed.
Tbf annie still works mid, she's just hard
Annie is no way in shape or form a support, she did have a support meta in the past when her shield was broken but right now she only works as a solo laner, Brand is a Jungler right now

did you forget that the video is for people who aren't going to play the game? it's a negligeable amount of champs, just forget it
@heartless7494 yes, but still, it's kinda misinformation to say that they "all" have 3 abilities, which it is true most Champions do, not all do, and though most of these people probably aren't gonna play the game, it's still good to know some Champions do have more than 3
how dare you for this because the deeply confusing and unapproachable nature of this game is the one thing keeping me at bay and youre making it make so much sense
As a support main, I can agree. Nautilus players need to be put on a list.
Putting a naut player on a list just turns them into a pyke player.

My league phase was the worst phase of my life I’m so glad I got out of that hellscape
It's good you got out. The game is really addicting and not good for your mental
I really enjoy league it's fun and chill
Actually same, guess it also comes down to what your attitude towards the game is! @@kanjonojigoku8644
i'm not into league specifically but i'm into the game's genre, it makes for some good mental fortitude building (my actual addiction lies in genshin)
This sounds so sad, league has the power to bring together every non functional human
Something must be deeply wrong with me. I came into this thinking I was the target audience and came out of it wanting to play League
I’ve never played LoL in my life and don’t plan to but holy shit Arcane is a fucking masterpiece
17 minutes in THIS WAS JUST A BEGINNING? I'M ALREADY STRESSED
As a league player this video was very entertaining. Hearing a player who hasnt played the game for over 10 years describe it has a special charm
"Good men die, I choose to live" is a hard ass line
As a person who loves reading the wiki and got obsessed with Arcane, but hates MOBAs, this is the video for me lol
"Extremely powerful turrets"
1400 armor Rammus: Wouldn't say so
Not only is the video itself great, I absolutely love the part on Illaoi mentioning how her kit beutifully reflects her personality and belief. This is the first video of yours that I am watching, and I ALREADY LOVE YOUUUUUUUU ( in a normal way tho)
rowby you taught me to play the most frustraiting champions if i ever get forced to play league one day
Can assure you, multiple champs on-release were so much worse than anything you could possibly imagine
as an arcane fan who tried to get into league, the tutorial was so confusing in that it didn't explain what i was supposed to be doing at all that after 2 hours I gave up.
@RowbyVids That's true, I had forgotten you already made a video with that title tbh lol 😅

It's a meme.
Spent so much time on the game they feel like quitting would make that time wasted.
And probably the biggest reason: League has really high highs and really low lows. So you can love and chase the highs while still hating and dreading the lows.
I play league off and on. Still really like playing the game but sometimes I just need to take a break for a couple of months.
Got into it a few years back, i have never had a game so difficult to drop
So league is just competitive cookie clicker with cartoon heroes
9:00 i love how he says something and does the exact opposite (flash into the tower to finish him off)
youve earned yourself a new subscriber, this was single handedly the funniest and most relatable piece if league related content ive seen.
Explain this in overwatch terms
describing support as the role for being a hater is so real.
Im actually so happy rowby made a real league video never thought he would
12:52 Slight correction here, depending on the character your abilities can do ability power or attack damage. Your basic attack (auto-attack) does AD exclusively although funky items can make it do some AP too.
damn, this is what Jayce had to deal with?!
3:56 Me after finishing Arcane season 2: "Oh, so that's what was happening! Neat"
I have never watched Arcane. Only seen clips of it. I have no idea what's going on.
As a toplane main this game either is the most euphoric experience ever or literal hell on earth
I got suckered into this, thinking that it was like lore shit that happens after the events of Arcane. I’m gonna stick around though because he suffered for our entertainment.
My hypothesis is that League players don't say "Bottom" because they don't want to be the BUTT of a bunch of gay jokes from the other players.
7:19 bro got shot again and dies😂😂
30:48 I FOUND THE FNAF JOKE! but seriously, ive been a league player since 2019 and this video is excellent i wouldnt even mind more videos about league on ur channel Rowby, keep up the awesome work
22:50 "better not get Ekko killed" quite the opposite, actually

"And one of you is going to ruin the entire fucking match and it's a rat race to see who gets there first."
I felt that.
that netanyaho joke came out of left field
But God, do I f.kin agree
Been playing fairly actively since season 3, made my account and played a few games off and on since season 0. I think your explanation is perfect for anyone new to the game. Once you get to the point of have well over 5k hours, every ranked season since season 3 under your belt, and played every champ you lose the ability to really explain this game in a way that normal people would understand. At this point I could quit and have quit playing, but its been so common place in my life its impossible to leave it forever. Solid video and very funny!
at this point is it even feasible to start playing this as a video game noob?
I know of three different means to do so :
- have a friend teach you, probably the easiest way, but not required.
You know this sounds like something fun to have on a stream in the background. I don't have the attention span for this
I hate how i now know that this crap debuted the same day i did, day ruined
13 minutes into this video and i am already experiencing league-shellshock
You know if I could just figure out how the hell to make custom loadouts I’d probably be addicted to this game

I was kicked out of my bubble when one day I tried something I wasn't used to do and someone screamed LOL slang so loud at me I googled wtf were all those words, realized everyone loved to make the game somehow overly complicated AND with fixed strategy. It gave me such a headache I unistalled it and never looked back.
