- Hidden in the jungles near San José, Costa Rica is a canine paradise known locally as 'The Land Of The Strays.' After moving into the area and discovering the plight of the stray dog population, Lya Battle set out to buy a farm and fill it with all the local canines requiring salvation. Territorio de Zaguates is now a privately funded, volunteer-run haven for nearly 1000 strays who are given free reign of the jungle. It's not all love though, with locals jealous of her land breaking in and poisoning her dogs in a quest to intimidate her out of the area. Lya refuses to quit, merely strengthening her walls and continuing to take more dogs in every day. VICE goes on a walk with hundreds of strays and meets their owner to learn why she begun her mission to become the Costa Rican dog messiah.

When you have one dog and bring in another, it's territorial. This, this is a pack of dogs. This is how they roam in the wild, etc. I'm sure theres a fair few dog fights now and then, but they learn bite tolerance and etc when in such a population.

I'm sure they must work very hard to pickup after these dogs yet with so many where do they waste and how do they avoid not contaminating the Spring for those who maybe down stream of it? This is so my dad! 💛 He takes in all the local strays and hunting dogs who get lost out in the country. They love it out there roaming his 30 acres. At one point he had over 30 dogs. He just loves to love. When my step mom died about 15 years ago he started collecting strays. 🙏🏼💙God bless this lady and all who help her take care of all of them dogs.

I know that what you do is one of the most difficult things, taking care of all the unwanted or abandoned dogs. I have helped kids, teens, adults (who in the end usually take advantage of your kindness), but my heart is absolutely 100% for the dogs! I've been an independent rescue for years. Spent my own $$$$$ to feed, vet and care for them. My papa told me just before he passed, the dogs "son tu caridad" meaning "they are your charity work." I included this place in a report I did about choosing sanctuaries over euthanization & after watching The Land of the Strays, a short film about this place, I cried. It makes me so sad that people are going in & trying to harm these poor dogs when they’re doing nothing harmful to the people. Bless Lya Battle & her husband for taking care of them all.

I had the opportunity a few years ago to visit Territorio de Zaguates and it was honestly one of my favorite memories from Costa Rica to date. The landscape was incredible and I can see why people are jealous, but it is just unnerving that greedy and malicious people feel the need to harm innocent animals. It is unconscionable.

Why is allowing a species to breed uncontrollably to the point that it eventually becomes feral your idea of a good deed? The locals are trying to stop her from committing one of the greatest atrocities against nature by allowing these things to topple an ecosystem and you people blindly support her.
Are a couple domestic dog species worth more than the entire Costa Rican Biome? Is it fair to the native plants and animals to allow them to be hunted into extinction by these dogs? Is it fair to the locals to have packs of feral dogs attacking them and their families wherever they go?
This woman can't look after them forever and once their pack gets beyond a certain size and she can no longer afford to feed them they will turn on the ecosystem and the locals.
How do you think the feral cat epidemic in Australia started which threatens to drive every native species their into extinction? It was by fools like this attempting to do the same thing. STOP trying to play god and control nature.

These are stray dogs that are enclosed and are fed daily. Also you do realize a dog would not last at all in a Costa Rican jungle right? I live only about an hour from there, and even though this place has been on the news before, I hadn't heard on the dogs being poisoned. Poisoning a dog is such a heinous act that I am completely unable to express my hate for people who do that. Also, all water is the property of the state in Costa Rica, so you can't just do whatever you want with it, such evil for some land

Eh, shes not doing much in helping that population then. It's more or less a pool of infection if shes not doing anything about it and is only doing it to make her self feel better instead of bettering the lives of all the dogs in her area.
