I think im on my 10th kit and 3rd actual gunpla and im thinking of it (the other kits are dragonball figurerise standard) and I just finished the master grade unicorn ova so I wanna try the dry decals to make it look even better
Great info for beginners like me!! Clear and concise... and you don't let the production get in the way of the instruction. Gonna check out the rest of your tutorials!!! Thanks!!
Thank you very much for this,I've had a few kits with those dry decals and was turned off to using them.I'm building an MG Endless Waltz Tallgeese and I've passed on these decals with an MG and RG before.I don't want to keep wasting them.I cut out one and pressed it hard with my thumb tip and it worked🙌🔥🔥🔥
I think 1 reason why dry-transfer decals are better is because when properly applied, they go on without any borders. On the sticker decals, of course there's a noticeable border. But even with a water slide decals, there's a slight border.
When I was a kid in the 70s , we used to get these things in cereal that were like little scenes on a piece of card or heavy paper. The came with a sheet of dry transfers of say certain cartoon characters or something and you would apply them to the background so I learned how to apply them before I did the water slides. They can be fussy but when applied successfully, they can really make the kit.
I've built over 30 kits and I really don't have a problem with foil stickers as long as you do them right. I thought those ones were waterslides so good to know they're dry rubs.
Was building the MG 00 XN Raiser and had never messed with dry rub decals before. Highly informative video, and was a lot of fun applying them! Thank you so much!
Thanks for the vid, I've been building for a while but was scared of these decals, decided to finally give it a shot with my mg f91 kit And they look so clean
I had a kit that had some of these, but the instructions only translated them as "decals" , so I thought they were waterslides that had fused to the top sheet from humidity having the kit shipped to me. Requested a replacement set from BlueFin, was surprised to see the same issue. Ended up managing to peel the decals off the sheet and applied them , they look fine on my kit but lesson learned that there's another type of decal out there!
for real, I figured out it was a rub but wanted to know some tricks and this man didn't disappoint. my RX 78-2's shields lettering will be a bit off but it's livable. (and a have a different MG kit of RX 78-2)
Wow, thank you! I just got my first MG that came with Dry Transfer. This is so very informative I am likely to watch it again once I get to that part of the build.
I really do appreciate this video and did learn from it. I actually purchased a 3rd party Transformer and it came with the tiniest most delicate little decals I've ever seen. I tried to apply one and actually destroyed it just trying to pick it up like a regular sticker/decal. Thanks to this video I actually understand how they're supposed to work and I think I'll be able to apply the others successfully. Thanks
Thank you as I never even knew what they're called. I just keep getting them with my toys and I've tried to apply them, like a normal decal, and they always ripped. Thanks to you, I now know the proper way to apply these decals. I usually always use waterside though but, at least I now know how to apply these.
Omg I didn't know this exist until now thanks for the info! I want my decals to look like they are smooth or printed on to the surface so I think this kind of decal is for me.
Thx a bunch for making this video. I have several Gundams that came with these dry rub decals and I had no idea how to apply them, so that’s the reason why I didn’t like them. But after watching your video, it’s soooooo easy, especially the tape trick. Now I can go back to my other kits and apply them.
I’m brand new to gunpla, and I was THIS close to using these babies like waterslides cause I thought that’s what they were. Thank god I did some searching first. Thanks for the vid!
Most of my kits have all been real grades which come with the sticker types so I’m just starting to play with the dry rubs…I immediately used this tip with the dry rubs for my PG red frame and it was so easy!! Thank you so very much!
I had no idea it was actually that simple. This helped a lot, thank you! Now I just have to dig up all the dry transfer sheets I put away because I had no idea how to put them on...
You’re right about the tape lol I was messing with it and didn’t bother looking up a tutorial not sure why but I learned that the tape really helped lol 10/10
Here's the reason I don't like Dry Rubs. Depending on the surface that you're attempting to apply the sticker to, it can become difficult to get proper alignment, let alone ensure taped in such a way that doesn't have the sticker move (this has happened several times on my ver. Ka Sinanju and this destroyed the decal; hence I bought water slide replacements in an attempt to correct this). Sometimes you have to press down on top of the decal because there is literally no other surface to apply pressure to when trying to tape, again causing problems where the decal is ruined. I've also had it where sometimes in order to apply one decal, I have to apply tape over the surface where another decal has been placed and that causes issues that basically destroy the decal. I agree that the Dry Rubs, when applied and applied correctly look great; however there are scenarios where doing water slides are just easier and going to save you a lot of frustration (that's not say the Water Slides don't have their own problems).
After applying them, do you spray a gloss coat or flat finish to them? If so, how do they react to it? Do they silver, crack, peel, come off or discolor? Thank you.
great question, in my experience its best to do it in this order clear coat, decal, clear coat, matte coat(optional) you should have no cracking, discoloration or otherwise
Came here with literly 0% knowledge about decals, other than the word itself, was looking for a quick conclusive video review, and this hits the spot. Im a restorator in israel, looking for tips and tricks on which is the best way to restor those decals and letters on old electric appliances, flip clock radio, phonographs, tv Sets and more. Great video! Ide ive some tips whice decal will suit me better?
Wondering if you have any tips for applying dry rub decals to an angled or curved surface? It seems like the plastic sheet is rather stiff sometimes and doesn't want to bend easily on an angled surface. Any advice would be nice. Thanks and great vid.
ahh yes i can see how this would be significantly harder. unfortunately i cant remember a time where iv had to do a dry run on a rounded surface. can i ask what your applying and on what kit?
@@GunplaUniversity Its decals for the Rx-78-2 Ver.Ka. It seems like most of the decals would be easy but there is one big one on the shield that goes over the beveled edges on the shield. Messed it up once and I only have one more decal to replace it. So I don't want to mess it up. Lol
@@Derwafflebakker hmmmm if its a more of a flat edge like im thinkning it is with the rx78 shield i would still use the tape method and apply one part and then without pulling up the decal kinda "see-saw" the other side down and then apply that side.
Do we need to use Micro Sol and Micro Sets to help them adhere more or are they more for water decals? I've always used water decals but I cant find decent water decal for my MG red astray so I'm going to attempt the dry transfer decals.
Yes those are for your water decals and not needed for these. Just pure pressure is needed here. Check out DelpiDecal for some waterslides, im willing to bet they will have what you need and they work great. www.delpidecal.com/product/search.html?banner_action=&keyword=red+astray
great question my friend. water slides normally come on a light blue or blue background. dry transfers come on a transparent sheet with a "baking sheet' type paper behind it. Dry dry transfers are pretty rare though now a days with modern kits. shame really. you may still run into them with older kits.
I have old version of f91 master grade sir, is it dry transfer decals or water slide, I want to put the stickers sir but I'm afraid I don't what is that,
I've been dodging these details for a few years. Now that I'm back into gunpla I have tackle the dry transfers soon once I tackle the F91 MG 2.0 since I assume the big F91 decals are a dry transfer.
I thought it's a waterslide decal so I put it into water.. 1 minute passed and it still won't slide, I thought I do it wrong so I stop. A week later I decide to ask my friend and he told me it's a dry decal 💀
When i 1st had decals Dry ones I though you just rub em hard and they will stick Yes they did stick but the decal named rx - 0 is ruined became a normal rx lmao

Thanks 🙏🏾!!! Glad this tip helped you
That feel when you've built 30 models, and yet you're only now deciding to learn how to use Dry Decals
lol your not much different from myself. i had completed many kits before i started expanding down this road.
I did 40 then I got my first Master Grade
