  • In the video above, the instructor is conducting a multiple stimulus without replacement (MSWO) preference assessment with toys. MSWOs allow you to determine a child’s preference hierarchy from a select group of items. Sometimes (but not always), a child’s highest-preferred items can be used to reinforce his or her appropriate behaviors. MSWOs are most appropriate for children who will consistently scan a large array of items and make a consistent choice based on relative preference. An MSWO should not be used if a child is likely to engage in problem behavior when toys are removed. Typically, preference assessments with toys and with edibles are conducted separately.

There were times where the child clearly didn't want any of the items, so the data was skewed

wait a minute, why did she say "choose one" at 3:24 when there was only 1 thing left. lol how is that a choice?? Then she said "you picked maracas!"... um... as if the kid had any other choice lol and she said maracas when there was only one maraca. I'm crying tears of laughter right now.

Did anyone else think there was a positional preference? It seemed like the child was prone to picking from the end position (closest to camera).

I like this video and have a couple questions. Do you believe the dinosaur was selected due to the therapist' gesture toward the toy. Also is the camera a distraction for the child? I would like to know bc I plan to use audio-visual and wondered about the limitations that come from not hiding the camera(less visible).

Yes she did it twice with the gestures and eye contact with objects.

Yes, she placed the hand on the dinosaur, child picked dinosaur. There are a lot of mistakes here. This video has so much it could be used as a what not to do video

Me neither. I did not like some of the therapist behaviors. However I am thinking that the video is old and maybe it was from the time ABA was still working towards a more human treatment of the client. And I am studying towards obtaining my BCBA

@@grumpyinbrooklyn6347 I know your comment is from three years ago, but I agree that ABA still needs to work towards more human treatment of a individual. One thing I don't like about ABA is the emphasis of masking or forcing an individual to like more age-appropriate things, especially when their interests don't harm anyone. For example, if an eight-year-old with ASD still likes to watch or listen to Cocomelon, I don't see the harm in them watching or listening to Cocomelon or similar types of songs or videos. Similarly, if a 12-year-old with ASD, intellectual disability, etc. likes to watch shows like Rosie's Rules or Work it out Wombats, I don't see any harm, and I don't feel they should be forced to watch more age-appropriate things especially if they are gaining something from the program. Overall, I don't care much for ABA, but it does have its place when it is used to teach a person to stop behaviors that could harm or injure themselves or others.
