The Campania and Emerald witch are my two favourite arcs. The latter especially since all members of the ”family” are in it. I will get back to it when we get there. The Campania arc is just really enjoyable to read/watch. It has character development and more backstory to add and of course great action. Analyzing character’s become more and more interesting the farther we go in the story. The foreshadowing you mentioned is a big part in this. It makes rereading interesting. Being one of my favourite arcs, I was really waiting for you to tackle this one and was definitely not disapointed

Given the fact that those bizarre dolls also need blood in order to function you could say that all the bizarre dolls are basically vampires. Especially if you think about how vampires are said to never age (because they are already dead and can´t age) Just an interesting little fact to consider

I think they both have mixed feelings towards each other: for example, Sebastian says later in the manga he's not interesting in killing or devouring souls - not even Ciel's for the moment - but just to play this game with him. Play the Butler? Shenanigans? I think Sebastian is manipulating him but also Ciel is very smart, and I wouldn't deny Sebastian's capability to have human emotions. We'll see - Undertaker IS the main antagonist in my opinion. But NOT of Ciel, of the Black Butler. He doesn't really endanger ciel because he knows that Sebastian will protect Ciel. I think OurCiel, though he makes some mistakes due to his trauma and sense of entitlement, is indeed kind and mostly good, and is only brooding and cold to protect the people he loves - he doesn't even admit to himself that he cares sometimes, but his actions are telling - Lizzie is such an amazing character. I hope she won't die young and will find a way to be happy, even without Ciel (thought I doubt it). Also I love the Midfords, and Edward is an underrated character - I think RealCiel might have been a bit biased when he was alive, but OurCiel is not. Anyway the twins are both very smart, even under pressure, so it'll be really exciting to see them fight. I loved the flashbacks and the movie but this was basically a retelling and I preferred Weston Arc, it was more original. Can't wait for the next one, I'm really excited about it! I definitely remember feeling more underwhelmed at the Undertaker reveal for that exact reason you mentioned of how the anime treated the reveal. I definitely do believe Yana gave the production staff notes on all the major story beats she wanted to go in, so it's a really good catch to see the parallel with how the queen is being set up now versus S1. AAAAAA I love the in-between breather chapters so much. It's the one thing that makes me ultimately prefer the story-telling of the manga over the Book of adaptations, because while the latter is pretty faithful, Yana simply has more control over how information is communicated in a purposeful way and the breather chapters which are really important to making you care about the side characters get completely dropped (for understandable reasons).
I wish they did animate the breather chapters, they'd make for some really fun one off episodes! I think the Easter chapter would also make a really good reintroduction to Black Butler for the new season of the anime, but it is sillier in tone than the anime likes to take for the first episodes.

It's not over yet! I'm planning on covering the whole manga, but I'm going arc by arc to make it more digestible while still being thorough. Honestly, not a whole lot has happened since the twin reveal. We've mostly been seeing flash backs, and getting back to the main plot at hand, figuring out what's going on with the blood transfusions for the bizarre dolls.
Definitely not haha. It will still be going for quite a long time. Partially because of the slow pace and partially because this arc doesn't feel like the last to me, more like one step before the last

Also, you have managed to make the situation on the Campania feel really terrifying (good choice of music, Myuu is a legend!), which I have not felt while watching the anime or reading the manga. Black Butler could have been an AMAZING horror universe. Also, also, thank you for making this arc interesting for me! I read it after I watched the OVA, and I was really underwhelmed by it for the first couple of times. I have only just come to liking it somewhat. I am looking forward to watching your public school arc video! This is my least favorite arc of the whole manga, so, I am looking forward to changing my mind about it like I did with the Atlantic. P.S.: Isn't it devastating how literally noone (if I remember correctly) gave a second thought about who of the twins would survive or at least ponder for a moment who is standing before them? Maybe it was annouced beforehand that Ciel is the sole surviver, but I don't remember. If that was an automatic assumption by everyone, that would surely not make wonders for OURCiel's mental state.

It's cool that Elizabeth is skilled with swords and all but her monologue annoyed me a bit because she sounded like a "not like other girls" girl and self-absorbed. I think most little girls do go through internalized misogyny at some point in their life and she did get advice from Madam Red. Madam Red was very misogynistic and it stemmed from jealousy. It also showed us that she is individualistic and confident about her talent but still very insecure about herself.
But she isn't a "not like other girls" girl, she just wanted to be seen as desirable to Ciel. Because of a miscommunication, she thought she wouldn't be loved by him if she showed her stronger side.
Actually, if anything, she *wanted* to be like other girls. I distinctly remember in Lizze's flashback her deliberately choosing shorter heels that would likely seem childish for her age in constrast to the longer, more mature heels that other girls her age were wearing because she didn't want her being taller than Ciel to undermine (is that the right word??) him. She looks forlornly at the other girls before bringing back her cheer to not worry Ciel. It's one of the many things she felt she had to sacrifice to support Ciel because she just loves him that much.

Thank you for all of your comments and information!!! I probably am confusing the attitudes of 20th century America with 19th century Britain. Most of the historical media I have seen had been made with the 20th century lens, and given Lizzy's back story, I'm inclined to believe Yana Toboso had a similar though process when creating the Black Butler universe.

the best stories (by that I mostyl mean best mysteries) to me are written either on train, on cruise ship or somewhwere in haunted mansion or castle. Maybe thats why this is still my favourite arc in manga (with big comeption with Murder arc ofc)
That's so fair! Stories set on trains or ships are usually pretty fast paced, and that creates a lot of fun chaos for the characters!

I do think the black butler campaign arc was good since I saw the film a few years later after the film came out and I did found the arc interesting especially with it came to undertaker being revealed as a shiningami/ reaper and has such a curiosity about Sebastian questioning why a demon would play a role of a butler for human child then playing more a big role in the western college arc being designed as the principal trying to make more bizarre dolls then later that gets involved with our ciel into his big revealed in the blue cult arc and probably also in the arc that happened right know in the manga and that might lead to undertaker to fight Sebastian again which might have the rest of the shinigami/ reaper involved as well and might resolve into some kind of conflict with undertaker might mention to Sebastian about why is he still contracted to our ciel event though he is not the real ciel and doesn’t have the title of the phantomhive earl want Sebastian to break the contract with our ciel for the real ciel but he wouldn’t since I’m pretty sure the bizarre doll doesn’t have souls since their just waking dead stitch up corpse

Also I just noticed but what makes the case with lizzy so sad is that it was probably just a sentence from ciel with no real thought behind it. He was just 7 after all and kids sometimes say stupid stuff so he likely doesn't even have that view anymore but lizzy overthought that little comment and developed that internallized misogyny. So I don't really think that r!ciel still carries around that view because we all have said things we don't mean later on
That's so fair! I don't think it was JUST Ciel's comment that contributed to her internalized misogyny, but it was a factor. And one she focused. I don't think r!Ciel meant anything too serious by it, he probably just didn't like when Francis lectured him, because he's a kid.

I love the theory!! I'm a believer of it, but I do have to admit there's not enough evidence for it to make me treat it as full canon. But it's a fun outlook to have when reading Undertaker and o!Ciel interactions.
The thing you say about the Bizarre Dolls' eyes being covered reminds me of a common phrase:
"Eyes are the window to the soul."
Bizarre Dolls do not have souls. Therefore, they don't have visible eyes. (Although that changes in the later arc but whateves)

Some spare thoughts:
- So, disclaimer: I'll never ship Ciel and Lizzy, they're cousins and they'd function much better on a sibling dynamics, BUT I think Yana's intent from this Arc on is to point out their similarities, show Ciel has romantic feelings for Lizzie and maybe she might too after SPOILER the Ciel Bizarre Doll situation is solved
- totally agree with Ciel's mixed feelings for Sebastian, BUT I'll say this: I think also Ciel's good feelings for Sebastian - his concern, friendly bantering, treatment as part of the family - are authentic, not just the disdain, horror and disgust. I think they both have mixed feelings towards each other: for example, Sebastian says later in the manga he's not interesting in killing or devouring souls - not even Ciel's for the moment - but just to play this game with him. Play the Butler? Shenanigans? I think Sebastian is manipulating him but also Ciel is very smart, and I wouldn't deny Sebastian's capability to have human emotions. We'll see
- Undertaker IS the main antagonist in my opinion. But NOT of Ciel, of the Black Butler. He doesn't really endanger ciel because he knows that Sebastian will protect Ciel. He's interested in the dynamics of the contract and in their relationship because I think he ultimately wants to BREAK it.
I also think Undertaker could be Vincent's father as he later weeps on his photo, or maybe - that would be intriguing - his lover. Maybe he loved several members of the Phantomhive family through generations.
Maybe his knowledge of souls and reapers will prove useful to trick or defeat Sebastian and save Ciel's soul - and life - from him. I definitely hope so.
- Ryan Stoker (a reference to Bram Stoker) is probably Undertaker's servant, Polaris, and yes, he's a Bizarre Doll
- I find it very odd that even Sebastian's memories are basically Ciel's PoV and backstory. I'd die to know what HE really thinks of Ciel, the abusers, the Queen, the whole situation etc., maybe we'll have some demon introspection near the end
- the twin thing is pretty obvious, but when I read the manga I was already aware of the theory so it maybe doesn't count.
I think OurCiel, though he makes some mistakes due to his trauma and sense of entitlement, is indeed kind and mostly good, and is only brooding and cold to protect the people he loves - he doesn't even admit to himself that he cares sometimes, but his actions are telling
- Lizzie is such an amazing character. I hope she won't die young and will find a way to be happy, even without Ciel (thought I doubt it). Also I love the Midfords, and Edward is an underrated character
- I think RealCiel might have been a bit biased when he was alive, but OurCiel is not. Anyway the twins are both very smart, even under pressure, so it'll be really exciting to see them fight.
I loved the flashbacks and the movie but this was basically a retelling and I preferred Weston Arc, it was more original. Can't wait for the next one, I'm really excited about it! Your videos are so good I always look forward to them and the thought helps me a lot when I'm stressed out and exhausted.

I think Lizzy is Ciel's only reminder of childhood innocence, which is why Ciel wants to protect her. Like he sees his former self in her.

I definitely remember feeling more underwhelmed at the Undertaker reveal for that exact reason you mentioned of how the anime treated the reveal. I definitely do believe Yana gave the production staff notes on all the major story beats she wanted to go in, so it's a really good catch to see the parallel with how the queen is being set up now versus S1.
AAAAAA I love the in-between breather chapters so much. It's the one thing that makes me ultimately prefer the story-telling of the manga over the Book of adaptations, because while the latter is pretty faithful, Yana simply has more control over how information is communicated in a purposeful way and the breather chapters which are really important to making you care about the side characters get completely dropped (for understandable reasons).
I wish they did animate the breather chapters, they'd make for some really fun one off episodes! I think the Easter chapter would also make a really good reintroduction to Black Butler for the new season of the anime, but it is sillier in tone than the anime likes to take for the first episodes.
@PocketCon there's a part of me that feels like they will animate this one to be honest. It's arguably the most important one, and the scene shown in the first trailer of Ciel and Sebastian reading the letter appears to be at night, so it could be at the end of the first episode after the Easter stuff?

This is my fave arc! I like how you mentioned Ciel was surrounded by strong women and learned to respect them, look up to them even! I love that! It was the same thought I had after watching Lizzy protect Ciel with her badass sword fighting!

If it is not obvious by now- I am watching these backwards- 😂I only know the anime part of this arc, I have yet to reach the manga portion because I am only just finishing up the Circus Arc, so it's interesting to hear the little details and such that supposedly happen. I actually never would've picked up on Lizzy's suspicions- and from what I hear about the Blue Revenge Arc, I'm kind of upset with her reaction- even if it's kind of justified. I just really hope she comes to realize our Ciel cares deeply about her, and I think that might come to happen if she spends more time with the real Ciel-

Is the Black Butler manga over? Last time I heard of it, the twin thing happened and I've heard nothing since. I'd love a vid about what is happening and the lore up to thar point cus this manga can be so confusing lol
It's not over yet! I'm planning on covering the whole manga, but I'm going arc by arc to make it more digestible while still being thorough. Honestly, not a whole lot has happened since the twin reveal. We've mostly been seeing flash backs, and getting back to the main plot at hand, figuring out what's going on with the blood transfusions for the bizarre dolls.

I don’t know of anyone in my life who has heard of black butler so these videos and comment sections are so refreshing, it feels like one giant book club and I really love it, I’ve been rereading the series along with the videos and the community is so engaged it’s just great! Can’t wait for part 7 especially given the imminent anime adaptation

I am VERY late to the party (I had a lot of work and had no time to catch up with any in-depth videos on any topics what so ever), but I just wanted to say thank you for continuing the series despite your attention now being split between Baldur's Gate and Black Butler.
Also, you have managed to make the situation on the Campania feel really terrifying (good choice of music, Myuu is a legend!), which I have not felt while watching the anime or reading the manga. Black Butler could have been an AMAZING horror universe.
Also, also, thank you for making this arc interesting for me! I read it after I watched the OVA, and I was really underwhelmed by it for the first couple of times. I have only just come to liking it somewhat.
I am looking forward to watching your public school arc video! This is my least favorite arc of the whole manga, so, I am looking forward to changing my mind about it like I did with the Atlantic.
P.S.: Isn't it devastating how literally noone (if I remember correctly) gave a second thought about who of the twins would survive or at least ponder for a moment who is standing before them? Maybe it was annouced beforehand that Ciel is the sole surviver, but I don't remember. If that was an automatic assumption by everyone, that would surely not make wonders for OURCiel's mental state.
I do think that his family may have had their suspicions, but didn't feel comfortable bringing it up since regardless of what twin was really there, that child had been through a lot already. But that's just a thought I have with zero supporting evidence.

I still think undertaker is the main antagonist here, and using the queen situation to his "experiment" . For what i think is to save our ciel presumably breaking the contract and maybe there's more revenge to it, So yea undertaker vs sebastian

1:45:35 I probably have to disagree with that because in the flasback arc where vincent talks to francis they actually speak about this topic. Francis says that vincent should teach o!ciel as well since if anything happens to the real ciel the title would go to him. Vincent to that "jokingly" says that should a day like this ever happen the title will go back to the queen (which is another indicator of why o!ciel chose to impersonate his brother since he overheard that). So I think that they actually didn't know because even if he had come back normally the title likely wouldn't have passed on to him

No, Vincent was already teaching him everything what a earl does. Francis was worried that being a earl would be hard on our Ciel since he's sickly. Vincent then got annoyed with her and said that joke to get her to shut up lol Vincent disagreed with her and didn't like her telling him what to do with his own kids. He definitely didn't like Francis underestimating his child.
Our Ciel proved his aunt wrong and proved his father right. His father must be very proud of him.

It's cool that Elizabeth is skilled with swords and all but her monologue annoyed me a bit because she sounded like a "not like other girls" girl and self-absorbed. I think most little girls do go through internalized misogyny at some point in their life and she did get advice from Madam Red. Madam Red was very misogynistic and it stemmed from jealousy. It also showed us that she is individualistic and confident about her talent but still very insecure about herself.
But she isn't a "not like other girls" girl, she just wanted to be seen as desirable to Ciel.
Because of a miscommunication, she thought she wouldn't be loved by him if she showed her stronger side.
Actually, if anything, she *wanted* to be like other girls. I distinctly remember in Lizze's flashback her deliberately choosing shorter heels that would likely seem childish for her age in constrast to the longer, more mature heels that other girls her age were wearing because she didn't want her being taller than Ciel to undermine (is that the right word??) him. She looks forlornly at the other girls before bringing back her cheer to not worry Ciel.
It's one of the many things she felt she had to sacrifice to support Ciel because she just loves him that much.
