i heard of this one a while ago, in one of those banned lists like you did, but i never dove into it until a few months ago. i understand why people find it disturbing and banned it, but reducing it to just that does a disservice to the anime. it is a heartbreaking story with roots in reality, and although its not for the faint of heart, that doesnt mean it doesnt deserve to be told
Your makeup in this video is FANTASTIC, 10/10! This is such an interesting analysis, made me feel like I was back in my art analysis classes in college but Actually Interesting and not just frustrating this time, lol
For once youtube recommended me something cool. I've had the English editon of the manga from the 90s for years it's cool to see a non clickbaity video about it's history.
What's cooler is actually the translators. The translation is credited to Laura Lindgren and Yoko Umezawa. Laura Lindgren is one of the founders of Blast Books the publisher, and Yoko Umezawa was the translator for the original English release of Akira by Marvel comics.
Thank you for sharing this. But, maybe the Soundtrack of Midori its not lost at all. Because, Kiryukan (Hiroshi Harada"s Production house) uploaded between 2021 and 2022 a couple of videos of Shojo Tsubaki's 1992 firts screening as a documentary. In some parts the BGM can be heard. By other side, Kiryukan uploaded a semi-accapella version of Maigo no Ribbon theme. Which the voice of Minako Naka (the singer and Midori's seiyuu) its so clean and its in Stereo audio. Probably Hiroshi Harada have the OST of Shojo Tsubaki, but can not be published because of Japanese copyright laws and because the composer was J.A Seazer. I wish one day the Soundtrack can be released. Because its so good, with that Synth-pop, New Wave, Darkwave vibe.
Everyone: Shoujo Tsubaki is the most extreme anime ever like holy fuck Me: (Has seen it twice, seen the animator's other films, own the manga it's based on including others by the same author, sweating in a corner and wondering if I'm insane)
Suggestion: Make chapters for this video! It not only helps the viewer go through the video but UA-cam/Google's algorithm likes it. Amazing video, I'm so glad someone made this!
UA-cam's recommendations are getting awesome lately. I thought i was watching a channel with hundreds of thousands of views, to be honest. There's some slight audio glitches i think. Otherwise, your content has really good quality!
I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT ABOUT ELFEN LIED AS AN EXAMPLE! But yeah that's fair. I've not actually watched Elfen Lied (only a 2 hour video essay about it afasdfasf) but I know Devilman is good! Having a good story with compelling characters makes it a lot easier to push through the eroguro stuff if that's not your thing.
I think Hiroshi Harada thought depicting seriously horrific and repulsive acts and disturbing imagery would be a way to evoke how truly awful bullying and abuse really are. That could make more people conscious of that, perhaps the bullies themselves.
I know that there is a live action of Shojo Tsubaki, I am hoping it's toned down to not as graphic, questionable and morbid as it's anime and manga progenitors.
My lord. What a first impression! I love everything about this makeup, and the bright colors behind only made it better. Certainly wasn’t expecting a rainbow clown, but it looks nice.
So according to UA-cam I watched a video by Youreverydaytheorist on this anime. They did talk about the story itself. However they didn't talk about any of the stuff you did, at least I don't recall so and I'm not going to watch it again to find out. So good on you for being more interesting and educational. And it's funny you should say you don't want to watch the live action version as it's easier to deal with things that are drawn, when quite often I find I respond deeper to animation than live action.
I like the manga/anime; I read it a few years ago after watching an Iceberg video about strange/forbidden movies.I looked it up, and I saw one art piece of Mummy Man and Midori, and damn, ngl, Mummy is hot. I'm into stuff like this, so of course, that's exactly my thing. I watched the movie today before watching this video. And I ordered the Live Action one, because I want to see it, too. While I do prefer body horror stuff drawn/animated, I am curious about the LA Movie. Mad respect to Hiroshi Harada for making the entire animated film by himself.
@Pocket Leaves A little off topic, but I believe the genre has potential to explore deeper and even philosophical themes with gore like Silent Hill 2 . I believe it would be a perfect way to explore gender dysphoria and the pain / discomfort that comes from it. Body Horror art and Gore art really connect to me on a personal level for that reason. Being that I'm transgender myself. I'm a transgender man ftm with alot of gender dysphoria. Gore art is a way to vent those unpleasant feelings I feel on paper. It's cathartic. While I'm uncomfortable with the premise of this Manga. I absolutely adore the artstyle for this Anime and Manga series . I love Manga and Anime that delve into the experimental or even disturbing things in a artistic way that's meaningful. Something like the Manga of Beserk for example, has a beautiful ,deep and thought provoking story despite the horrific things the characters go through in the series. Ashita No Joe is another series with bleakness and tragedy that comes from boxing . Both are amazing Manga series which I recommend.
Yes! I LOVE explorations of gender dysphoria as gore/body horror. Body horror in general can be used to convey so many things in a cathartic way, and I really connect with that genre of horror for that reason.
Battle Royal is classified as a Splatterpunk book! And I know that particular work is also sometimes classified as eroguro, so I'd say there's a decent overlap there!
Having read this manga, other ero guro works, and a number of different Western splatterpunk/extreme horror authors, there's definitely a lot of overlap. Battle Royale and Aron Beauregard's Playground have similar vibes for starters @@PocketLeaves
Not talking about you specifically video creator but it’s very frustrating to see people engage with something they clearly won’t vibe with then throw a fit over the art not resonating with it.
Yeah I get that. I think there's a difference though with people giving something a shot just to see what it's about, and then talking about what they didn't mesh with versus people unfairly tearing something down just because they didn't personally like it. But at a certain point, you just gotta wonder, what on earth did some people expect? (I know it's a totally different situation, but I felt the same way with people getting into Animal Crossing in 2020, and being surprised and unhappy about how directionless the game play can be because the things they hated are core aspects of the game franchise. Like what did you expect?)
@Pocket Leaves The history behind this series is definitely interesting. I've seen my fair share of dark Anime and Manga with various dark themes and messages like Texhnolyze, Now and Then, Here and There , Rainbow Nisha Rokubou No Shinchin, to name a few . Which I love all those Anime I mentioned btw. But due to the subject subject matter of this Anime /Manga series in particular, I'm not comfortable necessarily viewing this series depite loving the artwork for it . I like dark Anime and Manga series . I usually gravitate towards those kinds of series. So I'm rather conflicted. Would you recommend it? Do you think this series is good in anyway ?
Ah, speaking from a story telling standpoint, it's nothing special. I mean, it's fine, but it's not worth making yourself upset/uncomfortable if you already know that watching the events unfold will be distressing for you.
Stuff like Cannibal Holocaust and A Serbian Film are far more graphic, and they're in live action (and in CH's case, involved actual animal deaths), so the controversy behind this anime seems rather silly. Also, I wasn't expecting a cute clown girl to talk about something other than actual clownery, but I'm not complaining.
I remember watching this Midori anime matter fact the whole 40 minute movie is on UA-cam still however they put a warning screen on certain scenes. But the author does have a way to try and let the viewers know that humans are not so innocent. I also heard that there was an extra 15-20 missing footage that got destroyed which possibly was political. Either way it was trash I wouldn’t watch it again if you never seen it don’t waste your time.
i am always shocked by the things of the gore and eroticism can be entertaining or eye opening when merged together. Favorite of this type is og clive barker
@@PocketLeaves I’m very passionate about it . Maybe one day I’ll make an entire vid going over the IPs history. It’s like you said I really can’t find any credible Japanese source saying it failed In Japan and most Japanese friends I talked too seem to agree with me on it. That’s it’s really bizzare that it happened and not that funny in retrospect.
That's fair! I've only ever heard about it on videos about messed up animes, although I think Midori has stirred up some discussion on twitter and tiktok recently, but essentially in the same way it's talked about on youtube (focusing on the banned myth and talking about how gross they find the work)
When it comes to stuff like guro im pretty split on how I feel about it 😒. On one hand, I find it disgusting and vile. Yet on the other hand I listen to old school Tyler the Creator.
I mean, it's totally fair to have a case by case basis, and hearing about or reading something hits a lot differently than actually seeing depictions guro.
I've found some guro creators on recommendations or even in museums that made me rethink my initial dislike for the genre, because their work was that good. The same thing happened with extreme horror, where most of the movies I saw I didn't like but happened to watch some on recommendation that I found incredible. I generally would say I don't like country music, yet some of my favorite musicians have turned out to be country musicians. Lol.
Look unlike you and other youtubers here I don't have and never ever had an interest at all in the Gore Genre, it's just too frightening, horrible and off putting for me and I don't it entertaining at all and these are all big reasons why I despise and loose interest overtime in Berserk, Attack On Titan, Demon Slayer and Vinland Saga etc.. Hence why I only watched 2 seasons of AOT on crunchyroll and then skipped straight to the final episode of the 4th season and the final OVA/specials of AOT. I'm Good with there being 2 Black Swordsmen here them both being Kirito and Guts. They're both named the black swordsman after their black clothing. In Guts' case it's his Black Scales and in Kirito's case it's his Black Coats, Black Hair, Black shoes, trousers and shirts.
I am very sensitive to horror and the other topics this anime is about, but at the same time I saw a thumbnail for it and am pretty curious about it. Thanks for making this video! Now I can learn about it without actually seeing any disturbing content. (I have definitely scared myself before because I was curious about a story that turned out to be pretty dark. 😓🫠)
haven’t finished the video yet (loving it so far!) but i thought i’d add: the “guro” in “eroguro nansensu” actually means “grotesque”, not “gore”
Oh good catch!!! That makes a lot more sense. I must have written it down wrong. Thank you!

Honestly I love this anime. In my eyes it is a beautiful artistic portrayal of certain traumatic events.
I never knew it was shown in person with like interactive things that’s kinda cool
right? I just recently learned about that too, and it's so cool! I'd love to go to something like that

I know that there is a live action of Shojo Tsubaki, I am hoping it's toned down to not as graphic, questionable and morbid as it's anime and manga progenitors.
From what I can gather, it's... sort of toned down? The main character gets aged up from 12 to 14, for example. (The actress who plays her was 18)
I mean, the film is rated as R15+ so it is gonna be toned down
Especially the infamous dog scene, you don’t even get to see the corpse
