The no 14 first stop was near me in Hornsey Rise. Some days when I had nothing to do I would pay my 2p and do the whole journey to Putney. Sometimes their would be an old RT. So I'm talking around 1976.
Great Video. I was barely just alive when this was filmed, however I've moved to the area 2 years ago. It's interesting too see how some aspects have never changed, and the comparison between the old(ish!) and the current day. I definitely prefer the allocation that included plenty of Routemasters, Dennis Darts, Wright Gemini 1's, Transbus ALX400's & Plaxton Presidents. Would you happen to know if the Routemasters happened to do the 430 before their withdrawal?
The routemasters would have been on the 30 and 74 buses when they were the Roehampton bus. The 430 never got them. Unless it was an extremely rare allocation.
I used to drive the Routemasters out of Putney Garage in the 1970s and 1980s on routes 14, 22, 30 37 and 85. This film made me SO nostalgic. Is there any way of getting hold of a copy at all? Just for my own personal use.
Jim Stevens Hello Jim. I've been trying to write to you privately for a couple of days but Google keep changing the goalposts for messaging. If you are able, via your UA-cam, can you let me have an e-mail address to which I can write to you privately. I am currently transferring my original digital tapes to DVD so if you would like an original quality copy of the RM video, it will be an easy project. Speak soon, Alan
Hi Jim, I was a Conductor No 124047 Out of Chelverton Road. The 14´s were my usual route together with my Driver Alan Gayle No 89869. If I / we got over time it was never together and I remember doing the 74 one and only time on a Saturday Afternoon / Evening with a veteran of the route, When we got to the Zoo he said to me in quite plain terms "WE DON´T NEED TO STOP AT ALL COMPULSORY STOPS...RING ME THROUGH !!!" My answer of course was "Sorry" this is not my normal destination... Lo & Behold about 3 Years later this same guy was with Me on an early Shift No 2 on the 14´s (The first Bus to Hornsey Rise), We got to Holloway and he Stopped, came to the rear and asked me "I´m Sorry, Which Way Do We Go ?... Okay, it had been more than 5 years since he´d been that way. But ...I Didn´t have the heart or the balls to say what I wanted to Say. True Story.
I remember working in Putney in 1983 it was great to see these buses then.
