I remember when this first aired and the next day talking about it on the way to school. I wasn't really into Red Dwarf at that point but the ending to season 6 was totally unexpected. Couldn't believe how one minute the episode was all laughs and jokes then suddenly it became this high concept nail biting drama! Truly epic!
This is by my far my favourite Rimmer Moment. I get a sense of pride just watching it. The one time you really see the side of Rimmer that becomes Ace Rimmer. It shows that when truly backed into a corner, when truly facing certain death with no way out. He will choose the heroic option. What a guy.
Yes. Despite everything, despite everything he ever said that was callous and cold and wrong, in that one moment he chose the righteous path. It's glorious, sitcom or not.
1:44 This is incredibly shallow, but, HOLY MOTHER, CHRIS'S BACKSIDE IN THOSE TROUSERS. He might not have liked that particular Rimmer costume, but everybody else did.
There is another episode where Rimmer does prove that Ace is inside of him - in Holoship, where Rimmer could have taken the position of Commander Crane to be given a position on the ship with a hard light body, sex with women, a real chance at some kind of life... but instead, he gave up the position to give her back her life since she gave up hers to give him the position. It's little things like this scene and Holoship that prove that really, Ace really IS Rimmer and is inside of him... sometimes.
@@hitokage4 One of my favourite scenes in the show is the Ace graveyard of capsules forming a ring around the planet showing that they all had the potential to be heroes even the weakest most cowardly ones. We are all Rimmers and we can all be Aces.
Interesting factoid: apparently this episode, at least in part, was actually written AS it was filmed, like they were writing directly into the autocue.
i always remember this one scene where rimmer becomes heroic. this whole season was such a great character arc and i remember feeling disappointed in season 8 where we didn't see that continue. it would of been great to see more of that kind of awkward ace rimmer.
I liked the original ending they had planned, where Rimmer destroys the Timedrive and undoes all that their future selves does. The crew then celebrate, with Rimmer being uncharacteristically humble, they've re-found Red Dwarf's vapor trail and are on their way. This would've also been an excellent lead up to the episode where Rimmer takes over for Ace, becoming what he was inevitably meant to be.
IMHO the comedies i've seen that give us a good laugh along with some good added drama are Only Fools and Horses, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Red Dwarf. I know it sounds biased (and i'm not saying other comedy shows haven't done it), but these three have managed to do it like a u-turn, where its all funny at first and seconds later it starts getting more serious. But this ending to Red Dwarf would've been one of those limbo conclusions where your thinking did they make it out or not.
The people's ending to Red Dwarf. Just like how Only Fools And Horses truly ended when they became millionaires. I'd rather have a story which ends abruptly in its prime, without resolving the plot, than one which carries on to the point where I don't care any more.
This scene reminds me of when me and the boys were playing warzone in what seemed like an impossible situation against a team that had the high ground and better weapons and we took a vote and then we all agreed to just fight them head on and I said “better dead than smeg” and in the end we did it and we won just About.
I was so disappointed by the follow up episode to this. Thought it would be a chance for genuine change in the Rimmer character - he acts heroically here and is genuinely distressed by the loss of the crew, but in the next episode they talk about it for like 30 seconds and move on with nothing changed.
I think that's why it was so genius to have the antagonists be their future selves. It makes sense that the one thing that might turn Rimmer's character around is being shown that he could be so much worse of a bastard than he is, and how horrific that would be. They wasted this moment going forward, it was such a shame, but it makes sense. Rob Grant left the writing partnership after this series. He was always the one who had a humanising influence on the characters, they became far more flat afterwards.
Close as the series got to the end of Blackadder 4. At the time we didn’t know if another series would ever be made. The wait for series 7 seemed to last forever!
This is exactly what Rimmer is capable of if he doesn’t doubt himself and doesn’t let his inhibitions control his actions. On this day Rimmer became a hero
Better legend than dead! Yes I am, in fact, talking about myself! It's ironic that, in this scene, Rimmer appears to be as legendary as I am on a daily basis B-)
Arnold Rimmers one and only genuine heroic moment. In a choice between death and pride he chose death, he chose Ace.
What a guy.
Amen xD
+darthkahn45 Here Here
yes
indeed he is
Actually, there was another time. In Holoship, Rimmer gave up his dream position to save the woman he loved.
Better dead than smeg is legitimately my favourite quote in the whole show.

When the music starts whilst Rimmer works out how to change what's happening, gives me chills. Such a great scene!

Fantastic change of pace here. It went from comedy to intense drama effortlessly.
This scene still haunts me. Seeing Rimmer scared and actually doing the right thing will stay with me forever.
Arnold Rimmer had the choice between survival, as a fascist pillock, and death, as a hero. And he chose death. What a hero.
What a guy

Can't imagine how people must have been feeling after this! Had to wait 3-4 years for the next series!
It was brutal. And a massive let down as the Grant/Naylor partnership had broken up.
this is the only episode i have seen where RImmer is noble and brave. Not including Ace Rimmer episodes of course.
I was thinking that.

The true Ace Rimmer

I didn’t. It was too same-old same-old with no real danger and everything back the way it was before.
Not so here.
Can't be done. It has happened, it wil have been happened. Your bucket's been kicked, baby.
it's weird, yet satisfying to see rimmer actual doing the heroic thing
Come to think of it, a lot of Red Dwarf died here.
This is my all time favourite scene of red dwarf
Smoke me a kipper... Wait no, wrong episode XD

This was Rimmer's finest performance in the entire series outside of being Ace Rimmer
One of the funniest episodes
The only true heroic rimmer moment
Can't leave without saying good-bye first. Stoke me a clipper, I'll be back for Christmas.

"Out of Time," really should have been the true finale to the series itself. Better they go out in a blaze of glory.
I enjoy the new stuff as well. I think when one of them dies it will be almost impossible to keep going by replacing one of them.
Think the series should have ended there. A classic moment
Truly an amazing moment

They did pick up on the theme of Rimmer becoming Ace in the next series. Arguably this laid the groundwork.
I cried when they died.
It's ok. They're not dead 😢😢😢😢😢
Everybody's dead, Dave.
@@KB-jh3rt Or in this case, everybody's dead, Arnold lol
2:20 Starbug exploding
It's just the best.
Dang 1:45-1:55 is so good.

Explosion....."It's cold outside..."
I need to know the name of the song that plays as Rimmer runs
0:52 LOL
1:25 Good acting by Robert Llewellyn
1:17 - 2:21
Red Dwarf was one of the best BBC shows shame they got rid of it, glad the DAVE channel started it up again.
Then I say fight ❤
What episode is this from?
Out of Time (Series 6, Episode 6)
The Avengers: Infinity War of Red Dwarf.
APEX LEGENDS MUSIC. Anyone??
