    I admire your tenacity but maybe it’s time to listen to what the horse is trying to tell you. Reevaluate, perhaps a different approach, as much as you think her trot improves her expression doesn’t she isn’t a willing participant. You’ve achieved a great deal with this mare which is very impressive, maybe having one of the other horses nearby, present in the arena would help her to settle I know it does with my mare. All the best x

      I am curious…have you watched any of the videos of the horses while they are in the pasture, and how fixated Bella is on Apollo? I am pretty sure Bella would be so distracted by Apollo in the ring that it would be a losing battle for Tara.

      This is friendly advice , take it or leave it , at this stage of Bella’s training she should be just moving forward freely & happily around the arena at walk , trot & halt using gentle half halts ( pressure & release ) at the moment I’m not seeing any release only pressure which she Is rightfully trying to escape/ evade from . Please ditch the elastic reins ( constant contact ) & forget about leg yielding she is way to green for that kind of work .At the moment the only release of pressure I see for her is when you get off & lead her out of the arena .

    I think the work you are putting in is a little ahead of where Bella actually is in her training. She doesn't yet have any support from her hindlegs and as a result is very hollow, crooked and lacks stability. This lack of balance is possibly contributing to her overall demeanour. Continuing to 'ride through it' in this manner is counter productive IMO- she needs to learn how to use herself properly using structured groundwork exercises that you can then transfer to the ridden work.

    I usually would work the horse from the ground, turning the horse to the right and left for 10 minutes; that allows the animal to warm up, study the surroundings and relax. Then the walking must be done for 15 minutes non stop, trotting only thereafter. 😊

    With all due respect: I have watched a number of your videos but I don’t think Bella is ready to be ridden under saddle. She is trying to tell you something is bothering her. You call her naughty, but horses are not naughty they are trying to communicate. She is hollow back under saddle, maybe you could be doing balance in hand work, working on trust, relaxation and suppleness. Not all horses develop the same, she seems nervous and tense under saddle. Maybe check her teeth if you haven’t already, maybe the saddle is pinching or maybe her insides (ovaries etc. may be bothering her). I have never seen her relaxed or happy under saddle. I would have a qualified vet who is aware of a mares needs check her. Her behavior looks to me that she isn’t happy and she is trying to tell you. She looks to evade any of your aids. Again just my opinion, she is a lovely horse but really something is going on. As I stated previously I’m not trying to be disrespectful. Maybe she is just not ready to be ridden mentally. I have always been told baby steps in developing a young horse. Please don’t take this as being rude, there is obviously something going on but it isn’t her being naughty. I truly think she is trying to tell you something is bothering her. 😉

    • @Tara101
      @Tara101  Рік тому +6

      she is saying let me be Just a Field Ornament, and that's not happening. She is not naughty she is stubborn but she only has a few hours riding in total, she is coming along fine. You are expecting to much from a lightly ridden wilful horse. She is a great horse and will soon be on board.

  • @belindastergaard5012

    Hands down, and relax - your horse does what it think it needs to do, or it does what it needs to do to survive. If you panic, and put the reins in the air, she panics to and go faster. and you need to stop using the reins as balance. 😕 I know its hard, and you are doing good! dont think i just want to correct you.

    Dear Tara, I know you are a wonderful horsewoman with a huge skill base and ability, however, you mentioned the other day about a martingale, and I must admit my mind and heart were really happy to hear this and very pleased you talk about it and acknowledge it as a potential option. I believe a running martingale would be an excellent option and tool at present and one you need in your arsenal right now with Bella. Here we have a situation, where you permitted her to keep moving forwards because she chose to, not perhaps because you necessarily asked it of her and it was escalated as Bella got away by raising her head and becoming above the bit along with a combination of her speed and your hands becoming too high and reins less effective as a result. Having a martingale on will provide you with some leverage until she learns to listen and work to your other aids and signals you teaching and reinforcing/asking of her, at least until it becomes second nature to her, and you start riding her out and about especially. You will have plenty of time to get to know her natural gait etc, but for now, you need more and so does Bella. I hope this does not cause offense as you have done a brilliant job with Bella, absolutely Brilliant.

      I agree particularly after watching today’s lesson. She is a strong willed mare and a running martingale would prevent her raising her head up and resisting your control with the reins. I’m not saying it needs to be a permanent part of her tack, but it might be invaluable while she’s still green and young. I worry about her being out on the trail and trying something like that.

    • @pchaynes
      @pchaynes Рік тому +36

      I agree that a running martingale might be useful in this case, but I think the deeper issue is, with all due and much respect to Tara's experience and wonderful foundation she has laid with this mare, is given Tara's mature years and having watched all of these videos, my fear is Tara is going to get hurt. This is a powerful, smart, intelligent mare and she is going to push back every step of the way. She is going to explode one of these days and I fear Tara is going to be badly injured. It is never a matter of if you are going to fall off or get bucked off, it is a matter of when. There is nothing wrong with stepping back and letting a younger trainer put some miles on this mare. That is just my opinion and it really isn't worth much, but it would break my heart to see Tara injured.

    Yes, her trot is improving. I don't think you'd like it as I know you like very forward, but I'd like to see that trot get a bit more relaxed and even tempo instead of her wanting to go into canter. Might get her a bit more balanced and get that canter more balanced also but it did look a lot better when she went onto the correct lead. Hopefully by the time you ride her outside she'll have settled down a lot more. Having said that I am used to Quarter horses and western riding where the horse's head is much lower and they're taught to flex so that in the event of a potential bolt or buck their head can be turned to the side and the one rein stop be put to use. Obviously if the horse hasn't been taught to lower and flex to one side and soften, this would be hard to put into practice. I do realise also that Andalusions have a different natural head carriage than a quarter horse. I think she's going to make a wonderful dressage horse so I really would hate to see her in a bitless bridle or even a martingale as I don't think either of these are allowed in British dressage but I could be wrong - but if needs be....Oh and well done to stay on during her little bolty thing. I have a friend who calls English saddles ejector seats😉😂

      Depends what you mean by fully train? Can take a couple of years just to get them going ok under saddle but it you want to do dressage, jumping or any other competitive discipline it can take 5 years plus, in fact forever as they're always learning and always need reinforcement.

    That is fascinating insight into Bella 🌻 she wants to be with the boys in the paddock and not in the ring 🤔 Whelp, not today. That was definitely a scary moment 😬 Bella is learning to use her speed.

    Ahhhh, she was a bit trying at the beginning, however, I think she now knows who's really boss. She did much better today than yesterday. Day by day she's learning & for me, it's interesting to see the great strides she's making. Love how you are stern, yet loving with her, Tara. Thank you Rens for filming this so we all can enjoy watching Tara teach Bella how to be a great horse!♥

    That was frightening to watch even though I knew it must have had a positive resolution.
    I haven't checked because it's difficult to scroll that far back in time, but I wonder if there are any videos of Farouk's growing pains? I think Apollo was started and backed by others, so I don't imagine there would be any video of his first weeks of learning. Everyone put me straight about anything I have wrong here and let me know if you recall seeing Farouk's training from all those many years ago and I will spend the time scrolling back in time to find them.

    Bonsoir Tara et Rens
    Au début session "oreilles en arriere"🥴🥴🥴 et la suite a montré que Bella ne voulait pas travailler.
    La suite a été mieux... Bella n a pas encore compris que plus tard elle irait en balade. Pour le moment elle veut jouer avec ses copains et embêter Farouk.
    Patience patience... Bella est très intelligente. Elle sait ce qui est mieux pour elle. C est une battante.
    Grosses bises mes amis🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🦄🦄🦄🩷🩷🩷🪷🪷🪷

    I dont understand why you said the saddle was slipping but then you dont dismount to tighten the girth? Did you do all that extra riding with a loose saddle??

    She settled down more quickly today and her balance is steadily improving as she learns to manage the weight of a rider. Your balance is excellent… I wonder if she felt the girth a little loose and this bothered her at the start? Anyway as usual you managed it all well. You got the saddle into position and reset your balance which settled her again instantly. Fabulous. I am so enjoying your videos. Thank you!

    Well as I guess this is in GB, find a Bach flower therapist,she can help to choose the right flowers used for training . You will be amazed what these remedies do.!
    Wirth a try...
    And if she is lunged or a free go about in the arena might help her. She is adorable and so are you❤❤❤❤❤

    I recall being taught to get off after the warm up and cinch in the saddle as it shifts once it warms up and gets softer? I’d have been off to tighten it up and remount finish the session. She’s a handful and willful so she’s a bit unpredictable.

    its interesting i have 3 mares and training them they can be such drama queens more than geldings always over thinking things but once all that passes with training you will get that little extra more than a gelding , although your geldings are beautiful and spirited 😊

    Hi Tara and Rens, I am very glad you are an experienced rider Tara and reacted quickly enough to avoid a fall. Did you have to tighren the girth before mounting again? Bella seemed more relaxed today - her legs in her trot looked much less stiff and she lifts her front legs nicely. Maybe she has been watching Apollo! As for not liking to walk, well you did want a forward going horse! LOL 🐎❤
