I learned about Harlem renaissance only because Im in school for an art class. I'm only watching this video because we didn't cover it as extensively as i was interested in it. I endorse it all, but formal education still raises awareness.
Are y'all gonna do a segment on Deaf theater? Bernard Bragg just died so I think it would be really fitting. America needs to know about the contributions of the Deaf community!
wow this whole time i've been thinking Zora Neale Hurston wrote Raisin in the Sun. We even read it specifically for a Harlem Renaissance unit in school, but Lorraine Hansberry wasn't born til 1930 and she didn't write it as a foetus lol
W.E.B. DuBois' grandfather was a French slaveholder. His grandfather pronounced it Doo-bwah, but given the association, DuBois took on the English phonetic pronunciation.
I read in some articles that in Harlem in 1920's there were many drugs like marijuana, cocaine and heroin, I also read that there were many consumers in Harlem at that time, is that true?
Please make a detail video about Lord Shiva . He is much more that what you have mentioned in the previous video about the Hindu gods . I m sure, you will find many many interesting stuffs about Lord Shiva if you research about him ..
Because that was the proper term of the time, and when you study older periods for a living some of the vernacular can make its way into yours, especially when talking about that period
"By us / about us / for us / near us" are the qualities any media about marginalized groups should strive for.
Yeah, I can relate all too much.
What a lovely Christmas gift for a black New York Theatre lover! And everyone else too!

Nothing About Us Without Us!
I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about Raisin in the Sun.
Probably because it came out in '59, long after the heyday of the Harlem Renaissance.
That was a totally different time period. This is not a video about every black play.
Wow... This was great... A lot of nice information here... Thank you for this
As a theater nerd, I love the hell out of your theater history lessons. Keep on keepin' on!
No mention of the Apollo Theater?
When was it constructed?
@@marlonmoncrieffe0728 according to Wikipedia, it opened in 1913, though it wasn't called Apollo until 1934

Is it just me, or is the shot just slightly out of focus?
No you're right, it is out of focus. You can tell by looking at the spots of reflected light in his eyes.
I thought it was pronounced "Dew Bwah" but maybe I'm wrong.
In instances it is, in others it isnt.
W.E.B. Du Bois pronounced his name following standard English phonology.

Hello! What are the BnW movies/docs (footage) used for the vid? Thanks.
I read in some articles that in Harlem in 1920's there were many drugs like marijuana, cocaine and heroin, I also read that there were many consumers in Harlem at that time, is that true?
Maybe it's just me, but a lot of this video looks out of focus, and I'm not talking about the background.
No you're right. You can tell by looking at the light reflection spots in his eyes, they are definitely out of focus. Kinda distracting for sure.
