its a diffent motor, om603 which is also modified with bigger injection pump as well as probably stiffer valve springs, as well as bigger turbo. probably different diff too. just to give you an idea what it takes to do that.

volvo uses vw diesel engines in the older models, in v70 and 850 it's audi TDI engine, so no, they don't have better engines, a merc motor you can simply turn the fuel pump in the bottom, and put a big ass turbo on, and you don't even have to open the motor and do any mods to it
He is not maybe right... he is absolutely right. Till recent years Volvo never developed any diesel engines and MB is doing that for almost 100 years. Since 1922 to be precise. And your Alfa JTD engine isn't even made by Alfa. Fiat diesel engines are real good engines at the moment since they invested a lot of money and aiming on diesel development. In fact, the only good thing about alfa JTD is the engine and maybe the looks, further its still shit quality. End of automotive lesson 2...
