my roommate got a chinchilla despite it being against the rental agreement, mine and our other roommates counsel. He keeps the thing in a cage in his room and poop is literally everywhere in his room and outside his door....I dont think iv ever seen him change the bedding either.....guy is messed up in the head.... So yea, chinchillas are cute and fluffy, but they poop A TON and need a lot of stimulation. dont be like my roommate, im about to call animal control or something simply due to the amount of poop and debris in his room....cant be healthy for the critter.

Their poop isn't that bad. Doesn't exactly smell and it isn't [unless they're unwell or have had too much green food stuff] messy. Usually easy to sweep up. Fleas and ticks are typically never something to worry about. at least on their body since their fluff is so dense

Even if you train your chinchilla to go poo in a litter box, he would have to come and go all night long, it would wake you up. Sorry it's just not the animal for me. The same can be said about indoor rabbits, cats, hamsters... the ticks and fleas aren't going to teleport from the forest to your home, especially if you live in an appartment
I had chinchillas as pets. I couldn't let them run free around my house because of the poopies. But chins need that exercise! The other dilemma is from the daily dust baths they require leave a daily mess and a fine residue of dust ALL over the wood floors. They ARE super super cute though. Just a mess to keep as pets.

As for the dust/volcanic ash bath You can fix the dustbath issue by giving them a cage house thingy with it in rather than a tray or dish. only possibly place it would come out is the entrance. much easier to deal with.
I had a dwarf bunny and a chinchilla both poop machines. Its just apart of who they are don’t get those type of animals if u cant deal with it. I love my chinchilla he has the best personality ever. I would never give him up.
There is a way to get them little diapers if it's a problem for some. Just be sure to position it only on the butt of them though so they don't get pee in their fur... and your chin might have to get used to it tbh, as I've heard some just clean take them off and some are okay with it.
Bunny Mummy here, same sorta thing. 200-300 droppings a day. I often check the Poo Production, having an elderly rabbit, helps alert me to health problems. Plus, random fact, rabbit's poo is the best manure out there, higher nutrients.
