I was terrified the first time I heard one of ours screaming in the middle of the day, I thought she’d hurt herself!! I’ve since learnt it’s a demand for attention 😂
Oh same here, I've learnt about all the sound besides that "attention scream". Both me and my husband thinks it sounds like a dog squeek toy. I thougt it was a sleep sound as well. The most frustrating about not knowing what it is (until now ofc) is that we both have been anxious that it's a hurting sound, like he's wounded or something. Thanks for this perfect informative video. Love your fluffy bois ♡
they are all so chatty! such good boys! my chinchilla is a female and mostly uses her body language to get her point across, i rarely ever hear her talk like this! she also kind of cuddly (more so than other chinchillas ive seen), and im happy to hear that chirping does indeed express happiness, since she does occasionally announce herself when being pet 🥰
My baby passed away quite suddenly at nearly 8 years old. I still miss her to this day, she was my first and so far only Chinnie, so I did a lot of research and learned as I went when she did something new and unexpected. She did chirp very often, so knowing it was a happy and cheerful noise makes me feel that I must’ve done something good for her. I can only hope and pray I made her even as close to as happy she made me. RIP Zelda, love you sweetheart 💜
Awww, you gave her a beautiful life! I believe our little companions stay near us even after crossing the Rainbow Bridge. My first chin was named Zelda, too, and I see it’s the same for another person in the replies! Wonder what the Venn diagram of chin owner interests looks like I personally named my Zelda more with the game in mind, but we joked it was for Zelda Fitzgerald since I majored in English. My other chin was Zora, also connected with Legend of Zelda but Zora Neal Hurston, too
Relieved to hear more chinchillas bark when dreaming. Both of my chins do it and it always made me jump and go check on them as I thought it was an alarm call of sorts, but I could never figure out what startled them so, they seemed happy and fine when it happened. Over time I began to think it had something to do with them sleeping but I was never 100% sure.
I think the dreaming implies bad dreams. Something in the dream startles them into calling the alarm. My chillchilla always looks so out of it when she does the barking/alarm call
chillchillas will gradually make more noises the more time you spend with them. When they learn that this is a form of communication, they use it more and more. They are very social and adapt to those that are part of their chillchilla clan
Even when they are angry or annoyed, they are so cute. I kinda wish I knew someone with Chinchillas that I could play with. It’s cruel really, that such adorable animals don’t like to be cuddled.
It depends on the animal... each one is very different from others. One is quiet, other is loud, and so on. My chinchila is a very cute boy who loves to be pet and loves to play with his wood toys alone, depending on the day 😊
They have to warm up to you. Mine didn't seem to love it, not like a dog or cat, but eventually they'll approach you, and there are spots they'll lift there little paws for to be pet.

Omgggg, thank you so much! My chinchilla grunts a bit and I could never find anywhere that told me what it meant so this is going to be so helpful making her happier 🙏
Chinchillas are so adorable and this video proves to be very useful in knowing more about them and their way of communicating. Thank you very much for sharing 😃.
I have been a Chinchilla owner for many years and I even got 2 set of babies from my Chinchillas. They are big personalities and use different sounds and even barks. My Chinchillas could bark too often if their daily rouitine was disturbed or changed. Visiting family staying over night could upset them just to give you one example.
This is such a good video! When I first got my chinchilla, he used to bark every night. I think he was afraid of the dark, because after a couple nights I gave him a night light in his room and he hasn't barked in the middle of the night since. Now he mostly makes happy squeaks, although he will make grunting sounds at the small broom I use to sweep up poop in his cage every now and then. 😅
im a new chinchilla owner and most of the time shes chattering her teeth, the video explanation got me worried to be honest :/ is there a specific source i can read from that would help ease my worries?
kacking is the funniest thing. The barely "I'm touching you" and the chilllchilla responds with, "You fight me! You commit the war crimes! How dare you assault my lush fur with the greasy fingers! BARK BARK BARK BARK"
wow never ever heard chinchillas be so vocal... and i helped run a petsmart for a decade back in my day.... lol this was insanely interesting... and very cool to see how committed you are to keeping such a nice habitat for your pets.
It was hard not to cry while watching this. I just lost my chinchilla on Christmas morning (2023). She was such a sweetheart and I loved her so much. She just died suddenly and so young and I will never stop mourning her. I miss you, diamond. My sweet girl. I wish you'd come back to me
Is it abnormal that I don't hear them chirp that often while they play? Occasionally one or two of them, usually the same ones, do it pretty quietly. It's always so cute. When my triplets were born (accidental pregnancy, apparently one of the two girls living together was actually a boy haha!), they would chirp all the time to find their mom, and she would chirp back. They would do it around their dad too. I got him neutered so he could be with the mom and not get her pregnant again (they are besties and it's so sweet), and while he was healing in a separate cage I would hold the babies up to his nose and they would always squeak happily at him. He would sometimes do it back too, or would at least be curious. It's adorable. Now several times a week I'll find all of them, kids and parents, in a big cuddle puddle together 😭🥰 it's adorable!! The babies will need their own cage soon because they're getting big, and I'll miss seeing that. But I'll still let them all play together! (:
This was so adorable to read. Maybe you could get 1 mega cage for all of them? I'm not sure if that would work. Maybe get another cage and somehow try to combine them together?
Was getting him neutered exspensive? I got two chins so they could be cage mates but one of them ended up being a boy. They're already so bonded to eachother but I don't want him getting the other chin pregnant. So I've been curious if it would break the bank to get him fixed.
@@TheFirstCurse1that's a great idea! I've still got them living together right now, it's a little tight so I'd like to somehow find an even bigger cage at some point. But for now, they get along and cuddle a lot! (: vet gave me the go ahead as long as they're all getting enough food and not fighting. I'll have to find a place that makes giant cages!

Those two were so quiet, other than ruffling around in the jungle gym of their cage so I just assume it was how they all were 😅😍
Linus's barking sounds a lot like one of my chinchilla's barking, the one who seems like she does it the most. Also those chirps were sooooo precious 💞

When someone walked into the room, our chinchillas would run up to the side of the cage to be scratched behind the ear. If you strayed too far down to their side or back, they would make that first sound and jump, but just like the ones in the video, they never bit, they just turned around and looked at you like "excuse me?!"
This may sound weird but I've never seen how big a chinchilla actually is. And this is the animal I've been looking for. I've always wanted an animal that I could place in my cupped hands and it would fit perfectly. The chinchilla looks like it would fit in my cupped hands perfectly and I'd carry it for like a few seconds before it gets bored or annoyed and then leaves. But I'll still have that memory of me holding an animal in my cupped hands. I don't know why this is one of my desires but it just must happen before I die

I absolutely love my chins! I have two boys. Axel and Goose. Axel I got when he was 3 months old or so, and Goose was surrendered to me when I was working in a Tractor Supply Co. Axel loves attention and screams at like three in the morning. It scares the daylights out of me every time, considering I’m dead asleep! We get our house next year, and I cannot wait to make a room just for my boys! Custom cages and everything.
Started watching and my cat and dog didn't react until the danger-call, and suddenly both of them were *very* interested in my phone before looking around the room 🤣
Thankyou for this. I just got some new chinchillas who are more vocal then my first two and i had no idea what their noises meant whilst doing the bonding process. Turns out he was barking
Thank you!! I heard my Chin barking and I thought he was hurt 😭 (I was watching a yter, and I don’t think he recognized the voice since I haven’t watched the yter near him before)
I once had 3 of them One was pretty chill,it was like a plush animal, allways looking to cuddle One was ALLWAYS escaping the cage, even when i extra secured it,he allways managed to get out And number 3,well he never wanted to get OUT Whenever i took him out of the cage to let him run around, the first thing he did was to get back in
Adorable my son and I love chincillas. We are planning on making them our next pet. We just lost our hamster a few months ago and we was very sad about that. So we both want a pet that lives longer than a hamster or gerbil and that you can keep inside. The chincilla came out as the great candidate as we found out they can live up to ten years. We are both get excited about getting a new pet .
My family lost our female Chinchila, Dalila, when I was young. It was 2002, and Brazil had just been pentachampion for the Fifa World Cup. The amount of fireworks was so massive that Dalila had a heart attack. When we got home, Dalila was dead at the corner of the cage, while Sansão (Samson) and the two babies were at the opposite corner, holding close, as if in mourning. It was horrible. I have always been scared of fireworks and rockets sound, but since that day I hate them. My sister is younger than me, and was so traumatized that my parents ended up sending Sansão and the babies to live in a small ranch in the countrysides... It was owned by an aquaintaince and he said they would be taken good care and live well in a big barn he had there, and his children would care for them.
l had a part black chinchilla called Chivers. After a few years he had to have his front teeth filed as they were too long. Unfortunately he did not survive the operation. Very sad as they can live 15 years. l did not let him out of his cage unattended as he would bite all our wooden furniture. He really did not like being hand held and came alive in the early evening making crashing noises in his large cage. He had some of the noises you have shown here. Thank you for reminding me of Chivers.

Aw ive never heard a chinchilla make any noise before. I was not disappointed
Lol, I love how Linus is like "Stop ruining my fun!"
Chinchilla: you’re not gonna like me when I’m angry! 😡
me: oh no I think I will! lol 😆
I am addicted to watching your chinchillas it must cost a fortune to keep up with them.
💁♂️ This video was EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you so much. I can better understand their needs now. I'm glad I guessed right on the barking. 🥰👍
Like a mix of a Vole and a Guinea Pig with a sprinkling of big-eared bat, Chinchillas are fascinating rodents.
Omg the grunting noise sounds like they are doing a evil laugh lol
As a kid, I had a chinchilla named Lucy that was almost completely silent at all times.
Chinchillas look like a mixture of a bunny and a mouse, so adorable!!! 🥰

Well, it looks like he's laughing🤣
I almost just had a heart attack bc I just got my chin and she started making noises but this helped
Thankyou for this. I just got some new chinchillas who are more vocal then my first two and i had no idea what their noises meant whilst doing the bonding process. Turns out he was barking
Thank you!! I heard my Chin barking and I thought he was hurt 😭 (I was watching a yter, and I don’t think he recognized the voice since I haven’t watched the yter near him before)
the sound of them screaming so so funny 🤣 and whenever my chin barks at night my dog just sits near the hallway wondering what that sound was
I once had 3 of them
One was pretty chill,it was like a plush animal, allways looking to cuddle
One was ALLWAYS escaping the cage, even when i extra secured it,he allways managed to get out
And number 3,well he never wanted to get OUT
Whenever i took him out of the cage to let him run around, the first thing he did was to get back in
So cute and cuddly 😊
Their cute little chirps remind me a bit of guinea pigs! ❤️ I love how sweet they sound, even when they're annoyed. lol
It's like a bunny mixed with a mouse 🌝🐥
I've never had a pet chinchilla but they seem like really lovely creatures. I might have to introduce one into the family 😊
The fluffiness is out of this world ❤
Adorable my son and I love chincillas.
I just adopted 2 chinchillas from my manager and heard them barking for the first time yesterday!
Sebastián my lil chin barks in his sleep when he's dreaming. It's adorable.
Holy!!! Chatty little fuzz ball. How adorable! I had no idea they were so active and chatty!!🤣👍🥰🥰❤️🇨🇦
The grunting sounds like miniature hyenas. So cute!
This is so beautiful.. i'm in tears right now :')
It reminds me of when my kids were babies lol Forever trying to figure out what was wrong
WHY IS THIS SO CUTE HELP
Chin sounds are the best!!!
My youngest of my 4 is so vocal. She loves to scream especially when i'm on zoom calls with my teachers 😂
Can’t stop watching this video for some reason
l had a part black chinchilla called Chivers.
