The writers really thought they did something here. Zoey is right, they DO just sound jealous.
The writer is a rookie cut her some clack lol... All jokes aide though... It was really Maya's fault. Penny, Dijonay and LaCi were jealous that Zoey got picked but they actually did a decent job of keeping their composure till fake-woke Maya sprung up and played the race card to express her own jealousy. She had been acting strange towards Zoey throughout the first season and this was her opportunity to attack, Maya knows what she did, she played on the girls' emotions when they were vulnerable the exact same way LaCienega said the right words to bring out Penny's jealousy back when Dijonay won the poetry contest and Penny was stunned.

I think the thing that really bothered me about this episode was just how badly they treated Zoey. Like with how they straight up said to her no one ever asked her out before so why would the famous guy like her besides the fact she is white. They basically said in translation 'you're nothing special and no one's first pick.' Poor Zoey, this was the first time someone "liked her" who was "cool," of course our favorite nerdy ginger would be stoked. If you grew up as a shy nerdy girl you know how it it felt thinking you were "less attractive" than everyone else. The fact her "friends" basically said to her there is no reason for such a famous and attractive guy to like her was low key really fricked up. Penny was the only decent human being, I do wish Penny spoke up more though. That's So Raven presented colorism soooooo much better. I just don't think it was right to do it with personal attraction, kids already struggle with feeling okay with who they are attracted too and this just seems like it could be confusing for them. It's not that it was so much a terrible idea to make this ep as it was that they just rushed it too fast and did it little justice. If they really wanted to stick with this idea/ep I think it should have been a two parter.

Actually I have to really agree on your comment on how That’s So Raven presented and addressed colourism much better in one episode. I do remember watching this episode as a little white girl myself and I found myself feeling really angry and disgusted by the store manager who refused to hire Raven just because she’s black and that she doesn’t hire black people and at the same time, I’ve developed compassion and sympathy for Raven being totally discriminated because of her colour. That’s just wrong to me.
It’s because the writers like many are trying to draw more lines until people are so tripped up over one line that they don’t see the other they crossed. It’s to fuel strife and confusion. I don’t care about my white friend getting treated differently because people are ignorant. I don’t even use the word white privilege because me and my dad who is black can literally do the same things. I’m not beating beaten and being forced to pick cotton so it doesn’t really matter to me and I’m not oppressed. At some point it’s just people looking for something to get offended by. I don’t get mad at my friends when they are happy unless they are being used and then I confront the problem. I take care of my friends and I do what Jesus says, not what the world says. We are all equal and need to continue representing that in how we treat each other regardless of what someone else does. How are we helping if we join in on the racism and bias on our own side? It’s not the color that’s the problem it’s the culture and that’s on all sides for every color of human. I’m sick of Disney pushing their foolish agenda and teaching people to go against God and be the problem instead of helping to be the solution.

This episode is about colorism, there are black girls and guys out there that only date white people, as opposed to black. If it's a preference, then that's a different story, but the guy who asked Zoey out, really only was interested in her because she's white, something she can't help. Everyone is upset, because they were passed over for Zoey. To help it make sense, watch the episode itself or Colorism on this episode here on UA-cam. But yeah, he asked her out because she's white, he didn't care about her personality or anything.

I would have loved it if at the end of the episode, someone had bluntly asked Noah why he didn't ask the other girls out, only for Noah to point out they have boyfriends and he respected that.
Just to highlight how the girls were chasing a lighter skinned famous boy, while ignoring thier dark skinned boyfriends, and that Noah had respected thier relationships more then they did.
They were such hypocrites getting mad they weren’t asked out.. despite already being in relationships lol…
I swear we need one episode that's just 20 minutes of Suga Mama calling each and every one of these girls out (Penny included). The entirety of the first series was already a good enough case; but this episode, alone, proves why none of them should be friends. I've never seen a group of friends (in both fiction and real life) so *constantly* ready to turn on each other at the drop of a dime over EVERYTHING.
Honestly suga mama is the only one to talk sense in this revival, if you saw juneteenth, she wasn't even helping out in that protest cuz I'm sure she was just like, "I'm out, there's nothing at this point even a good spanking will do to them, and I don't have the energy for 2 dozen people!"
I just can't believe how terrible friends they keep in their lives! If I were Zoey, I'd cut off their toxicity completely and find people who actually deserve to be my friends! By the end of the episode, they tell Zoey it wasn't her fault; and yet through the majority of episode...they treated her like she was at fault! Seriously, why is this so show bent on keeping such toxic relationships?!

This episode would have made more sense if Noah was shown bashing on Zoey’s friends because they were non-white, but all that was said is he has a dating preference which is something we all have.

Not to mention two of them have boyfriends they were willing to dump to go on that date with Noah.
Also, SO WHAT if the only reason he asked her out is because she's white? Doesn't that just make them negative nancies because he didn't like them? I really dislike this episode.
please learn the definition of colorism, it’s typically between poc members of the same racial group with different skin colors.. has nothing to do with white people.

At this point I don't think the writers know what good* friendships are.
True friendship would be a Disney moment of perfection where everything gets resolved for all parties well. This is more like reality and what could happen to teenagers. Sometimes they don't resolve things, REAL people are flawed. And that's why I like this show, it is flawed, the characters are flawed. They are not the perfect Disney hero or villain.

To be fair, This is not the level of petty you'd even expect from the girls If this show didn't have Maya in it to light everyone up with her afro-centric instigating, this would have been more about dijonay being a school gossip again and Lacienega trying to pretend she's a nerdy girl too because she flexes her competitive nature in everything. And in Penny's case she'd disapprove of Noah cause she knows Zoey has so many attributes as a person and Noah doesn't appreciate any of them. 🤷 That's the formula of these charecters and I think the writers done lost their mind doing such a thing to embarrass ethnic girls over the whole "white women stealing or men" mindset. They can't fool us into being convinced that zoey was supposed to apologize for not understanding.
That is why she was added. To put that into the series which was never needed to begin with.
Penny is really good to stand up for Zoey to stand up against everyone’s problems/nonsense!
This episode really bugs me because a) their animosity towards Zoe is unjustified in every way (cause she did nothing and yet he was attracted to her for her skin tone) and b) instead of delving into the why of Noah having a preference for white girls, they skip that and go straight to being attracted to specific skin tones is wrong. Like seriously, if it was just his preference and nothing more, there isn't anything wrong with that cause we ALL have preferences and are attracted to specific aspects that we never had any control over. BUT if his reasoning for only dating white girls was based on stereotypes, then it would have been a valid reason to be angry at him.
The only good part of this episode was “oh snap it’s Zoey, and she’s strapped!!!” That was absolutely hilarious
This is a good storyline but it’s upsetting that Zoey gets bashed pretty hard because she didn’t know the boy’s intentions. If anything all that energy should have been directed at the Noah character. He specifically went out of his way to replace Zoey with another white girl after she found out his true intentions. Also after she dropped him for her friends sake. I get the message it’s trying to convey but seriously they had the wrong person with this episode.
I feel like if they made Zoe explain how her friends were making her feel, and highlighted a little more on that Noah guy being shallow, this could have worked.
Let us agree right here, right now; for this has been hanging on my head since i saw the episode.
It was never ever, ZOEY'S FAULT, and she is pretty, smart, cool and a kind person to have any worthy boy hit on her and ask her out. Those guys minus Penny are all toxic and jealous that they were passed over and so it hit their INFLATED EGO'S, like get over it, Dijonay even has a boyfriend, like girl drink some water if your so thirsty.
Secondly, if they were so "worried" for her, they should have told her their thoughts, rumors, and discussed the matter, instead they acted like venomous snakes just because their feelings were hurt.
Don't get me wrong it is wrong to only date someone just because of the color of their skin but firstly people have preferences and you can either move on and thank God you dodged a bullet or let them have a place in your heart with hate and sadness.
I only wished that Penny would have said along the lines of: "GUYS SHUT UP!! Look, it is not Zoey's fault that she was chosen just because of her skin color or not but we are the jerks for making her feel like that just because she was born this color that's why she should get the hate. Zoey is our best friend and she has proven time and time that she has our backs. A guy asked her out, and he is hot but it doesn't mean or will always mean that it is because she is white chocolate. That's just us making her seem like she has nothing else going for her. And Zoey, I am sorry for not speaking up to this and not telling you that yes we heard the rumors but we wanted to let you know and not because i thought you weren't worthy of him but that he just didn't choose you for your wonderful self, can you forgive me?" That is friendship but alas
Color profiling is a big problem still present today but let us not let us take the anger or frustration out on those unsuspecting people, that we love, cherish and have proven to be our allies in the long run.

I really think the parents should have gotten involved in this. If i was Penny's mom and I heard that kind of junk coming from any of these kid's mouths, i would be shocked beyond all things and question Penny big time. Seriously??? Considering how colorism isn’t really addressed as much to kids or teen media aside from online media, this could’ve had a great lesson. But all it did was make all of us collectively see how fake and catty most of the group can be towards their own.
The one thing I liked about this episode was Zoey still getting with a boy who liked her for her, but this episode was painful to sit through. 💀

I know the show was trying to depict colorism in this episode but they really missed the mark.
Dijonay has always been an outspoken flirty character with guys interested and sometimes not interested in her.
So what about this situation with a guy not being interested in her separates it from other situations where a guy isn't interested in her.
Why isn't the 15cent being attracted to Penny over her not colorism but this is.
There's ways to show colorism that doesn't devolve to " Zoey's an ugly nerd so how could anyone famous or attractive like her for her."
This episode however did depict a great message of envy and how it's important to self reflect on insecurities rather than jumping to conclusions or taking frustration out on ur friends.
This episode was handled horribly.
This is why I couldn’t watch this growing up. The girls toxicity & the bs of Penny’s parents. I get its a cultural thing & it’s great to have that representation! Absolutely! Its just too annoying for me.

Because Maya's true feelings against Zoey and her whiteness were exposed, she was the one who said "he only dates white girls" when she saw the girls were in shock that Noah picked Zoey over them. They tried to keep their composure and contain their envy, but Maya extracted their emotions before they could fully process them. Often times when people act on their emotions they fail to think logically. LaCienega is especially notorious for this. The jealousy was already there but they at least tried to contain it until Maya burst their bubble giving them an excuse to become angry. It's certainly an eff'd up situation.
Because the one thing from the original that just HAD to be kept for the sequel was how most of Penny's friends are complete human trash.

Wow! Zoey dressed up like Merida from Disney/Pixar's Brave & she looks so beautiful with her outfit right before she arrived at the Prouds' house & suddenly, things got out of hand altercating with Penn, Dijonay, LaCi, Micheal, & Maya in the process. Sadly, I kind of felt so bad for Zoey about this situation they made about a person who took likings for Zoey because of her own race. However, being an outcast is a very complicated circumstance to acknowledge some feedback between their own friendships.
At least Penny was tryna be reasonable, everyone else REFUSED to let Zoey be happy or feel "Pretty"
This episode started so strong but the wrap up at the end was way too quick. They never even explained why Noah only dates white girls. Anytime they tried to talk about preference it was immediately shut down and not examined from the other end... So I guess it's realistic at least lol

It just occured to me... Maya may've been confirming about the white girl preference but she was actually one of the few who didn't give Zoey shit about it.
She literally couldn't give a toss about his dating preference and whether Zoey dated him or not. Just spat facts as she heard them.
I'm glad you see it too. It's sad how Maya's getting the blame for how her friends (mainly LaCienega, Dijonay, and to a lesser extent, Michael) chose to act. A lot of the hate stems from her being the woke friend, and how unpopular wokeness is in the modern media.
The fact that they assumed it was because she was white without any sort of proof just goes to show how little confidence they have in Zoey.

Tbh, kinda hate the decision of them making the guy actually having a fetish for white girl. They made Zoey seems like an idiot at best and an ignorant at worst and in a way justify her friends' racially motivated thoughts. They should have made separate instances with each dealing with interracial relationship, jealousy, and fetishization of race.
Well tbh... It was really all on Maya. She was jealous just like all the other girls, but she used the race card at the right time to get Dijonay and LaCienega riled up because she's the woke activist... Maya's been acting funny towards Zoey this whole time tbh, I guess this was the perfect opportunity to attack.

The colorism episode should have been centered around a family member maybe treating Penny differently compared to a darker skinned cousin or family member because that's usually when I see it the most.

Zoey is right, they are jealous that not every guy they find cute is gonna ask them out. Zoey and Penny need news friends, they’re friends are terrible, weak and absolutely toxic. Real friends would congratulate you or take the hint, acknowledging that your man is taken. Not these petty girls who blame race as to why there crush doesn’t like them back. In other words they’re saying “Your ugly and he only likes you because your white”. I’m actually concerned as to what would happen if they all liked a SAME guy, someone gets with them, and they actually break off their friendship over a guy their going to forget about in a week. Idk why the director wrote this episode considering it’s only making the girls look worse🤷♀️
Not only should the parents have stepped in, they should've taught their children some respect. They were so aggressive towards her. Even if he was only into white girl, it's a preference, and maybe he rlly liked her for who she was.
The adults walked away after watching a girl getting bullied....that somehow feels pretty realistic

Like imma be flat out honest, I really think the creators need to reconsider this friendship bc that’s really the only reason why I don’t watch this no more because instead of dealing with the toxic friendship and replacing it with more positivity, it’s rather being promoted and nothing gets fixed. This teaches kids that it’s ok to hang out with haters and toxic ass people, let alone toxic behavior.

And by the way, if that’s the case, then that man is shallow, not loving the girl for who she is inside, and a good friend or support her. When the boy breaks her heart, they stand together to make that boy miserable.
They projected their anger at the wrong person Zoey didn’t ask Noah out HE did because of her SKIN like Zoey isn’t at fault she actually thinks Noah like’s especially because of the fact that not many guys find her attractive save Myron and when the young heartthrob picks her over her prettier friends she’s of course shocked and excited that she would expect her friends to be happy until maya dropped the hard truth on Noah. And of course Zoey wouldn’t see that on account of her mixed group of friends where they value each other despite going toxic at times and colorism never really was a ‘discussion’ with them until that hard truth came. And because their emotions ran high they all directed their hurt towards Zoey made her the bad guy since they can’t for some weird reasons blame Noah. And penny was stuck in the middle cause if she tried to defend Zoey her friends would think she’s capping but because she didn’t say one word Zoey took it as being on their side and thinking ill of her.
The fact they accept a boy as a Disney princess before Accepting Zoey is just mind blowing...
