yes, and the new 2.4L seems like something decent for modding. ive seen enough people with mostly stock bottom (changing the headgasket) on the FA20 push 300-400whp which is more than double its own output. this engine supposedly has stronger internals as the FA20's problem was that the rods were skinny and angled for easy assembly
Awesome video man, good to see some gains. Fun story, my friends old 2001 forester picked up huge. Last summer he called me up saying it was running weird slow and sounding funny.
Between the 3 huge vacuum lines pulling crankcase back thru the stock intake, and it being SOOO heat soaked, it was literally recording 65 degree celcius intake air temps at part throttle, and like 55 at WOT. It was pulling all the timing it could and still detonating its ass off.
I put some piping onto it, put a cone filter in the fender well and added a catch can. Thing was recording 30 degree intake air temps at crusing and 28 WOT on the SAME AFTERNOON

Not only is the charcoal filter a restrictor, but its not replaceable. So eventually it will become MORE of a restrictor and become more clogged

Not surprised by the stock filter vs K&N. This isn’t 1999 anymore… a good quality paper filter can flow very adequate, enough to negate any power advantage of aftermarket drop-in filters.
Put some miles on both filters and then you will see why the k&n is worth it….flows better under restriction due to contaminants
@@martinrps13 yeah but, K&N allows more dust and sand particles to get into the engine, and for the price of a K&N filter i can buy 5-6 normal filters that will last me about the same nr of miles as K&N recommends to use their filter.

I take out the charcoal filter on all my cars. It's just to eliminate smell/emissions after you turn the car off.

Love the testing. Def worth removing the diaper lol, kinda surprised the k&n did nothing but I'm sure the engineers used a good flowing stock filter being a sporty car.
Def a Toyobaru, the engine cover, air filter and engine/exhaust sound confirmed its not a typical Subie boxer. Lol
theres people with the stock intake box on the FA20 pushing over 300whp. not sure what advantages this would give

The D4-S (dual injection) system belongs to Toyota...the rest of the car is Subaru (minus the rear suspension differences btwn the two cars)
Minus the body as well, Subaru designers never come up with a very nice looking car.

I think the gr performance filter is just a k&n filter rebranded, or functionally equivalent. Someone on the forum that got one said the maintenance instructions were to use the K&N filter cleaning solution

223.8 whp is very good. That amounts maybe a bit over 250 bhp (15% trans loses. Others calculate with 18%)
18% are for AWD automatic. A manual RWD would be like ~ 13% loss.

@@Eugen-Eat 13% loss ratio that is 29.094+223.8 that is still over 250 infact 252.894hp to be exact pretty good for stock car with a simple intake hack this car with full bolt on and a tuned will do 280 fly wheel hp which is honnestly just about perfect for a back to basic front engine rear wheel drive sports car.
@@patthonsirilim5739 No, even with FBO it will never do 280hp ))) the fact that he uses an inertia dyno confirms the numbers are a bit inflated. On a retarder type Dyno like Mustang these cars make under 210whp completely stock. An air filter doesn't have any effect.

Pretty sure it's just a dumb American requirement for emissions reasons... But it doesn't actually reduce emissions.
This is why USDM version is officially stated as having 228 hp, while the EU version is 234

When I took out the "stock" filter, mine says "GR" Filter and it looks almost identical to a K&N Filter... I have a premium trim GR86

It's a Subaru engine with Toyota D4S fuel injection system. Direct and port injection.

Yes, the engine is underrated. Toyota's 4-cylinder GR Supra makes 255hp, they can't advertise a GR86/BRZ making roughly the same crank power while costing $17k less, so they lowballed it to 228hp.
I have to assume these runs were done in 4th gear which is not 1:1. I recently had my 22 brz with charcoal pad removed, catback and front pipe on a dynojet and it made 205\165. But that was in 5th gear. All the people going around saying how these cars are so underrated are doing the dynos wrong and getting false high numbers. It seems to be a trend across the board, not just with BRZ\86s.

Nice work showing that a high flow filter doesn’t always mean more power, still like them for their washing ability which saves money later.
But I know these cars have a quiet induction noise, did the K&N improve the intake sound a little?
The active sound is still on so no noticeable induction sound increase at least to my ears. Removing the 1-2 (baffles/silencers??) on the intake would probably be more effective for that.
@@solly1g that's a resonator on your intake. Yeah it reduces intake noise but it also softens the air hammer that happens when your intake valve closes. If you delete the resonator, you'll get more intake noise but you'll also get less air in every rpm range. They actually help performance

They should give an factory option for no rear seats - they are useless weight addition because they are never used!

17x9 +45 with A052 245/40. Although it DOES have 3mm spacers all around, that setup did fit on completely stock suspension.
But as someone who just daily drive this car, I don't think removing the filter is necessary as I don't see any real changes at lower RPMs.
Did the car run lean at all with this out?
I took mine out and after about a week I put it back on. Felt like I lost throttle response after the ecu adjusted itself. It’s possible that you’ll get an Hp increase top end but seems like you’ll suffer low end. Maybe messes with the maf/throttle mapping…not sure

They are, otherwise they wouldn't be nearly even with slow WRX STI's(literally watch them on a roll race it's so sad)

The charcoal is so that fumes don’t leak out into the environment out of the airbox
A lot of it has to do with noise and turbulence. Induction noise is one thing companies try REALLY hard to keep quiet.
Toyota GR86 has a "GR filter" that's superior to cheap one Subaru uses

K&N Filters rarely provide much horsepower, but they do filter significantly worse than normal filters. They're not worth running.

They hooked the dyno up to the brakes…..you can even see the front glowing. People should not tune front wheel drive cars because of this.

It’s a kit you can buy from K Power. Not super special. Pure Auto has been doing K swaps for years before K Power using the S2k trans.
I wouldn't recommend removing the diaper for warranty sake and also it would lean the engine out a little bit due to the MAF not being recurved. Depends on how rich they tune these cars. Although, I can see where down the road when these cars get more miles, that part is going to be an issue. Why would they even do such a thing that may lead to another clog? Noise dampening (smell dampening) or no, that is what is called over-engineered. A new intake with tune would be the way to go for sure, unless your dealership is a butthole for any aftermarket parts. LOL Nice info though!
100% wrong on everything you said 😂 the filter does not effect warranty in any way shape or form and removal of it will not change your MAF reading only changes in the diameter of the intake piping where the MAF is placed will lean out your fuel mapping due to improper MAF scaling 🤦♂️

who told you this. this is a 2022 car not a 1984 vehicle. the computer knows exactly what fuel/timing/air. If you go up or down in elevation does the car lean out? no lmao because it has a computer to make adjustments. foolish comment you must be old as hell
It's a charcoal filter put in place for emissions. My understanding is there is no replacement for it if you remove it.
