The reason why they’re short is because they were made to be looped in game.

I love how legitimately flabbergasted an actual musician is when reacting to these themes
Yeah, most of the themes in this game are meant to loop, so they are quite short by design. They loop into themselves rather well, and things move forward fast enough to where they don't feel stale. And while these ones are simple, they introduce or share a lot of leitmotifs that connect to both Undertale and the other chapters of the game. Chapter 2's music just improves on it, so that will be fun when you get to it.
But if you want some extra context to each theme without spoiling:
The Legend - Introductory cutscene describing the background and lore of the world
Beginning - Opening cutscene driving through a comfy town with oddly familiar faces
Checker Dance - Goofy, unexpected mini boss battle (these themes were played out of order as this battle is later on in the game)
Lancer - One of the main characters you interact with. Plays whenever he shows up and has dialogue, and like the theme implies, he's a bit of a goofball.
Rude Buster - Standard enemy battle theme
Scarlet Forest - Mid level theme, maze like area with timing based hazards and dancing enemies
Vs. Susie - Susie is a main character in the game that tags along with you. She's a big tough girl and like the theme says, you're gonna get hurt if you get in her way
You Can Always Come Home - Walking through your home town at the end of the game, meeting even more strangely familiar faces on the way back home
Chaos King - Final Boss of Chapter 1
The World is Revolving - Hidden extra boss, with extra difficulty. He can do anything!
Field of Hopes and Dreams - One of the early level themes, after you've been introduced to a new mystical world and now begin to explore it. One of, if not the most "complex" and "full" themes in the game for that reason.
Field isn’t a “level” it’s the first overworld area (technically the second but we don’t count sixmarks)

Nice choice picking Deltarune. Shame you only did Chapter 1, as Chapter 2 has some absolute bangers and beats Chapter 1 imo. Hope to see a Chapter 2 reaction soon.
Also, Checker Dance is the best music in Chapter 1, hands down. It plays in a fight against a checker piece with the sexiest legs imaginable.

Most of the songs are insanely short because they were designed to loop themselves really well, which is why they sometimes just cut off for seemingly no reason
also entirely fair assessment to be entirely confused (mixed emotions in the title)
It is funny to hear you say that deltarune is so musicaly different from undertale when the song you're hearing is literally an undertale song a little bit remixed(you can always come home is a remix of home from undertale)

Since deltarune isn't completed yet these songs feel like they haven't reached the full level of meaning.
I have a feeling the legend motif is probably going to appear a few more times throughout the story
I'm so excited for a moment like this. Even with these two chapters I love how Toby Fox has uses the motifs. If I get to the end of Chapter 7 and hear a new version of The Legend play like right before the boss I'm gonna pop off lol
I need an extended version of Vs. Susie. Easily in my top 5 Toby Fox songs
exactly, getting attached to these themes and story already and having time to let it all soak in and marinate, knowing he'll iterate on the ideas in more deservedly epic ways down the road in grand climaxes that will result in me appreciating tracks I already love to death even more... I know I'm in for a once in a lifetime treat.
@@charicole105THIS!!! i saw marcomeatball (i think) say that her theme felt "restrained" or "held back" (since she wasn't fighting with pure intention to kill lancer) and i REALLY wanna hear her theme when she goes all-out.
I haven't ever really considered that, but yeah! Now that I look back on it, a lot of the general themes(/themes of consistent main characters) feel like they haven't quite been fully realized yet

I think you should've gotten the chance to listen to "Don't Forget". It's less than a minute long and it's THE main theme of the entire game so it's incredibly important. A shame that it didn't make it in here.
"Don't Forget" is to Deltarune as "Undertale" is to Undertale.
Toby Fox said you will hear woodwinds and guitars and feel emotions and we're all like "Yes, Sir. Right away, Sir!"
I never noticed it before, but I love how the music box sound is actually playing the Hopes and Dreams motif from Undertale (2:49 in this video).
Also a bit of context:
- Rude Buster is the main battle theme for Deltarune.
- Susie is a party member, but is pretty… rebellious in the first chapter. It takes a while before they listen to the rest of the party’s directions, and the Vs. Susie track plays when they temporarily turn on the party, making a boss fight.
- Chaos King is the final boss track, and if it sounds familiar, the boss is Lancer’s father, and Lancer’s theme comes in.
- The World Revolving plays during a fight against Jevil, a secret boss. Both Chapter 1 and 2 of Deltarune have had a lovable secret boss with a banger theme, so it’s kind of a trend at this point.
Surely you mean one of Lancer's dads? He also has his lesser dad and his girldad.
...I swear that kid collects dads the way most kids collect pokemon cards and I _really_ hope that trend continues.
It's not just the Hopes and Dreams motif, it's the motif from the very intro of the game that then gets used in like half of the game's tracks lol
@@TheMasterd333 I know what you mean, but I feel like a lot more people will instantly remember the epic theme of the true ending final boss than the 8-bit track with no more than two notes at once, that’s playing while they are wondering if this game is really worth the hype around it. (Nothing against that track though - it still fits perfectly for its role.)
Vs Susie isn’t where you fight Susie, it’s when you fight Lancer as Susie.

Field of Hopes and Dreams has always been my favourite from Chapter 1.
There's a couple tracks in Chapter 2 that top it, but it's still in third place.
I love hearing people enjoying Toby's music. He's my biggest inspiration as a composer and game developer.

Chapter 2 has some bangers but going back to chapter 1 reminds me how amazing Toby Fox is at using leitmotifs and creating so many different moods in his music. Can’t wait for chapter 2’s reaction!
If you want another good indie game to react to I recommend Celeste or maybe OneShot. OneShot feels more spacey but has some great tracks like ‘On Little Cat Feet’ or ‘Eleventh Hour’.

So many of these songs are so short and end so abruptly because Toby wanted them to be easily loopable. Hearing them in game is a whole different experience.

Most video game music are short because they're made to loop. They will play on repeat forever in the game until you progress to something different like another level/area or a cut scene.
After Deltarune, I would love to see Terraria Calamity's OST. Its creation is fascinating, considering a vast majority of the songs were made by one person - however every track has a lot of personality that you can recognize without any context.
If you do decide to check it out, prepare yourself for anything, causs that is basically what you'd get.

Can’t wait for chapter 2! Always love these reactions so much because it’s exactly how I would react to these blindly.
I would really recommend listening to OMORI. Its like A mix of Undertale and Hollow Knight in its wide variety of music. Some stuff I’d recommend is the Title Screen, Spaces in Between, By Your Side, A Home for flowers (tulip), It Means Everything, See You Tomorrow, Worlds End Valentine, Underwater Prom Queens, OMORI, Duet. I would put in My Time but it’s copyright 😭 anyways all of the tracks are really great so take your time with Chapter 2! :D
I think the reason they seem so short compared to undertale is because most uploads of undertale songs loop at least once, I could be wrong though
With the exception of Megalovania, all of the songs she listened to were the album release which don't loop at all.
I kinda think all the songs are about the same length, with a few exceptions.
Darkness Falls is probably the most underrated track in Chapter 1. Not even surprised it didn't make it it, but you should _definitely_ give it a listen regardless

Songs in Deltarune actually trend the same length or longer than Undertale in a lot of cases, last time you just listened to a lot of final boss themes while this time you listened to a lot of regular themes 😅

I absolutely love the songs by Toby Fox, easily Undertale and Deltarune are either my absolute favorite or in the very highest tier of ost's out there imo, and Deltarune isn't even fully released! But these songs are mostly short because, like the Undertale songs, they are designed to repeat, so they feel much more natural leading from the end to the beginning again seamlessly. Please do Ch2 soon though!
I wasn’t expecting only Chapter 1, and the themes here are Chapter 1’s best. (though if you do a part 2 you might want to listen to “Rouxls Kaard” off camera for context of the “It’s Pronounced Rules” track)
Vs Susie goes insanely hard. Susie is a violent tormentor at the start, and this is the point where she feels her best friend (Lancer) betrayed her, so she lashes out all her rage on him.
The Legend is exactly what the title is. It’s the legend of the Deltarune world.
Checker Dance is the boss theme for the mid-boss of Chapter 1- K. Round. He’s a checker who got crowned.
Lancer is Susie’s best friend, and the son of the Chaos King. This is his theme.
Scarlet Forest is the theme for the second overworld area, also called as such.
Beginning is the theme for the start of the game (not really, the track titled “Another HIM” is the beginning of the game)
The World Revolving is the theme of a clown, a jester, Jevil. He likes to say “Chaos Chaos”, and “I Can Do Anything!”
You Can Always Come Home is the main character’s house theme.
Chaos King is the first final boss’ theme. He’s Lancer’s father.
Field of Hopes and Dreams is the first overworld area, and a banger of a track.

What I love most about Toby's music is how he reuses motifs from other songs that are relevant to the character and it works out so well.

A lot of the Undertale themes are actually equally as short! The sample of themes you listened to included many of the longer ones, but a lot don't even reach a full minute
I remember being super shocked when I first looked up the ost, bc they loop so naturally and pack so much punch that I hadn't even realized how short they were

I could be mistaken here, but I think you managed to dodge Undertale's main motif in your Undertale OST reaction video! Which is interesting.
There are some songs in the Deltarune OST that pay homage to Undertale's motifs.
Guess it's something to look forward to in another Undertale OST reaction, huh? Not that I'm going to assume we'll be getting those of course.
Honestly it’s weird but nice going back to Chapter 1 after so long, after chapter 2 you mostly forget how many bangers this chapter had. Still, can’t wait to see your reactions to Chapter 2.
If I had to recommend a game other than chapter 2 though, I’d say Shovel Knight. It has one of the best osts in any indie game in my opinion, and I feel like you would love it.
I’ve seen your reaction to Mario Galaxy’s ost and I definitely recommend checking out Paper Mario Color Splash’s ost. Specifically these themes: Ruddy Road, Cherry Lake, Sunglow Ridge, Juggling Bros, Emerald Circus, Rumble with Wendy, and the World Map Medley.

If you want more context for deltarune's world: (no major spoliers) it takes place in a similiar universe and has some returning characters but they are no longer as important to the plot. The biggest difference is that the focus of the story is completly different and there are lots of new characters to meet and worlds to explore. As you noticed the game is cut into chapters, each one has a new place to explore and strenghtens the bonds between different characters. Currently 2/7 are out and take several hours to complete plus each contains several important secrets 😁
Remember that just like in Undertale, leitmotifs are very important and tell you more about the characters, places or events. There are a few motifs returning from undertale but deltarune also obviously has its own, in the form of the song "don't forget" (you need to check it out too! 👍). Also, some songs will probably get a wider meaning or more remixes in the future, due to the game still being pretty far from complete
To me, chapter 1 seems a little bland and very short now that we have chapter 2 but it's still an extremally memorable experience. It's a really interesting twist on the previous game and does a good job showing you what deltarune has to offer. I'm very excited for deltarune's future ❤

The themes are meant to loop, the only reason they are apparently short it's because they stop in their looping point, you can just listen to them twice or play the game.

The reason The World Revolving stops so abruptly is beacuse it loops around and gets back into the fun instantly
The length of the themes is a sort of taste; it gives a reasonable confusion but when you listen to "extended versions" of those, usually you have just enough time to get the hang of the emotions. By looped themes of old-school but new looking it is always a thing. Besides, it's always nice to hum a melody which I've been doing since I was four ;D

Perhaps when you react to the Ch. 2 sound track, have your members get you an image or video of what is happening when the song plays, even a description with or without spoilers along with it. I think that would help with the confusion and understanding problem. The themes are ment to loop, so they end fast so they can start again in game.

Y'know I initially saw you and was like, "Oh another reactor... cool I guess" and now, especially after You Can Always Come Home... you haven't played and yet... you understand and that hurts me... in a good way. Toby's OST's will ALWAYS make me cry especially after LIVING through the games. I can't wait to see you play through them... even if you don't post it, play it with an open mind and open heart.
the reason its so short is simply because its the whole song. in the game, you dont hear the song and then silence. it loops back to the beginning. as of why toby fox decided to post it without it looping is beyond me. thankfully there are other fans of his music to do that for him.

- Checker Dance is a boss theme
- Lancer is indeed a character's leitmotif
- Rude Buster is the main battle theme
- Scarlet Forest is a location theme
- VS Suzie is a boss fight
- You Can Always Come Home is the theme that plays in the main character's house
- Chaos King is the theme of the final boss of Chapter 1
- The World Revolving is the theme of Chapter 1's superboss (basically Chapter 1's Megalovania)
- Field of Hopes and Dreams is a location theme
If you want them longer just right click and loop the video, or there’s versions uploaded that are already looped
I'm surprised no one suggested or enough people didn't vote for you to listen to Don't Forget. Though if you plan to play the game, it would make sense to leave it a surprise

Deltarune chapter 1 is my personal favourite selection
I like legend, empty town, fields of hopes and dreams, lantern and scarlet forest.
From chapter 2 my castle town. By far the best theme from chapter 2 its awesome. I also quite like girl next door and attack of the killer queen and pandora palace.
But not as much as my favourites from the other games.
My favourite undertale songs are core and another medium.
I also like waterful, snowdin town, asgore and stonger monsters.

Most important song of Chapter 1 was missed. It is called Don't Forget, and it acts as leitmotif for most of songs.
Love delta rune ost but now that I've sat down and really heard them You can always come home reminds me of traverse from kingdom hearts and scarlet forest reminds me of Alice and wounder land from kingdom hearts mostly comes down to the feel of the song and Instrument choice rather than them being Similar
