    What they are suggesting Madness are linked to neo nazis, that's down to the ignorance of the Mojo people. Skinheads were a multi racial phenomenon. They didn't crossover because so much of what they did was based on British culture and references.

    • @bjhellstream
      @bjhellstream 2 роки тому

      Well, skinheads was nazi thugs at that time and not "multi racial". I saw them misbehave at a Sham 69 concert harassing blacks and making nazi salutes. Members of the band had racist views in their early days.

    • @leehallam9365
      @leehallam9365 2 роки тому +14

      @@bjhellstream I had a look into it after seeing your comment, and it seems to me there were two things going on. Skinhead music was derived from black music influences and was multi racial, the Specials were part of it, and they were a mixed race group. However neo nazi thugs with skinhead haircuts were definately a thing too, and in the seventies groups of such people did associate themselves with bands like Madness and even bizarrely the mixed race Specials. But that's not the same as saying the band associated with them, and certainly by the time of their success they were not. I don't think for a moment that it stopped them breaking the US. As for the racist views of some members in their youth. Well they were from a pretty rough working class background, and were hardly model citizens in their youth. It was a time when racist jokes were on TV, and things were routinely said and done by most people that would not stand up to much scrutiny today.

      @@bjhellstream you have no idea what you’re talking about, friend. You encountered nazis and thugs..not skinheads. And the Sham were NEVER EVER a racist band. Or had any members that were racist or affiliated with any such filth. You’ve never been in the subculture, apparently. The Sham were a notoriously ANTI racist band. And skinhead culture/subculture has ALWAYS been linked to Jamaica, racial unity and having fun.

    "Simple Minds" had a few big hits in the U.S. in the 80's, primarily "Don't You (Forget About Me)", but they were crazy popular in the U.K., and other parts of the world, in the 80's. I highly recommend checking out some of their songs like "Love Song", "The American", "Someone, Somewhere in Summertime", "Promised You a Miracle", "Waterfront", etc.. They sold 60 million albums worldwide. Also, another similar band from the 80's, that had little success in the U.S. versus the world, is "Ultravox". You reacted to their song "Vienna", which never even charted in the U.S., but reached #2 in the U.K., and have a ton of songs that were top 20 hits in the U.K. Finally, "Split Enz"/"Crowded House" are band(s) that had a little success in the U.S., but nothing compared to how popular they were in Australia and the U.K..

    Happy Mondays' "Kinky Afro" is how I found them while I was listening to some song suggestions on Spotify and that's how I began to listen to their discography.
    Also Stone Roses are amazing. In fact, two of the guys from the band had a chance to meet The Clash while the punk band was in Manchester.

    Also -- not a band, but a solo artist (for the most part) -- Cliff Richard was a HUGE success in the UK, but only had a few hits in the US. Overseas, though, he had 14 singles reach #1, 68 which were top 10 hits, and overall, 124 songs in the UK top 40, spanning 5 decades.

    T Rex should definitely be on there, Marc Bolan was years ahead of his time and was a huge influence on future artists. Also Status Quo and Slade. Slade were very underrated as a great rhythm & blues band, probably because they were classed as glam rock, but were one of the influences for Oasis, as acknowledged by Noel Gallagher, and alot of AC/DC tracks remind me very much of Slade.

    A track from each group in the list to try out:
    10 - Supergrass - "Alright"
    09 - Madness - "It must be love"
    08 - Take That - "Back for good" (their "boy band" style isn't my cup of tea, but this track was great).
    07 - Kasabian - "L.S.F."
    06 - Happy Mondays - "Step on"
    05 - Stereophonics - "Local boy in the photograph" (most people would probably suggest "Dakota" though)
    04 - Manic Street Preachers - "A design for life"
    03 - Pulp - "Common people"
    02 - The Jam - "Going underground"
    01 - The Stone Roses - "Waterfall" (probably not the most popular suggestion)
    Honourable mentions:
    Suede - "Animal nitrate"
    Maximo Park - "Our velocity"

    I'd definitely give The Stereophonics a listen too. My favourite is Handbags and Gladrags..not written by lead singer Kelly Jones this is a cover but was a mega hit over here🇬🇧.. his raspy voice is epic and any song on their ablum Just enough education to perform you will love..Take That was epic here too..initially a pop boy band..Gary Barlow lead singer and songwriter is very talented..he had a continual disagreement with Robbie Williams and Williams left. Take That broke up a yr after..However they got back to together a few yrs back now and are bigger than ever.. Back for Good..Never Forget..A million love songs from their boy band time..Patience..Let it Shine. .and a lot more hits that are very recent.. i wouldn't bother with some of those that were in the top ten. I would add The Beautiful South into that list..Perfect 10.. Dignity..Take a little time and many more.. also Level 42..very big in the 80's.. similar status to tears for fears .. wrote their own music... very catchy tunes great lead singer in Mark King and one of the other band members had a fantastic falsetto..can't remember his name right now ..enjoy

    Some great bands in there but Stereophonics are my favourites of those. I've been to see them twice in my hometown of Wrexham twice and were absolutely awesome both times. The first of which was the day after Wales beat Belgium at Euro 2016 which added to the atmosphere even more. So many banging tunes by them you should check out: Dakota, You're My Star, A Thousand Trees, Local Boy In the Photograph, The Bartender and the Thief, Pick a Part That's New, Just Looking, I Wouldn't Believe Your Radio, Have a Nice Day, Mr Writer, Maybe Tomorrow, Since I Told You It's Over, Devil, Handbags and Gladrags, It Means Nothing, Could You Be the One?, Graffiti On the Train. I could name more but those are the essentials.
    I grew up on 90s Britpop bands such as Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Space and Supergrass. If you look for a 90s Britpop playlist on UA-cam, you'll find lots of catchy feel-good tunes which gives a lot of nostalgia and good memories to British millenials growing up at that time.
