Classic Game Room reviews MACROSS for Nintendo Famicom from 1985 by Namco, the video game based on the classic, original Japanese anime that would later be dubbed in. Fly your transforming Valkyrie (Veritech Fighter) against waves of Zentradi in this sadly disappointing, and repetitive side scrolling space ship shooter. Fans of Macross / Robotech should enjoy the good looking visuals and transforming jet, but the game play doesn't live up to it. Even the repeating MACAROOSSSS theme song can't save it and eventually becomes irritating. Super Dimension Fortress Macross on Nintendo Family Computer is one to avoid, even at the game's budget price. Now its stuck in my head
MACAROONS! MACAROONS!
+uSCOTTpwnd
hahahaha
+uSCOTTpwnd with CHEESE!...with CHEE-ESE!...
sounds like a meme soundtrack
chacaron macaron
That's not the Macross theme, that's Shao Pai Long
"That was for Lisa" made my morning just a bit brighter. thanks Mark!
+Fernando Ramos Her name is Misa. Lisa is a fake name
+2011Tatin Your purist tears just made my afternoon brighter, five months later.
I know about the differences, but I genuinely prefer the Robotech narrative and it's greater focus on the sci-fi aspect of things to Macross' (First and Plus aside) tendency to go towards pop singer space opera. Too bad the Robotech narrative, Frankenstein that it is, never received a proper ending on the screen.
"It doesn't go anywhere, like a second date with Minmay" :')
I remember playing this repetitive game back in the day. Also I'm a Lisa fan, danm you Minmey!!
Pretty sure that music they used in this game is an 8-bit rendition of Shao Pai Long... for some reason. Of all the songs from Macross, what a weird choice for an action game.
+Doctalen Heh, fair enough.
product Nine Well it was based on the event in the series when Lynn Minmay sing this song to all pilots in the battlefield (and the enemy frequency as well) that caused a huge victory for human beings. There's also the part where the enemies were shocked with the song because it was considered a deculture (Macross backstory is a bit too complicated)
Mark's singing while playing Macross = Epic win.
Haha. You do the funniest game reviews on the 'net man. Anything with Lord Karnage on it, is a must-watch for me.
Macaroos! Macaroos! Fighting for the future!
Yay the new intros back :D lord karnage i missed you XD
I believe that the music is called "Shao Pai Long" that Minmay was singing in her concert.
This game was included in almost all the bootleg famiclone cartridges i remember fondly because back in the day i had to make my own lyrics to Shao Pai Long.
Wesley Willis would've been proud of your vocal styling on this one:-)
Had this as a kid and I couldn't understand why I wouldn't get past the first level, I kept thinking I was doing something wrong but as it turned out the game only had one friggin level.
There was also an exploit a friend of mine discovered where if you positioned yourself just right in one spot you could go through the entire level without getting hit or the majority of it I don't remember anymore.
Wow, I remember this game! I must have been 3 years old the last time I played it. Thanks for the flashback.
Surprised how Lord Karnage loves him his Robotech/Macross.
I also have kinda fond memories of this game but I still find it weird that it's bundled with 3 light gun shooters in the cartridge I got way way back.
this is one of the first games I had for the Famicom, back in the 80s... actually a few of your recent ones are as well (Exerion, Tennis, DK)
A lot of people know this game from the famiclones and various NES multicarts. I myself was included, when I knew this game when I was about 5 or 6 years old, but didn't remember the name anymore until two years ago.
a great game that I really enjoyed playing way back on the N.E.S.
"TO START PUSH" LMAO
Hey Mark have you ever picked up any of the Yamato/Arcadia VF-1 Valkyries toys?
the bgm for this game always got stuck in my head. I had it on a bootleg copy for my nes
The Saturn game is pretty good as is Macross 2036 on the PC Engine, I'd recommend them both.
yep, I like the Saturn game too. it's a short play through, but fun with great cut scenes and graphics.
Definitely interested in your take on the Saturn game. It's totally different and a lot of fun.
Mark's is the only reviewer I watch with lotion and a towel nearby.
which harmony gold dvd set should i buy that has mark's song as the intro?
the theme is not the main theme, its one of minmei's songs "SHAO PI LON" OR LITTLE WHITE DRAGON
White Dragon?! Damn...
Heh, just picked this up yesterday at a game show with 8 other Famicom games ($5 each). Just cleaned them (talk about FILTHY contacts...) and will be spending part of my Sunday trying them all out.
Mark is a pilot now....he's a pilot nooooooowwwww!
Did you not transform to robot mode in the video at all?
Mark, now you need to review Zeta Gundam Hot Scramble for the Famicom.
DYRL for the Saturn is Beautiful just so you know you have something to look forward to albeit its a bit easy though.
Did you know Laserdisc was originally called and marketed as discovision?
You have to review Macross M3 for the Sega Dreamcast if you can.
AWESOME
I remember playing this in a 64-in-1 cartridge. Good times.
I like this Macaroni BGM remix.
Why are the power-ups Colonel Sanders' head?
MAC UHHH ROOOONNNSSS
Do you remember love on the Sega Saturn was my favorite. 2 discs of awesome!!
IT'S A MUST HAVE BECAUSE IT'S MACROSS
AND NO COLLECTION IS COMPLETE WITHOUT IT
Fun fact I picked up from Happy Console Gamer: Brian Cranston (Hal on "Malcolm in the Middle" and Walter White on "Breaking Bad") played the lead in the English version of "Macross Plus".
Isn't that crazy? It'd be like finding out that the guy who plays Tyrion Lannister was also that pissed off midget in "Elf", or that Mark Hamill has been voicing The Joker on and off for the last 23 years.... oh, wait...
also Mark Hamill is the voice of Skeleton King in Super Robot Monkey team Hyperforce go (if you've ever watched it, if not I recommend it)
+SamPearce8 I remember it, it was okay.
The song of the stages is My boyfriend is a pilot.
DYRL is awesome on the Saturn.. I have it for PSX and the Saturn of course I prefer Saturn version. Its a short game though difficulty isn't that hard. But the music is awesome and the graphics rock
This doesn't look too bad, don't know why people don't like Macross games.
There are a couple of good ones on MSX as well.
I think you missed your calling as a lounge singer
anyone who has seen macross will immediately recognize what song is being played in this game..
i played this alot
I got this game.
"Shao Bai Long" is the name of the real title.
I have do you remember love? I love robotech/Macross.
Mark makes Derek plays this game for punishment.
Do you Remember Love in PSX is actually pretty good. Also the VFX games from Macross Plus
Great! :D
Super dimension fortress macross on the Saturn is also good
The first Famiom/NES game that I played in my life! '-'/
and if you want a good Robotech game get the Robotech battlecry set a Playstation 2 or Xbox
Macaroni with a spoon!!! with a spoon!!! 🍴🍝
Thanks Mark. I now have the theme song stuck in my head now, on repeat. To get back at you, I put my copy of Truxton in the corner, cover towards the corner, all by its lonesome. You did this to Truxton!
MACAROOS MACAROOS ...new pop hit by CGR
"MACK-A-ROOS!" LMAO
MAAACAAAROOOOOOOSSS
Macaroons!!!
Seems like Famicom is making a fami-COME back ;)
Shao Pai Long is the song used for the game's main theme
play Robotech - The Macross Saga for the GBA next! Its a much better game imo.
+Marianne Starr To be fair, it was made almost 20 years later for a 16 bit handheld ^^;
+FalconKPD *32 bit (pff cretin)
I certainly couldn't tell by the game's shit chibi graphics.
Poo Gold before they made Robotech actually released some of their own dub of real Macross as well. I call them Poo Gold because their voice acting was sub par and all their releases in late 1985 when stereo became the default format to release VHS was is appalling as they still brought things out in Mono at the start of Stereo era. Robotech does have protential but the Poo Gold making it thing makes me wonder if it is ggoing to be good or not so I held mayself from watching full episodes on UA-cam because my gut feelings are the voice dubbings are going to be rubbish and the audio is goign to be Mono or watery remasters into Stereo from Mono.
+Daniel Cordell Yeah, it's basiclly Poo Gold stopping me from watching it.
PSA: Mark's official rendition of the Macross soundtrack is now available on CD, cassette and vinyl. The VHS tape of the live tour featuring a surprise on-stage duet with Mark and Minmay is due out in time for Christmas. Order yours now!
macaroons. macaroons. I too dig lisa :D
So there's only one stage you play over and over again? Wow, what a disappointment. Thanks for taking this bullet for us Mark.
Wow
great singing, mark! i wanna put this on spotify or something...
First time I've ever disagreed with +LordKarnage. I felt the same way about the PS2 version that you're describing the famicon version. Much like the PS2 Transformers games too. They were so repetitive, the levels looked good , but really went nowhere. I got bored within the first 15 minutes with all of them. I'm probably an equal or greater fanboy of Robotech/Transformers/Volotron as the rest of us here. Which made it all the more disappointing for me.
I seriously need the music, then crank it up for Macross Triangle Frontier. Oh, and with Mark's remix as well in loop. But i think that makes headache if i try it too.
I played this game on the MSX. One time it glitched and I became invincible. I managed to finish the game that way but it was a real slog getting there. Not a game to recommend.
Can anyone imagine if someone made a Macross/Robotech game now?!
Hmm... What's the name?
I meant on either last Gen(360,ps3) or currently Gen.
+thaneros Macross 30: Ginga wo tsunagu utagoe
The newest one we have now is Robotech Macross HD from the GBA on the Switch. I'm still not sure whether to go for that or not.
Shao Pai Long
Any plans to review any of the two VF-X games on Playstation?
who's singing macaroons lol.
Macarooooooos
I like this game. Too bad it's so short. What's the button to transform? I couldn't figure it out. =(
Kinda booted that one Mark, lol. Then again, I guess it's better than you singing SHAO PAI LONG! SHAO PAI LONG! over and over... :D
the super famicom one was sexy

GREATEST REVIEW EVER11
Why is this game not awesome
Cash grab title maybe?
I sense a CGR album coming soon...
Macross more like skyfire
LOOOOL XD
Macross is just like most other nes games from 1985 just a boring repetitive game, it doesn't feel like you go anywhere except increasing you high score, but yeah in 1985 you|| just cutn't ask for more, the nes has just to raise up in the following years, and expension chip increased the capabilities of the nes and allowed larger games to be possible on the nes.
Please, don't sing on reviews... ever.
"That was for Lisa" made my morning just a bit brighter. thanks Mark!
