It all depends on the length of the shoelaces you're replacing. In my case the worn out shoelaces for my boots were about 115cm/45" so I worked the stitches and held the cord against the worn out laces until they matched.

That is a great question! Maybe with a pretty tape like washi tape or a more sturdy tape like electrical tape?
