I appreciate that this is a lesson on UNDERSTANDING trees, because so many drawing tutorials will just be like "copy how I draw a tree" but you don't necessarily learn from those. this is so very helpful
I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your videos on drawing, the first few especially ("How to draw #1" etc.). I'm 36 years old, I haven't dared trying to sketch and draw since I was a child. I've always had a tortured relationship with artistic expression of any kind, and your spot on, slow, and gentle approach has helped me take courage. Thank you for that.
I always wanted to draw but did not know how to do it. Yesterday (3-29-21) I found your channel and started to understand how to draw. I will be 63 years old in two weeks and for the first time feel good about drawing something. You have been a blessing. I have tears in my eyes writing this comment. You are so patient. You explain things so clearly and calmly. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Greetings from NYC.
Lol, I can't believe I've always made the "fan" mistake! Yes, trees are 3 dimensional so branches don't just go up or sideways. And that's why I love your videos. You point out "obvious" things that beginners can totally miss. Thanks again for the help.
For years I've been horrible at drawing trees. They look simple to draw but whoever I attempted my drawings were just way off. Something was missing. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much! I was just sitting in my room and had the idea to start learning how to draw. I propably didnt draw something in since my childhood . I just watched your video and i was so fascinated how you just put the pencil on the paper and made such an amazing tree. I really was in the flow with the pencil and the paper. It was the first time I decided to just draw a tree for myself without anyone wanting me to do it. I always thought i was horrible at drawing. I did draw for over an hour and i am so amazed by the results of my first tree. I will keep learning how to draw as ahobby for myself. A big thank you. This video were my inspiration to finally start learning to draw. I will keep this hobby up hopefully for my lifetime. Thanks to you
I love your videos. This one specially! I never thought of that sphere thing while drawing trees, I always thought of them as fans. Also I never thought that the main trunk is tapering off.. I always just "end" it midway awkwardly and have branches come out of it. Absolutely wonderful how you break things down for us. Thanks!!
Haha much appreciated! Yeah man trees are tough, especially if they're just branches and no leaves. But really either way they can be tough. I need to do more videos on them.
I came across this video -I’m trying to improve my watercolor skills. As a older person exploring a hobby and completely self taught - due to to life. I realized you have to learn how to draw and sketch. This was an excellent tutorial. Perfect in detail and the rectangle was amazing. Really helpful to take watercolor to the next level.

I'm honestly amazed. You just taught a thirteen year old girl to draw a tree. And I NEVER had a better instruction video ON ANYTHING WITH ART that was so clear to me. ( I have been sketching for a little longer than a year now ). Just.... Respect. I always had trouble doing this and it is absolutely amazing that an adult can explain a thirteen year old girl ( THAT ISN"T EVEN ENGLISH ) how to draw a tree. I am definitely checking out your account and im definitely great full for this video. I really hope to become an animator or an (manga) artist in the future. Hey I know I’m late to the party but I just wanted to thank you 🙏, I’ve been practicing backgrounds and one thing I really struggled with was trees. I’m so happy with what I’ve learned you have really made my day thanks

Very nice video. I can tell you respect trees. I love trees. The first one you drew I thought that tree has personality. And then you mention that they all have individual personalities. It's good to hear from others who appreciate trees, there is 3 dimensional aspect to drawing them. Now that it's winter here, I can take advantage that they have leaves on and see them up and close and really see their branches. Thank you for a pleasantly informative video about drawing trees. I'm going to be more aware of their shapes as I hug them!
Oh my gosh, I just want to say thank youuuuu, your video helped me a lot. I've been having a hard time sketching trees, I tried watching videos but out of all of them yours was the besttttttt. THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤❤❤❤

There was a drawing i thought of that had smth to do with a forest and i literally couldnt get any of the trees right but this really helped! Now they actually look like trees i mean theyre arent great but its a start tysm!
Really good video Schaef! If you get time could do you a cloud lesson? I'm struggling with colours, shading and highlights and really need a method to follow that works. Thanks for the videos and interaction with viewers. Keep up the awesome work! Andy.
I could possibly do that. Yesterday would have been perfect for me to get some good photos of clouds, now it's sunny and clear today lol. Clouds are definitely tough.

There was useful information in here I won't deny that, but it felt a little redundant after the first 3 or 4 minutes, and you really down played the real problem with drawing trees, leaves , if I avoid evergreens I can draw all the trees I want in the fall and winter, I can observe bare branches and make sense of them, leaves are the amorphous mass that people struggle with.
I respect your comment as your own experience, and the way your brain processes seeing and drawing coordination, but it's actually just about the opposite of mine. A leaf canopy for me always ends up being a cover for the cartoon tree underneath. This was very helpful, especially the observations about the 3-D reality of branches projecting in all directions.
