Painting a Cretaceous Dinosaur Forest at Western Science Center

  • I had the honor of being the lead artist for the Western Science Center's new exhibit displaying the fossils they've been uncovering from the Late #Cretaceous #MenefeeFormation of #NewMexico. In this video, I'll show you the process of painting a large paleoecology mural featured in the exhibit. With indoor house paint and a lot of fossil reference we built a forest full of dinosaurs and prehistoric plants one layer at a time. All of the plants and animals depicted in this mural are based on the latest research on late Cretaceous ecosystems of North America including newly discovered plant and animal #fossils, many of which are on display in the new exhibit. You can also catch a glimpse of the life sized head #sculpture we created of the #tyrannosaur #Dynamoterror, which will be the focus of my next video. Other #dinosaurs included in the #mural are #Ornatops, #Invictarx. The mural also features prehistoric #turtles, #pterosaurs, and lots of #plants including, #ferns, #aroids, #palms, and ancient #conifers similar to modern #Cryptomeria, an ancient relative of #redwoods.

Big thanks to Thuat Tran and Jeremy Owen who helped me with a TON of the painting process. Also shoutouts are due to the Western Science Center's amazing staff, especially Darla Radford, Brittney Stoneburg, Charlotte Hohman, and Brett Dooley who all helped put paint on the wall.

It's not often you see artists including the mistakes/things they aren't happy with in their vids. It makes the process a lot more interesting. Regardless, excellent ending result. I'm looking forward to that Dynamoterror head sculpt!

That mural is breathtaking - so lush and also with that air of mystery that makes you want to explore it. I get a real strong Douglas Henderson vibe from it. The thing he does so well is not just focus on the animals, but to bring the world they lived in to life and give it character as well.
Of all the amazing modern paleoartists out there (and there are a ton), yours is the work that I feel most consistently keeps the focus on the world in addition to the animals. I think you're most well-known for your speculative soft-tissue reconstructions. But for me, this holistic focus on both world and animal is what makes you really stand out.
Also, as amazing as the mural is, the most exciting part of this vid is getting to hear more of your Mesozoic music! I really hope an album is released some day!

Some of those tinier details will go on to never be noticed and fully appreciated by the great majority of people in that mural's immensity and yet you guys still put in the maximum amount of effort and cut no corners. That's determination on a level deserving of all the praise and respect.

Thuat and Jeremy are my friends and I gladly accepted help from any of the Western Science Center staff who wanted to help put paint on the wall. The key is having a good paint plan and mixing the colors well (and testing them in the exhibit lighting) so that almost anyone can help "paint by numbers" (aka fill in figures sketched on the wall). If the color plan is solid and paints are mixed well, it is the final detail pass that adds realism and sells the sense of depth.

What type of paint are using for a mural of this size?

    • @DinosaursReanimated

Interior latex house paint. It's cheap, lasts a long long time, and comes in a zillion vibrant colors.
