    Davie, I do have a question: why the bleeding hell would a sleazy client ask an accountant to "cook the books" for them? I've taken very basic accounting and learned quickly that it would take a bit of ingenuity to hide sleazy activities such as skimming $200 every two months off a budget of $10,000. It will STILL show up as a discrepancy. In fact, the teacher did teach us a few ways to catch this act so we can find out if a company or client is lying! She was so strict about it that let's say we write down on the ledger that the client has $10,000 in assets and spent $5,000 on equipment, salaries, taxes and travel expenses and we somehow wound up with $4,900 after deducting everything. Then we were told to always always write +/-$100 in the corner of the ledger so we remember that something is very wrong. Then we were told to go back and point it out and ask very clearly "Where is that $100?"

      There comes a point in life we have to decide what type of accountant we wanna be.
      One of mentors told me that you either become an accountant that follows orders or an accountant that is a trusted adviser. Just follow what you believe is right and you will attract the right clients.
      From experience, in every industry there are bad eggs and good eggs. It’s not worth the time dealing with clients that don’t appreciate your work. Hope that helps !

    • @pteppig
      @pteppig 2 роки тому +4

      Hes actually "uncooking" the books for cartels etc, as an auditor, that finds embezzlement inside the organization.
      The can really let a "normal" accountant look deeply into their operations, business units and revenue streams.
      Since some organized crime "gives back" to the community for different reasons, this could start as a financially struggling but intelligent student, that they help pay for education, that later could be used as a loyal contractor that otherwise deals with 70% legal business.
      F.e. a business that owes "protection fees" could legally hire him as an overpriced accountant, and pay part of the organization compensation too.
      Basically tax deductible payments to the mob. Similar to "carpet cleaning" services that are hired, despite charging 30-40% over market avg and have high extra fees for a "rush job".

  • @rsutton7237
    @rsutton7237 Рік тому +1

    I've been a CPA for quite a while and found the "home based business" scene a bit lacking. First, in the US it's called a "home office" for taxes. Overclaiming your office space could trigger an audit - 300 square feet for a casual business? I've never seen anyone use more than 150 sq ft exclusively for business. Can't claim an entire dining room or bedroom, only the business area. Plus garage storage space if any. You also must claim depreciation on the business space. Next, you can't claim home office if you don't have a true profit motive. If you just sell a few items during the year, it's probably a hobby and even if you have income, you can't deduct a net loss. Then under US tax law, you can claim an alternative method of $5 a sq ft instead of prorating actual expenses. Finally, the truck, big issue. You can not claim a vehicle as an asset or its costs unless it's used over 50% for the business. You then have to use the actual percentage against the costs. Otherwise you must keep a business mileage log and claim the standard mileage rate only,

      That helped me significantly.

      @DavieMach  3 роки тому

      Definitely don’t agree with this. During this pandemic we have been growing fast due to the amount of advice required for small businesses. @@DavieMach Yes. Of course everything will not be driven by AI as someone has to understand the numbers present the numbers in an understandble way and create models (although accountants don't do that). And i guess some businesses will use human capital in the foreseeable future as well.
      But all else equal the presence of AI will decrease the number of required accounting experts and change the working environment and tasks. It will be interesting to follow from an outside perspective :)
