In this DIY video I’m going to show you how you can easily build your own heavy duty 2x4 free standing shelves all by yourself.
I’m gonna show you the easiest way to build your own 2’ x 4’ shelving. I’m gonna break it down and explain and show you exactly how to put it together step-by-step along with everything you need to do it.
You can build a shelf in any configuration you want. You can have as many or as little shells as you want and whatever spacing you want in between them. It all gets put together the same way.
The materials you’re going to need is...
16 - 8 foot long two by fours
2 - 8‘ x 4‘ by half-inch sheets of plywood
2 - 1 pound boxes of 3 inch number eight drywall screws
1 - box of Brad nails
Once you get the wood and you’re going to have to either cut it yourself or have the store cut it for you.
8 - of the 8’ 2x4’s will stay full length
Then cut up the other 2x4’s so you have a total of... 4 - 6’ long 2x4’s and 20 - 21” long 2x4’s. The will be some scraps left over.
Each piece of plywood is going to need to be cut in half horizontally so your left with a total of.... 4 - 2‘ x 8‘ 1/2” pieces of plywood. Then 3 of those 4 pieces of plywood will have to have the corners notched 3”x5” as shown in the video @ 1:41.
NEXT: just put it all together as shown in the video and enjoy!
If you' r using this description as a list of what you need. I also used (4) - clamps to hold up the shelves while installing them. And I used (4) - 3 wheel casters to for underneath the shelf to help me roll it around.
As far as tools go, you’re gonna need...
A drill, circular saw or jigsaw, hammer, tape measure, level, clamps, and maybe some alcohol. The alcohol part is a joke, kind of. Jk.

This is a great way to build a shelf! I am going to build this for my husband's large shed! This is exactly what I have been looking for! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you, that’s great to hear. Good luck with you and your husband shelves. Hope it works out well for you.
This was a great tutorial. I have been wanting to do this and have been nervous to do it by myself. Even though I’m good at doing stuff I still get anxious. I will be definitely be doing this in the pretty near future! Thank you!
That’s great to hear! Thank you, and you’re welcome! I actually had to rebuild these shelves and re-watched and followed along to my own video. So I get it lol. Good luck with it.
Great video! Built these in my garage, followed the video and they are amazing shelves thank you so much!!
That’s so great to hear! Your very welcome, I’m glad it was able to help you out!!!
Thanks bro 💪
You’re welcome, I appreciate it man 👊
SUPER GREAT JOB IN EXPLAINING EVERY DETAIL OF THE PROJEST. YOU ARE THE BEST I HAVE SEEN GOD BLESS YOU.
Awesome! I tried to make it as easy to understand, but still cover everything. So thank you, I really appreciate that!!! And God bless you as well
Great video. I like the way you built the shelves. Easy to adjust if required.
Thanks!!! I really appreciate that!!! I made them to be easily adjusted, as well as easily disassembled and reassembled.
l’m actually working on a follow up video right now that shows how to adjust them, as well as how to completely disassemble and reassemble them in case they need to be moved in or out of a basement or somewhere they wouldn’t fit assembled.
Thank you! Amazing!
Your welcome!!! They really are nice & easy shelves.
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment
I would build the shelf frames and put them in place before adding the plywood to each. No need to break your back lifting the weight of an intact shelf.
That’s a good idea! I originally thought it would be easier to put the plywood on from the ground, but it did make them unnecessarily heavy and difficult to lift up and in place. Thanks for the tip!
Great video
Thanks!!! I appreciate that
Hi Brandonstunt !
I had a plan to build my garage shelf l have been watching so many demo how to build your is Easy Straight forward. Athough l have some reservations on the dry wall screws. (Whether it's a choice or cost wise l don't get it.)
Yours the " BEST. "
Awesome! Easy and straight forward was what I was going for. I’m glad to hear you like it and think it was the best!!!!!
As far as the drywall screws go, for the few other shelves I built since this video I used a nail gun for all the framing and just used drywall screws in each corner to hang the actual shelves because I knew I was moving soon and I would need to disassemble them.
dude, awesome simple plan thanks! I think I'll leave the bottom shelf off so I can slide totes in and out easily or roll a welder under there or something and i'll put some gussets in the back corners or bracing so it doesn't wobble when I move it. I can always come up with mods for things but I always struggle with how to actually get started or do a basic design. Thanks again!
Hey man, Thanks so much!!! And you’re welcome! I’m really happy to hear that you liked it and that it helped you out.
Those are some pretty good ideas. I think if you build these shelves you’d really enjoy them. I have 3 of them in my basement as well. They work out really good for any kind of storage because they can be built into any shelf configuration and they only require a low technical skill level to build.
My friend and I actually came up with the design together. We were looking at a bunch of google 2x4 shelf images and some shelf builds online. Then we started brainstorming and drawing ideas, and arguing a little bit lol… and at the end this is what we came up with.
Watch part 2 to see how to disassemble, reassemble, and change shelf position.

DO NOT USE DRYWALL SCREWS. Use structural screws, nails or lag screws. Drywall screws are not designed to be load bearing, they're designed to attach drywall to studs.
Thank you, thats good to know. I wasn’t even thinking about the shear strength of the screws when doing it, but believe it or not I’ve had these shelves holding a lot of weight. One shelf with multiple Harley Davison motors plus lots of other heavy bike parts, as well as another shelf was filled with stacks of truck rotors with no issues, but it does makes sense when you think about it.
I wonder why they’re available in almost every standard screw length increment from 1/2” to 4”? There can’t be too many practical drywall applications for drywall on the far sides of that spectrum.
Thanks for the tips though. I actually have a few of the shelves broken down and stacked up in a pile from moving that I need to re-put back together. The drywall screws are cheaper, but I may look into some other fastener options now that you brought this to my attention.
How can I add wheels to the bottom?
Here’s a link in the comment below to the rollers, but here’s the video I show the rollers I used in. I show how I put them on and use them at the bottom of the shelves at 3:00 minutes into this video m.ua-cam.com/video/aenhLPR7MeY/v-deo.html&pp=ygUqSG93IHRvIGRpc2Fzc2VtYmxlIHJlYXNzZW1ibGUgIDJ4NCBzaGVsdmVz
I’ll link a bunch of different options of what I think we’re the best rollers in the next, but it really depends on what kind of rollers you’re looking for. If you’re going to be putting a lot of weight on your shelves, then I’d recommend going for heavier duty rollers. I’ve used the tri-rollers successfully, but had minimal weight on the shelves.
Tri rollers to move the shelves around (they can hold 75 pounds each), 600 lbs total, but remember that’s including shelving material and storage material on the shelves amzn.to/42KrE7F

This time I will do it manually with the help of woodglut designs.
