i like the sound these Ruud/Rheem units make when they defrost.

These defrost boards seem to fail quite often. I replace many. I wish they made a special sensor that just was wired across one leg of the 24 v connection to the contactor that was a manual reset that would cut off u it if too much frost startedcto accumulate on the outdoor coil, this way it dont turn into an ice cube. They make them for the evsporator side. I wish they would come up with a mechanical defrost timer may be more reliable then a circuit board.

The 2 sensors on the board, one is for checking if the ice is build up and trigger a defrost and the other is for?
    Thanks for the help

Modern reverse cycle systems will take both ambient air temp and coil temp, and do a comparison between the two. It only goes into defrost when the coil temp is far enough below ambient. It's called a smart defrost.

@@tomtom1541 would it freeze up like that if unit is low on charge as well being that the ambient temp is not to low

@@edwardgarza5104 maybe, but if that happens the unit should start defrosting more often than usual to try and offset the ice buildup.

@@edwardgarza5104 The frost would not be uniform due to low charge.

But what if it was the reversing valve? You didn’t check tht b4 u went and got the broad and sensor

Why didn't you check the individual sensors to make sure they weren't failing.. might of been cheaper then replacing the board

More labour time = more cost.
In 3rd world countries, where labour is cheap, you can have your technician diagnose the board for a couple of days.
Now try that in the US ... You're better off replacing the whole unit twice.

What's your steps on charging a heat pump in middle of freezing temperatures?

Run the system in AC then you’d have to buy what they call a charging blanket to block off airflow to the condenser increasing pressures and charge through the low side to target *depending on metering device either super heat or sub cool*
