    I finally got around to reading Richardson's behemoth last year. I thought it would be a long and tedious marathon, but I was captivated. It's easily one of the greatest novels ever written, right up there with _War and Peace,_ _Moby Dick,_ _Ulysses,_ etc.

      Congrats on finishing Clarissa as well! It really does feel like a huge achievement, doesn't it???
      I agree, it was the most incredible novel I've ever read (I'm new to classics so far) and I just thought it was brilliantly told. I can't go over how well he wrote the inner thoughts of these characters. I finished it in August or September and I'm still thinking about it. War and Peace, Moby Dick and Ulysses are on my list to read as well. Thank you for watching and letting me know you also read this book! :)

    First of all, I'm beyond impressed that you managed to blog this over YEARS! That is dedication! You did make me almost want to read this--but I think I'm taking at least a year off from doorstoppers after re-reading Les Misérables this year.

      I don't blame you for taking a break from another huge book. Clarissa was so good, but hard for me to read a lot of at once (hence why it took me so long to read it) :) I would love to read Les Misérables some day, but I'm afaid that would take me another 3 years as well :D

    Very impressed. That is a loooong book, and in letter form... It takes a while to get accustomed I guess. You can't fly through it because you have to keep track of who's writing. Bravo! Adorable niece. ❤

      Thanks Martine! Yes, I think it took me so long because I had to keep stopping as some of the letters were so tedious to get through and it was hard for me to read a lot at once. The good thing was that it was easy to take a month off and start back up because the plot was so slow! :)

    Congrats Farrah!!! Wooo! That's quite the accomplishment to knock out that chunkster. I don't think I could stick with the same book for that long or not get confused even with notes taking so long to get through it with other books in between. I can't do one with such bad characters. When the main ones are jerks it just puts me in a bad mood. Yay for new vocabulary. That is a fun aspect of reading. I've been amused by some of the new words/spellings I've come across reading UK authors. Good luck making it to book 1! Happy reading! 😁

    • @bookstalgic
      @bookstalgic  Місяць тому +2

      Thanks Kat, I did it! Hahaha, it really did take me forever, but I blame it only on being distracted by mood reading from everyone else's videos. There were long, slow parts to get through where it felt like she was going back and forth with her parents about the arranged marriage for what seemed like FOREVER and the same when she was going back and forth with Robert Lovelace about his advances towards her. It ended up captivating me though, and once I got to a certain point, I knew I had to keep going until the end.
      Yeah, he was a scheming, conniving psycho, wrapped up in a handsome, charming package. He was a great villian and you would've hated him, hahah.
      New vocabulary is always a plus, and I was stunned by how many new words I came across (I looked them up and screenshot them on my phone to save them lol).
      Thank you again and hope you're having a great weekend so far! :)

    You certainly don't have to apologize for your "critiquing" skills:) I think you covered everything, from an analysis of the letters from different people, to how the characters were portrayed and their relationships to each other. That is what literary criticism is about.
    If you'd like to see an excellent production of Clarissa, I can heartily recommend the 1991 BBC series. I found a copy of the DVD at the library . I was so impressed with it that I had to purchase a copy. Now, I've never read the novel, but I do know the history of it and what it was about. It would be interesting to hear your opinion of the production from the point of view of having read the book.
