I don't get the argument about the last group games of Euro 2024 being dull when that was only true for 2 out of the 6 groups. The new CL format is certainly worse for players and was obviously created with money in mind more than anything (which is nothing to be surprised about tbh), but as a spectator I'm willing to give it a shot and see how it actually ends up playing out in practice
Georgia VS Portugal and Turkey VS Czechia unironically turned out to be the most insane two matches for the entire group stage tbh. Especially with them resulting in the Netherlands being slotted with Romania instead of on the tougher branch.

Smaller teams get to face more better teams as they are guaranteed from pot 1 and 2 and they can possibly edge out just to get into the knockout and might give them chance to play another big team again. Big teams also need to play harder games instead of only facing one decent team while getting another two random team in their group.
Tbh I'm not to sure about the Entertainment. I'm worried that the format might tire out players even more which could make the quality of football suffer. The players are already noticeable fatigued at the end of the season and injuries seem to increase.
while kinda true, im also tired of this excuse by big clubs. this is only a real problem for big clubs who get deep into competitions, thus playing more matches. those same clubs have more than enough money to afford quality rotation options in their squads. rest your fucking players. rotate your team. arsenal has no excuse to be playing players like saka and rice for 50+ matches a season, it's ridiculous.
One positive point in this system is the added value to the other UEFA competitions. Now there will be no relegations to Europa League or Conference League. More, the lower relevance clubs, from smaller countries, will have a new space in European Football. I agree to the point that this is made for the big ones, but the smaller ones will benefit from this as well...

i actually love it. people have gotten used to it, but the group stage in the old format really sucks. with the exception of the one group of death every year, for the vast majority of groups you know who's going through before it starts, and half the matches played don't matter. now every match matters and teams have an incentive to win every game to get better seeding or not go through an extra knockout stage. it's good for both small and big teams. it's not good for players because it's more matches in an already crammed schedule, but as the most important club competition. i think it should take precedence over stuff like the efl cups or the endless summer friendlies they keep playing for some reason.
please make a video about the often ignored Welsh premier league. it doesn't get taken very seriously but the champions just qualified for the Europa conference
First of all, i love your channel. Second, considering football is one of the few ways the working class people unwind after hard days and weeks of school, work and our businesses (I'm doing all 3 of those), you'll be shocked at how popular this new format will end up being. I'm not going to lie, i was really looking forward to the super league. I thought for sure it was going to happen. So, basically, I'm saying that after a little while of groaning, people will absolutely fall in love with the new format.
Dude, What do U mean? If UEFA just NEVER did the new format, The Super League would literally exist right now. They had to save this competition in some possible way.
@@jakeezetciit does work with 32 teams. Just reduce the number of group stage matches from 8 to 6. You wouldn’t face any team from your very own pot you were drawn into until at least the KO playoffs. You would play 6 different teams, 3 at home and 3 away. 2 teams from each pot, except yours obviously
The old format was fine and it didnt need changing that was the main issue, the best thing about this format is that teams dont get a second chance of going in to the europa league which ive always disagreed with
I'm not gonna judge it right now, but things will be pretty clear after the first year. It might help, it might not. I like at least one thing, that teams eliminated from the champions league won't go into the europa league. That didn't make sense to me. Now, you have 24 teams in the "knockouts", which means, in the worst case scenario, 6 teams from the 3rd pot are gonna advance (9 eliminations from pot four and 3 from pot three), so, there is a chance for some underdog run. But yeah, the schedule is tight, there is a greater risk of injury, but, other than that... eh, we'll see.
6:04 people complain schedules but in England before 1999 there were replays and replays of replays and replays of replays of replays. Never mind Brazil with the 15 game paulistao/carioca a 2 legged Copa every round and a 38 game season and next year a World Cup for palmeiras, flamengo and fluminense
It's like all the CL teams play in 1 leauge and they just stop after round 8 and go to a knock out stage system based on how much points they have at that moment
Problem with that is drawing from the pots, but could probably be better. Like lower ranked pots only get 1 draw from pot 1 & 2. While pot 1 & 2 get like two draws from pot 1 & 2, but only one each from pot 3 & 4. That sounds a bit unfair to the bigger teams, but would maybe help with the disparity.
they missed an opportunity to rival Papa Perez's super league.... the point of a league system was to see real madrid play in a 10,000 capacity stadium. the best plays the worst round rubin.
I also hate the fact they literally said that now clubs can play against more clubs of the same skill level, but in previous years, you could get lucky and get a easy, or slightly easy group, but now you’re just 100% playing against at least 2 clubs who are way better and way higher ranked then your team
huh. i don't get it. you're still using a pot system, so you can still theoretically get an easier draw. it's just that if you get 2 good teams in your draw, you aren't immediately eliminated before the competition even starts.
@@crediblesalamander8056 the teams in the new system our ranked on how good they are, and you 100% of the time play against 2 teams from pot 1, the absolute best of the world, so yes it’s still random, but just less random then before, because in previous years you could draw against any team, but now it’s just, two teams of each pot, and you know exactly which teams those could be, when before, you could also get 0 teams from pot one, if I’m not making sense please excuse my bad English, or maybe I’m just not explaining it correctly
This might be a hot take, but i absolutely believe the format should’ve been changed earlier. The 32 team format wasnt bad, it just got outdated a little bit. And the fact that the gap between top 4 and the rest of teams got bigger more and more, didnt help us. I do think this is a daring format, and i wouldnt say is a bad one. But there’s the risk of many final matches being too boring. And i have to add something else. The “lower” teams need to grab at least 8-9 points to be in a race to go to top 24. Which i find hard. And having more matches to play means that bigger teams will be certainly qualified for the next round. Bcs even if they slip once, they have more chances to bounce back
I am willing to give it a chance, most group stage matches were boring these last couples of year's but I am concerned about how many games the players will have to play.
my favorite part about the new format - you can’t enter europa league and conference league by getting eliminated from the bigger tournament this definitely helps smaller clubs, you can’t have stupid repeats like sevilla did and you don’t have someone like barcelona coming and destroying everyone
I actually really like the format, because every big team now has to face at least another 2 big teams from the same pot, so we dont get to see city just making the first phase of the ucl their training matches the only thing i didnt like is the increased games played
The new UEFA Champions League format, inspired by the Swiss system used in both traditional sports like wrestling in Switzerland and eSports, is a huge improvement. Instead of the old group stage format, where teams could have easy or tough draws by luck, every team now plays 8 matches against different opponents. This ensures that each club faces a mix of stronger and weaker teams, giving a more accurate reflection of their performance over time. Mathematically, it's also fairer because the results from more diverse opponents reduce the luck factor, meaning the top teams that qualify for the knockout rounds are more likely to be the truly best performers. It’s like a filtering system-everyone gets tested more evenly, and you quickly see who’s strong and who’s struggling. In the long run, this format rewards consistency and makes the competition even more exciting for fans!
I'd argue the opposite: taking away the luck of the draw, having more teams progress and ensuring the opposition is more evenly spread means there are fewer surprizes, there is less jeopardy and there is almost no chance of a fairytale run narrative before the knockout stages (to stand out as such they'd need to finish top 8 rather than top 16). This means there is basically no reason to watch the group stages or whatever they're calling it now because there won't be a group with 3 strong teams of which one is guaranteed to get eliminated, and because there are more matches a shock result is less likely to impact the final standings. Instead all the best teams will be close to guaranteed to progress, so where's the need to even watch this stage? Less jeopardy means less excitement.
This format doesn't reward consistency and make the competition more exciting, quite the opposite. The two extra matches, combined with 2/3rds of all teams advancing past the league stage, makes the competition far more predictable as big teams now have to do even less in order to qualify. Realistically anyone who has between 9 and 10 points is guaranteed to advance, so all a team like has to do to advance is win only 3 matches with maybe 1 draw out of a total of 8 matches, meaning that realistically half the matches are going to be irrelevant for big teams, who, as the euroes prove, will not bother trying to finish top 8, and would much rather do the bare minimum require to advance so they can rest their players for more important games. In the old format, you at least had the ocassional upset from a pot 2 club or had a group of death, both of those things are now gone. All of that, while the increased amount of matches will also lead to teams employing less intense and more defensive tactics to make each match less intense for the players so that they don't get injured as often.
Pros: not closed or semiclosed like superleague proposal teams getting chance to play against teams from their pot(beneficial for teams that are much better than all teams in their pot) No transfer to europa league Every game matters Cons: Maybe too much games Additional 4 spots not given to lower leagues January games(for those leagues that have winter break)
Do the matches really matter more? Clearly the teams around the position 8 and 24 cutoff will have an incentive to play hard, but the one stuck in nowhere land between positions 11-20 will have basically nothing to play for in the later games. I fail to see how that's an improvement.
@@AutoAxpert Well, they won't be that far apart from 24th and 8th, remember that there are only 8 games. One bad game and you are on verge of being eliminated
@@makotonagano-i7q we will see, but I would be surprised if after game 5-6 there isn't a bunch of teams that have no realistic path into the top 8 and can do the bare minimum to reach the knockouts
A lot of people are overacting without even giving it a chance. There's now a lot more jeopardy, a higher chance of exciting matches, and more diverse teams while maintaining the integrity of qualification. We shouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water and resist change just because. Also, this is just a pet peeve; it was called the Champions "league" without actually being a league. At the very least, it fixed that. 😹
People are not overreacting to the format they have every right to be angry especially fan's of lower league teams there was no reason to change the format
as a villa fan, i honestly see this as being alot more favourable for smaller champions league clubs like ours. obviously we get the extra revenue from the 2 additional games, but we are garuanteed 4 away days, in 4 different locations across europe and since we play 8 teams instead of 3 theres a much smaller chance of us simply being thrown out because we got unlucky and drew with a handful of very difficult teams. plus theres alot more diverse and interesting matchups. i do understand why some people are annoyed, but i think its a good change for alot of smaller teams that would've struggled in the old format
For me as a psv fan, I really like the new format. 1 extra home game, more opponents. I don't think the group stage will get boring, considering that elite clubs want to get to the best 8, to skip the play off round. But I have to say, this is from a supporter perspective
What bothers me the most are the extra places for the two countries who's teams had the best collective results. Like why should the number five of a nation be in the UCL. I already thought 4 teams in the UCL from one country was a lot but 5 is just taking the piss.
The good thing for me is that now it's more fair in the sense that there won't be group of death, there will be still some harder and easier paths but more matches gives more room to mistakes and not being so luck-based
I agree with you. If you trying to force good matches you ganna end up with mid knock stages. Or us being burnt out as fans. Imo less teams more exclusivity would make something seem more valuable or important. Sadly I also prefer the super league. For me I want to seee 16 major teams. Relegation system of the bottom 2-4. tournament at the end for top 8 less games then champions league more high intensity.
6:10 Speaking about the schedule congestions, Real Madrid and Manchester City were the notable big clubs being heavily affected by this anomaly, at least this season. Real Madrid also have the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, which is basically a rebranded old Club World Cup, though they had to play in the Final against the playoff winners involving the other 5 FIFA confederations. Manchester City, on the other hand, still have FA Cup and EFL Cup to be played during certain weeks. Also, if both clubs go all the way to the further stages of both Champions League and the expanded Club World Cup, they will play a LOT of games in this season. The Champions League Final will be held on May 31, whereas the new Club World Cup kickoff will be held on June 15. If either of those clubs are in the Club World Cup Final, to be held on July 13, they will obviously don't have the preseason games for 2025/26. Also, African footballers will be heavily affected by this anomaly, since they had to compete in the AFCON. The upcoming edition of AFCON in Morocco will be held during midseason of 2025/26. Additionally, the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, although the date is still yet to be confirmed, will most likely take place during midseason due to the harsh weather in the country during the summer.
My biggest gripe is that theres no reason for two-leg ties for the knockout and playoff rounds. Just let the teams who ranked higher in the table host the match. That eliminates 2 of the 4 added games for players.
The best thing about the changes is that teams can't drop into the lower continental competition, this could mean that we see more underdogs actually have a chance
The dull matches in Euros 2024 on the last day are not due to the format. Look at AFCON, for example. Their final group stage day was particularly entertaining to watch. So it may be something else
In the euros my country of georgia wouldnt have made it through if it wasnt for thr expantion and i feel as tho these smaller clubs have gained more chanses with thr new changes which i really like
It's just not the Champions, doesn't have that magic. However, it seems UEFA loves to destroy great formats. Indeed the Champions League was a worsened version of the original Champions 's Cup, where only the league winners could lift the trophy. And that was too for the CWC, reserved to the winners of the national cups, and for the UEFA Cup, where 64 squads competed, usually the 2 and 3rd of every league. So, the 3 lived to umbelievably high standards, and the 3 were espectacular. Now.... You got me.
I support a small club relatively speaking, it got to the conference league a few years ago and europa league a couple of years before that. This new format give me no hope that it will even be able to compete with the top 5/4 leagues. All this does it make the group stage far morw boring and overcolpicated, I genuinely so not benefit to this system as a veiwer, yey i get to see real Madrid play man city 3 times a season instead of twice (not counting friendlys), what joy. Also if anything this makes it harder for small clubs to make it far as they have to overpeform to a extrem extent to get autamic promotion and if they don't they will end up playing in the play off making it harder to advance as the poorer teams dont have the depth to perform and olay at such a high level for 10 games! I is so common in the polish league for teams who get into europe to have a season for hell in the league as they dont have the depth to play on three fronts (league, cup and europe). Dont even get me started on the fact the this season 5th place in the Italian league got automatic promotion. 5th in the "champions" league! Most leagues 5 place doesn't even get to conference league! 5th is mid table, how does a time that is basically out of the title rance by January end up in the "champions" league. This format is 100% to keep the rich rich.
As someone who supports a small club I’m interested to see where this goes. I don’t like the new format but if that helps teams such as mine (Panathinaikos) be a bit more relevant in Europe I’m all in for it
Back in ancient times when we had 3 European Cups and the matches were all played on Wednesdays, I would block those evenings in my calendar so I could watch all the matches. Now, I often don‘t even know that games are being played, and I never watch them at all. The Champions League is a complete misnomer as almost none of the teams are truly champions.
Honestly i really like the new format. It does offer much more exciting games in the group stage compared with before. It will allow for more last minute excitement for qualification as clubs could shoot up the table. It allows for smaller teams to be more likely to be on equal footint than the bigger clubs (as an Aston villa fan i really appreciate this). The only issue i see is only playing teams either home or away
Hot take: These extra matches aren't that bad, take an example from last year. Bernardo Silva played 90 minutes, 5 times in the span of 2 weeks, this caused fatigue and could've led to injury. Whilst 62 mln€ signing Nunes sat on the bench for all of those games. My point is: if coaches use their depth, it would lead to less injurys.
i dont give a fuck if arsenal or shaktar get 10 million more or less, we are getting more games, more football, more excitement. thats a win win period.
well said. i like the idea of more high level matchups, but at the cost of player fatigue and overall health i just dont think its worth it. id rather have 1-4 great matchups per tournament with both teams at full strength than 1-4 great matchups per week with teams resting stars for health concerns
I mostly hate how there's no more chance to drop down to the Europa League. Clubs like PSV will practically always qualify for the Champions League, but never again have a chance to win anything.
Can't wait for 7 teams to be on 8 points and half the group stage is decided on goal difference. You cant do head2head because not all teams are playing each other either.
With federations like UEFA making decisions for the sole purpose of economic gain, I think players should start including clauses in their contracts that prevent them making a certain number of appearances each season. This will hopefully lead to fewer serious injuries to players down the line
Not gonna lie, format-wise I like this better than the old system. the teams play a more balanced pool of teams and the chance of you getting screwed with a worst draw or getting carried with a better draw sounds amazing to me. BUT knowing that this format was made so they can make more money AND it's making the players play more games when there's an injuries crisis sours the feeling a bit. In a world where the game increase didn't put that much strain on the players and the money disparity wasn't an issue between teams, this new format is FANTASTIC. sadly, it's not true, leaving a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Stealing this format for CPU tournaments in fighting games tho. This would be hilarious.
The group stage format is similar to many chess tournaments. There's a huge difference between chess players and soccer players . The way chess and soccer are being played are light years away in difference.

Dont all losers of the playoffs go to the europa league or am i tripping? Europa league still has a 1/32 phase after the group stage even though its only 36 teams
@@danello2367 in old format 3rd group places would play in the lower tournament, this wont be a thing anymore
@@superninja252 in sofascore for the europa league it says that the first 8 teams go to the 1/16 while the other 16 go to the 1/32. I was thinking that those other 16 teams come from the champions league but maybe im wrong

I love the new system. Swiss system>>>>playing 3 different opponents twice each. I would however remove the knockout play-off round, as I think that it's ridiculous that results obtained from 8 matches against 8 opponents can be completely overriden by 2 matches against 1 opponent.
@@JustAnotherUA-camCommenteridk im conflicted, i agree with you but the brutality of football esp at the highest level is kind of fun however atleast from uefa's perspective its supposed to be about fairness not fun (that said fun = engagement = profit = uefa happy)
i actually love it. people have gotten used to it, but the group stage in the old format really sucks. with the exception of the one group of death every year, for the vast majority of groups you know who's going through before it starts, and half the matches played don't matter. now every match matters and teams have an incentive to win every game to get better seeding or not go through an extra knockout stage. it's good for both small and big teams. it's not good for players because it's more matches in an already crammed schedule, but as the most important club competition. i think it should take precedence over stuff like the efl cups or the endless summer friendlies they keep playing for some reason.
Most people are just nostalgia merchants, I like the change
This is the Super League by the back door.
Exactly. Why are all three cup competitions called 'leagues' now? And this new format is close to what the rich clubs wanted anyway.
Yeah it feels like they are slowly transforming the champions League into a super league but under UEFAs control

So, basically, I'm saying that after a little while of groaning, people will absolutely fall in love with the new format.
they will watch and continue to watch despite the groaning for sure
but to fall in love with it ? idk
Exactly thank you
i'm rocking with the new format but there was absolutely no reason to increase from 32 to 36 teams.
Dude, What do U mean? If UEFA just NEVER did the new format, The Super League would literally exist right now. They had to save this competition in some possible way.
@@Suarez05 the super league wouldn't be able to happen either way bcs most clubs left it there's literally no reason to change it over then money
the format doesn’t work with 32 teams, you need an uneven amount of teams in each pot to make keep the amount of matches same for each team
Its finally the UEFA Champions League and not the UEFA Champions Tournament
Fun Fact: San Marino won against Liechtenstein And they won there first match in 20 years so now they have 2 wins
The Club World Cup should really deserved this video. I watched Rabona TV's own and he gets pissed off about the extended schedules.
Seeing Maxwell in a Legia shirt was a surprise one to be sure, but a welcome one
Its honestly so much better than the group stages give it a year and the majority will prefer this format
Have they got rid of the extra bonus that Real Madrid got for being Real Madrid.
It's like all the CL teams play in 1 leauge and they just stop after round 8 and go to a knock out stage system based on how much points they have at that moment
They should have stayed with 6 games per team, but put it in the league roster. We'll see how it goes
Watch Conference League. They have exactly that
Problem with that is drawing from the pots, but could probably be better. Like lower ranked pots only get 1 draw from pot 1 & 2. While pot 1 & 2 get like two draws from pot 1 & 2, but only one each from pot 3 & 4. That sounds a bit unfair to the bigger teams, but would maybe help with the disparity.
No matter the format, no matter the teams that are in the champions league.
One thing is certain Arsenal will lose in the Champions League.
He probably hates it cuz assna won't get a title soon 😂
Guess what, San Marino won 1 - 0 in the Nations League
they missed an opportunity to rival Papa Perez's super league.... the point of a league system was to see real madrid play in a 10,000 capacity stadium. the best plays the worst round rubin.
San Marino JUST WON A FOOTBALL MATCH
I also hate the fact they literally said that now clubs can play against more clubs of the same skill level, but in previous years, you could get lucky and get a easy, or slightly easy group, but now you’re just 100% playing against at least 2 clubs who are way better and way higher ranked then your team
huh. i don't get it. you're still using a pot system, so you can still theoretically get an easier draw. it's just that if you get 2 good teams in your draw, you aren't immediately eliminated before the competition even starts.
That’s the point only 2 but also 2 clubs there size not like before 3 giants
THEY DID IT!
THEY FINALLY DID IT!
SAN MARINO WON!
*SAN MARINO WON!!!*
I only like this league format for Conference League because they only playing six games instead of eight...that's it really
my favorite part about the new format - you can’t enter europa league and conference league by getting eliminated from the bigger tournament
this definitely helps smaller clubs, you can’t have stupid repeats like sevilla did and you don’t have someone like barcelona coming and destroying everyone
Swiss System sounds kinda.......odd
*SAN MARINO JUST BROKE A 20 YEAR WINLESS STREAK*

AND SAN MARINO HAVE DONE IT!!!!!!!!!
I actually really like the format, because every big team now has to face at least another 2 big teams from the same pot, so we dont get to see city just making the first phase of the ucl their training matches
the only thing i didnt like is the increased games played
In the long run, this format rewards consistency and makes the competition even more exciting for fans!
absolutly
Less jeopardy means less excitement.
chatgpt
AI ass answer 😆
This actually made me like it more
Pros: not closed or semiclosed like superleague proposal
teams getting chance to play against teams from their pot(beneficial for teams that are much better than all teams in their pot)
No transfer to europa league
Every game matters
Cons: Maybe too much games
Additional 4 spots not given to lower leagues
January games(for those leagues that have winter break)

Maqwell. Please do a video on San Marino's first competitive win in a competition
And then do san marino part 2 as an "commemerating event"
A lot of people are overacting without even giving it a chance.
There's now a lot more jeopardy, a higher chance of exciting matches, and more diverse teams while maintaining the integrity of qualification. We shouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water and resist change just because.
Also, this is just a pet peeve; it was called the Champions "league" without actually being a league. At the very least, it fixed that. 😹
And with the majority of the teams competing in it not champions
People are not overreacting to the format they have every right to be angry especially fan's of lower league teams there was no reason to change the format
i like the new format! we will see diverse matchups!
as a villa fan, i honestly see this as being alot more favourable for smaller champions league clubs like ours. obviously we get the extra revenue from the 2 additional games, but we are garuanteed 4 away days, in 4 different locations across europe and since we play 8 teams instead of 3 theres a much smaller chance of us simply being thrown out because we got unlucky and drew with a handful of very difficult teams. plus theres alot more diverse and interesting matchups. i do understand why some people are annoyed, but i think its a good change for alot of smaller teams that would've struggled in the old format

Relegation system of the bottom 2-4. tournament at the end for top 8
less games then champions league more high intensity.
San Marino won a football game, they beat Liechtenstein 1-0 in the Nations League for their first competitive win in country history
Oh so that's why I'm getting notifications of this crazy games on the Champions League... I honestly thought that I had missed the group stage again.
I got a massive headache when I saw the group stage draw alone
The best thing about the changes is that teams can't drop into the lower continental competition, this could mean that we see more underdogs actually have a chance
The dull matches in Euros 2024 on the last day are not due to the format. Look at AFCON, for example. Their final group stage day was particularly entertaining to watch. So it may be something else
Give me san marino video this is an emergency
SAN MARINO FINALLY GOT THERE FIRST WIN 🏆 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Maqwell in 1 month: I LOVE THE NEW CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
As someone who supports a small club I’m interested to see where this goes. I don’t like the new format but if that helps teams such as mine (Panathinaikos) be a bit more relevant in Europe I’m all in for it
UEFA created their own super league just with more matches and more teams 😂
Maqwell San Marino just won a game
The new format is great for the smaller teams. And it is much more exciting to face eight different opponents.
maxwell is dripped out with a legia jersey wtf 🦅🦅🦅🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱
I only started watching football since a year and a half ago, but I kinda like this, it feels more like a champions LEAGUE.
But I do feel bad for the smaller clubs getting less of the revenue, FA Cup not doing replays, and player injuries.
Players with more games to play: "I will never recover from my injuries"

i saw a poll 65 percent people said they hated this new format yea uefa isbt really doing anything justice when most people don’t even like it
well said. i like the idea of more high level matchups, but at the cost of player fatigue and overall health i just dont think its worth it. id rather have 1-4 great matchups per tournament with both teams at full strength than 1-4 great matchups per week with teams resting stars for health concerns
I actually like this format ngl
San Marino beat Liechtenstein 1-0!
