That sample from "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" by Isaac Hayes is probably what gives that song that west coast vibe you were talking about. Several west coast rappers have sampled that song.
"... but I'll give 'em a chance 'cause I'm civilized / as for the rest of the world they can't realize a cell is hell / Im a reble, so I rebel / Between bars got me thinkin' like an animal" Chuck D was writin that real shit
Finally...you made it to this cut. The deeper in you go, the harder it's gonna' be listening to whatever is being played or streamed these days. I might be an oldhead, but I ain't wrong...
I am 56 - i was 21 when I heard this cut..... Thank you young man for posting this....Just watching you rock off this made me a new subscriber...Peace to you and yours Young Warrior.....
I was a sophomore /junior in high school when this came out. My parents were in the Nation from the 50's so I heard all the stories 1st hand about Malcolm & others, how Malcolm told my father he would take his car & drive it from Detroit to Harlem & meet him there, how Farrakhan told my pops he had a 'voice of gold' then PE came out rapping about these type of events from that era. It was personal. I got to college & saw / met them in concert at the school. I see Griff to this day in Atl from time to time. Real ones
Finally my brother, yes, thank you for listening to this. The other version has an extra verse, check it out whenever you can. My favorite line is: I'm on a tier where no tear should ever fall
@@StaxReacts I am a born and raised pasty White Liberal Democrat Alabamian Grandma. I was raised to love everyone for who they are, and not for what they look like. I thank God for my Parents. I could have turned out so much differently in this racist State.
West coast West coast West coast Come on my brother I'm from the boogie down bronx With long hair tattoos and wearing a public enemy t shirt and a slayer Pit Chuck D has one of the smoothlist flows. Of any m c
Yesir You reacted to this I can’t believe it thank you so much for reacting salute my Guy appreciate it keep grinding much love and respect 🫡 from Cali
This came out in '88. But DJ Quik sampled the same song for "Born and Raised in Compton" in '91. The sample is an Isaac Hayes joint with a long-a$$ title.
I was in middle school when this dropped and I didn’t understand a lot of what he said as a white kid in the suburbs but I could still recite half the album. lol. And still remember more that I expected having not heard this in a few decades.
Im black. I was 16 when this came out and I remember not catching all the lyrics from the album but since its my favorite album of all time. ive been playing it on the regular over the past 30 plus years and im not catching stuff i didnt catch before.
A lot of ppl reacting to the Bomb Squad production being called West Coast sounding, but they also produced the first Ice Cube album, so yeah, some ppl would know the sound but not necessarily know they worked with Public Enemy first. So in the Ice Cube Song Jacking for Beats, one of the lines is, Even if you’re down with my crew, I’ll jack you too, and Welcome to the Terrordome is sampled.
Play Preaching to the Quiet, Hazy Shade of Criminal, Hitler day and New whirl Odor. “It’s scary getting screwed without a dictionary “ is one of the lyrics. Then check out Air Conditioning.
@StaxReacts The line 'Just like Oliver's neck I had to get off' refers to Oliver North in Reagan presidency era. He was an official (colonel or something in the cabinet) who mad some deals to sell/funnel Drugs and Weapons to an anti-communist group (The Contras to fight against the Sandanistas) in Nicaragua. It was called the 'Iran Contra Scandal' He was pardoned or got off without any prison time once the scandal was revealed. The whole song was about the idea of Black Revolutionaries being punished for their freedom fighting movements when black folks don't get same rights or not treated fairly under the law but have been expected to be loyal & fight in the military. This was especially the case when the military had the draft up until after the Korean or Vietnam wars. Basically you expect us to fight in wars, loose our lives but yet don't have the same right or treatment hence 'I got a letter from the government the other day, I opened & read it it ... They wanted me for their army or whateva... Picture me given a damn I said neva...' Think of Muhammad Ali's refusal to report for military service when he was drafted.
I forgot how great the story is in this song. And yeah, it's certainly less noisy than a lot of PE songs. Now I'd like to hear Snoop drop something over this beat. Some other PE songs I'd love to see you react to are "She Watch Channel Zero", "Cold Lampin' With Flavor", "Yo Bumrush the Show" and I'm also going to add "M.P.E." for the crazy beat and one of the very few tracks that has both Chuck and Flav rapping on the same song.
The best part it’s the double meaning for the whole song It’s seems like a prison struggle and break song, but the underlying meaning is the struggle and black people have “breaking out” from the oppression of race and the system. Chuck D is a genius IMO. This is one of my top 3 of them.
You made me laugh when you said it sounds like west coast and could see Snoop on here!! This album came out in 1988 and Carlton Ridenhour (Chuck D) formed the group while attending Adelphi University on Long Island in New York State! I’ve been listening to a lot of reaction videos lately and some of the stuff that is said is unbelievable. I’m not saying you personally just in general. I actually happen to really enjoy your channel and for me at age 49 it’s always a good idea to get the opinions of younger folks rising up. It’ll be young men and women like you running the show sooner than probably think. Keep up the great work. I’ve watch at least 20 of your videos in the past couple days. You got some talent bro!
This is a PE track I wasn’t as familiar with, but when I saw the thumbnail I knew to get on it. That keyboard sounds a bit eerie- think they’re using what’s called dissonance for that. And I realized one thing rap excels at is lyrics, because you need real bars to hit hard.
those S1W's were Hard , You got scared when they came out .,., and it was a fad for a year too .,. like Black Panthers all militant with Uzi's ,., They were blasting full clips of blanks on stage
Probably my all time favorite Public Enemy jam.
This is the song that made me a Public Enemy fan, and in turn buying this cassette.
This one along with Can't Truss It🫡
Followed by 52 brothers. Bruised, battered, and scarred but hard
Hard as FK!!!!! STILL!!!!!
We all wanted to be S1W's
That line at the start “Get in that cell, n**ger!” was sampled from, believe it or not, “Living For The City” by Stevie Wonder.
That sample from "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" by Isaac Hayes is probably what gives that song that west coast vibe you were talking about. Several west coast rappers have sampled that song.
One of the most militant songs ever
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
One of Chuck D's hardest raps.
You’re down the rabbit hole now! Well done!!!
I was born in 84 and this is my earliest memory of music played by my father. Along with EPMD and Eric B & Rakim.
Lucky kid
You got the Best music education when it comes to Rap.

Lol STAX you should see your face bro I remember when the song came out 🔥🔥

this is the short version of the song. a whole verse was cut out in this video
Maybe West coast vibe but they are straight up New York born and raised!
P. E. is an education of 80's/90's sociology. Always have been. Chick D is a poet. KRS-1, too.
Im so glad that you are diving intothem.
We need a female political rapper to come out now and call herself Chick D.
Love it💙
