This was the most honest assessment of the City of Syracuse that I have ever read.
You hit on all the points that need to be addressed to someone that may be thinking of moving here.
Your reporting on both sides of the coin is spot on.
I currently live in Westchester County and everyone always reports that this area is the "place to be"!
Well, Syracuse can be the "place to be" based on your honesty in reporting of the pros, cons and facts.
While no place is heaven, Syracuse is pretty much a rung on that staircase in so many good ways.
    Thank you!

I grew up east of Syracuse in the small town of Cazenovia in the 70’s and 80’s. I spent a lot of time in Syracuse because of family and there was nothing to do in Caz. I’ve been out of the state since 93 and have visited several times.
    Things I miss:
    1. Having real winters. 60 degrees at the holidays is depressing and I don’t look forward to spring. Summers in central New York are very nice too.
    2. Great food, especially Italian food, pizza and sandwiches. Pavones Pizza!
I miss the Brooklyn Pickle subs and sandwiches!
    3. It isn’t trendy and cosmopolitan and people are pretty real and for the most part, they are easy to talk to
    4. Lack of any real traffic
    5. Low cost of living. Yes, the property taxes are high but it still comes out cheaper by a long shot.

My husband spent a lot of his childhood in Syracuse. We've been to the Great New York state Fair many many times. It's also close to the Finger Lakes. One of our favorite towns is Skaneateles.

I've lived in Syracuse since 1982, I am now 62 yrs. old. I am recently retired due to health issues, my husband is still at his job where he's been for 37 yrs. We own our home on the near west side not far from downtown. Yes the crime is totally out of control. Partly due to lack of parenting & the NYS bail reform & all that comes w/ it. There is no longer accountability for criminal behavior in NYS. There are many apartments in ghetto areas charging the same rental fee you mentioned for a piece of crap apt. The are good landlords & there are slumlords. During the pandemic no one was required to pay rent even if they still were employed during that time. We used to rent out our back apt. in the house that we live in. We hardly ever got our full rent paid ( which was only 55o.oo a month) so we no longer rent to anyone. Our last tenants son intentionally started a fire in that apt . because his father didn't want him there. Not a huge amount of damage thankfully. I just wanted to give you my prospective on that side of the issue.

Dude, you didn't mention the NY State Fair, 14-18 days of summer fun and easily accessible for anyone living in Syracuse... because it's in Syracuse! Before the pandemic I'd try to get there 2 or 3 times to check everything out and sample food that would be harder to get outside of the Fair.
As for the snow... I'll just say you'd have hated the year we got 192", which was pretty miserable, but still way, way less than what Oswego got that year at around 325"... I'll give you that one, even though I actually love snow; someone's got to. lol

This video was great. I've been to Syracuse twice in the past 8 months. I loved it! My family and I want to move, but unsure of which neighborhoods are good and bad. We loved Dewitt and Liverpool area. I was wondering if there are any other good towns/places that we could feel okay with my 14 year old son going to school. I saw nice homes in the city but I wasn't too sure of the type of neighborhood it was because it was day time. I am from Brooklyn NY... so the crime here is ridiculous. I'll take half the crime anywhere else. haha. Thanks.

I live in Liverpool - (close to the North Syracuse border). The Liverpool Central School District (LCSD) is phenomenal as well; DeWitt is also a nice area. There are also a lot of family-oriented events around, lots of county and state parks in the area. Our children are all grown up and went to the LCSD. Oh.. and one interesting thing - nature-wise. We have the largest congregation of eagles in the northeast! They can actually be seen out of the back parking lot of Destiny USA (I'm guessing you may have seen it for you can't miss it if you drove on Rt 81). I've photographed them a lot. As for the weather... Yes, we have cold and snowy weather - BUT, the snow removal and road prep is PHENOMENAL! There was only one day that I can remember where driving was questionable but that was after a blizzard went through in the late 1990s. Oh... and most of the "bad" issues of Syracuse do not truly apply outside of the city limits.

The best schools in the area are F-M (Fayetteville-Manlius), and J-D (Jamesville-DeWitt). As a private ESL tutor, I worked with students in both of those districts and they were well prepared. I went to school in the Syracuse Public School System. It's pretty rough, and violence was always a problem for me. Moving west. Westhill is a good district. I was particularly impressed with their art departments, but the students enjoyed school and were well prepared.
Having said that, despite having lived here all my life (except for eight years), I would absolutely disagree with this video when he states public transportation is good. If the busses ran more frequently, the system might work. But getting anywhere a bus doesn't directly go is a HUGE investment in time. There is no train system. For example, I live near SU. In the morning, it takes a minimum of two hours to get from here to Liverpool, which means a four hour commute daily. Liverpool is about eight miles from here. The roads are well set up, but civic services are carried out with less regularity than necessary. I was stuck on my street last year for 36 hours after a snow storm, because the plows skipped our street; I live on a big hill in the city proper.
The people are nice. The weather sucks. I would just add this to the above. By the way, I have lived in Boston and NYC, for points of comparison.

Yess thank you I say don’t live in Syracuse if you have a choice ..... the outskirts are plenty close and centro goes right there too .... but that’s just me I love my city . I spent so much time there . There’s much to love but it’s getting crazy inside the city limits anywhere. But I understand he spent 2 years here so I never knew how rough it can be until I ventured outside of armory square and destiny USA lol

    • @Nothing-zw3yd
      @Nothing-zw3yd 2 роки тому +2

My company is located in the near west side a few blocks west from Armory Square on West Fayette, bordering a really rough neighborhood to the south of us. We have gotten broken into several times, but it's usually not the local residents. The local troublemakers prefer to just break windows and throw trash everywhere. It's also easy to spot the drug houses, I know what a drug deal looks like and they don't even try to hide it.
There are some people that are working really hard to improve the neighborhood without gentrifying it and driving current residents out, so there's hope.
I'm only still here because I love my job and the company I work for. Otherwise I'd have moved away a long time ago. I live outside the city in a nice quiet neighborhood now.

Crime doesn’t scare people like me away from a place I like. I’m from Newhaven Connecticut. And I pretty much learned don’t try to be gangsta or something you’re not and what goes on in the streets won’t personally effect you. Unless a bullet flies through your window or for whatever reason you were chosen to get robbed. Lastly it may effect you the most if you’re like me and want the best for your community.

@@kristynlangley9672 Why do you love that place ? I lived there when it WAS good but now forget it. Downtown BEEN GONE YEARS AGO ! there is nothing there to love or hold on to, the tight black community that lived in the pioneer homes and the Bricks are ALL GONE. People who are progressive and want something out of life won't live in a place like that, have you noticed the S.U. Students graduate and LEAVE, they don't stay and build families there because Syracuse has nothing to offer them other than university college if you travel down rt 90 west and get off at the Rochester NY exit you will see a totally different environment ( yes there is crime in the INNER city areas ) but Rochester is a FAMILY CITY 🎉 they have TONS of stuff to do for families and it's not expensive for example they have a Children's Museum that is GIGANTIC ! you can spend hours in that place enjoying your family they have a Butterfly room with butterflies from all over the US flying around. Syracuse has never ever had anything even close to that, Rochester even has a AMUSEMENT PARK called Sea breeze and it is very nice.

Pretty good assessment. I lived there from 2016-2018, and I'd say my fav pro was Stella's Diner ( not far from the mall ) and attending comedy shows in the mall itself, and yes, the almost NO traffic ( even on a Fri evening! ) I lived in Liverpool off Morgan Rd and my rent then was only about $930/mo, and it was a 2bd/1.5 ba apt about 930 sq ft. The winters there can get bad, but at least they waste *no* time in plowing the streets and parking lots. The crime there is bad ( or at least was then ) but I never made friends ( outside of the people I worked with there, who I despised most of them lol ) as easy as I did, in Syracuse too. Most folks there are friendly. About the potholes, yes, I would say all of upstate NY ( outside of Buffalo and Albany ) is very neglected. Utica is bad too, but Binghamton is the worst.

    • @user-lu8yf7yt7w
      @user-lu8yf7yt7w 9 місяців тому

Part of the reason that traffic isn't bad is that the city's population has dropped from about 220,00 to about 150,000, so the roads were designed for a larger city. The weather is pretty bad - historical average snowfall is 123" per year, most of any city in the U.S. and it rains a lot in the other seasons. The countryside is pretty nice. I grew up there but haven't been back in years. A lot of the amenities and culture, sports etc. depend on Syracuse University. @@naudianeels1328

I was born and raised in Syracuse (in ALL the bad places, LOL - including the projects right BEHIND the on ramp to 81 South!) and relocated to Brooklyn in 2005. YES, I tell people all the time - Syracuse is TWICE as violent as they THINK NYC is, and it's actually been that way for as long as I can remember (yes, it has increased). That, and the homelessness, are directly tied to the fact that Syracuse is one of the poorest cities in America, with a nearly 30% poverty rate (for cities with over 100,000 people). Awesome observations! 😄

What are the requirements to rent apartments in Syracuse? NYC requires good credit rating and 40x income so $3500 rental in NYC requires income of $140,000 yrly income, is Syracuse using the same 40x rule or do they use the standard 3x rule? What resources did tou use to find your $595/$615 monthly rental?

    • @jabsskywalker

The only requirement for me was a deposit and first months rent. There were no credit checks. I believe there was some type of rule for my employment but it's definitely not too crazy. You just have to say what job you're going to do and how much you'll make in a year. It didn't matter as long as you could afford a month's rent. Syracuse was Good back in the 60s and 70s but once all the Department stores left downtown and moved out into the Malls, it was Over for Syracuse. Everything it had going for it left and because its in the middle of Nowhere there is nothing attractive about it. It never really was a Vibrant family place to begin with, the City planners never cared to make it a happening city they tried to host a jazz fest in the 90s and it started out good being 7 days long but like every thing they try to do, it desolved down to 2 days then they took it from downtown and moved it to the OCC campus then it moved from there to jamesville beach, now its back downtown the Carousel Mall was Great but again they changed it to destiny mall with hardly any stores in it ( all the really nice stores left )

I always tell people, if there is one thing that Syracuse has, it's an amazing amount of great restaurants. A lot of them are hidden gems in outlying neighborhoods that you have to know where they are or you won't just come across them.
I drive 81 every day and it does look like shit, and the number of asshole drivers is ridiculous. The plan is to remove it entirely going through the city, route traffic going north around the city on 481 (which would also have to be completely overhauled to handle the extra traffic), and create a "community grid" starting just south of SU hill to just north of 690. They made it look like the public had a say in it, whether it was going to be replaced as it is or go the way of the grid, but everybody knows it was just lip service. That was a few years ago and nothing has gone forward with it. And when we get a lot of snow, the side streets, especially in some certain neighborhoods, they either don't bother plowing, or the locals just park wherever they want so plows can't get down the street to clear them. There is alternate side parking in effect, but it's largely ignored, and they don't tow cars in violation of it.
Syracuse prides itself on being "progressive", but it sure seems to not make much progress on anything meaningful. Seems like most changes are just vanity projects. It's the locals that are doing the most on their own without the local government's help.
I don't hate it here, and I have a ton of family and great friends, a good job, and plenty to do... but when I retire, I'm out of here.
    Great video!

I hate the burgers at Ale n Angus. The beef isn’t my jam. Amazing Italian food in Syracuse & Onondaga county in general. Lacross is huge in most of NYS. Public transport is horrible, as there’s a lack of it, especially after pandemic, they cut routes & schedules. Getting a bus outside of Syracuse, such as a morning commute from even 1 mile out of city proper, is non existent. Crime: juvenile crime has skyrocketed! Fentanyl is gaining traction & weapons use is rising. Home owner’s & business owners are obligated to clear snow off their sidewalks, but they never do. And homelessness amongst youth & mentally challenged is rising, but majority of the straight panhandlers are not homeless. They’re just panhandlers, including the fake fiddlers. Plows & salt destroy the roads, but they do not plow side streets, & if school is canceled, they focus on University area, since that’s where all the hospitals & campus are. But the surface roads are physically not well maintained outside of the “Hill” area, of downtown, outlying “residential neighborhoods” are decently maintained, Sedgwick area, Eastwood area, roads are better than South or West sides of city

Tipp Hill and Eastwood have usually been considered two of the better neighborhoods within the city, though I've heard in my last visit there that Eastwood has had a few issues crop up. Far Westside is down the hill north of Tipp Hill, and isn't bad. He's right about the northside in general, but if you're close to or north of Court St, you'll be OK. Westside - you'd REALLY have to know the blocks: there's a reason why the area ranks among the poorest neighborhoods in the ENTIRE COUNTRY. Some streets/blocks are OK, and some ain't. Park Avenue is OK (east of S Geddes is better). I'd be very wary of Skunk City downhill from W. Onondaga, but uphill of W. Onondaga is going twds the Strathmore area, and that's decent. STAY THE F AWAY FROM DELAWARE AVE & THE W ONONDAGA/DELAWARE/S. GEDDES TRIANGLE AREA! It was baaaaad when I left the city in 2016 and it's still bad now.
Southside - part of me hates the rep it has in part because it is heavy in African-American residents. That said, you'd have to know someone locally who knows which blocks in particular are OK. Otherwise, you'd be better off looking in the Valley which is right south of southside (Seneca Turnpike).

My sister went to college at Onondaga community college (OCC) and it was a 30 minute drive so she tried to take the Centro bus system at least 5 times and every time they took wrong turns and went past the bus stop by our house that it was supposed to stop at.
