Also I've been thinking and I feel that the messages in the phone in game also got really under used, it was used mainly used for story progression and tips for tricks and the only good use I saw on it on my playthrough was when Shine was taking me around the mall.
if anything it could have been a way to know more about characters by just having them send just random messages every now and then
I feel like that wouldve made the world feel more lived in and I think it would take less effort than the other stuff I mentioned before
*also thanks for all the comments, I've been reading all of them and honestly wasn't expecting such detailed discussion its great to see how deep the jsr/brcf and team reptile community is

@@SpaceManNoHelmet As an animator in the field, getting One animation approved takes a while. And plus multiply rails grinding, air tricking and floor tricks by 3 for the three different trick buttons, TIMES the three different items, (skates, board and bmx). Therefor you have to make 27 different unique animations that also have to be REALLY short so that you're not locked to an animation for more than 2 seconds. All of this, for ONE character to have an all unique moveset. You get all these limits that a small team like team reptile does not have the budget or time, instead they made a solid base with really awesome anims for each. But, i 100% understand the frustration, so here's hoping all the love and support gives them more than enough resources and inspiration to make a continuation that has all of that and more

@@momo4081 oh wow thanks for commenting it’s nice to hear the perspective from a animator , also on the video I mentioned that even having the characters locked to using a single skate ( skate board only or bmx only) would’ve also helped the game since using a character u liked would make u use a skate u probably haven’t used much while playing and would’ve changed up the gameplay slightly
Also it makes sense for the main character to be able to use all 3 since he’s supposed to be the best or whatever and it’s kinda funny thinking that every character in the game has pro level experience in all 3 skates.
But as for the 27 unique animations I see how much effort that would take but maybe if anything 1 unique air trick or something at the least could’ve gone a long way.

@@SpaceManNoHelmetI disagree with this notion that the general playerbase would've wanted characters locked to a single move style because it would make it so that people's fav characters would be limited to riding on whatever it is they ride. I think it's cool that Team Reptile gave players the option to switch between any move style with their different characters, it's less limiting. People like options but not too many options. If Team Reptile took you advice on this, you would undoubtedly leave some players thinking "damn I really like Shine but I wish I could have her ride [insert move style]" Which is worse than the current alternative we have now

You're absolutely right. I also feel like he game would have really benefitted from some more voice acting in the main story cutscenes, The story in BRC is much more front and centre than JSRF but aside from the occasional bark and "All city king" there's nothing. Even though most of JSRF's VO was just DJ professor K expositing at the player, it certainly helped keep the player engaged. Story cutscenes in BRC are just 5-10 minute moments of reading while I just want to get back to skating, with a bit of VO they would have been much more interesting.
One other problem i've got that ties in to the issue of every character being the same aside from appearance is that the dances are the same for each character. It would have been nice if one of the options in dance menu was just called "freestyle" or something, which would allow your character to do a dance animation unique to the character. Or alternatively, just playing unique dance animation as an idle animation just like in JSRF.

I get your points, my major criticism is that I've done everything in the game, all characters, all graffiti etc. I feel like the game could've benefited from something replayable (except for restarting the story) like a level creator or a way to reply Reds mind segments, a mission select or just races/re-battles with other crews post game

Just play through again, I've played through four times now, most of it is perfecting my tricks and finding new ways to traverse the spaces, as well as figuring out what combination of tricks on each style will play out to the music like I want. I found the best way to get quick tricks for fast songs is on the board, and for tricks that can cover multiple beats with one button, the BMX is best, the skates are overall well balanced but have the most repetitive looking tricks.
Just to make it clear in case it wasn't, I'm talking about how if you try and spam one trick while riding on a rail or the ground, there will be a delay between tricks at times and it won't always do a trick for every time you press the button, but you can seamlessly string tricks together if you can figure which tricks flow into each other or themselves without a obvious pause, it's tricky cause each style has a different feel to how the tricks string together. Matching quick seamless tricks to the music while traversing through the maps, is the replayability for me at least. (Also, tbh, not all games need to have replayability, a game can be played and end and still be an amazing and fulfilling experience, just look at early RE games)

    • @hrpdrp97

Not picks, not real issues. It's not missing features, it's a small independent game developer, not a AAA title from a large developer who has the resources to do everything you could want. It's a very casual friendly game and things are explained well, you just need to actually talk to the characters to understand how to take full advantage of the moveset, and if you never do you may struggle a bit or end up learning on your own which can be very rewarding. Not being able to change styles except at the hideout is fine cause you can just swap characters if you need a specific style, and the colors is a cosmetic thing most people swap to once and don't change up much, I swapped the color for each of my characters in my first run of the game only once or twice per character, and kept it on the ones I liked best.
There are real issues with the game, like glitches, and some weak boundaries (I broke out of bounds twice in my first playthrough, one time it was on accident and another it was intentional but way easier than I expected it to be) even had glitch on my third playthrough that nearly soft locked me, but tbh by that point i was trying to break the game. And even then it is a phenomenal game that was well made and balanced for a casual audience and they did a lot with what little resources they had compared to a company like sega.
Hell, there's a real compelling story, as simple as it is on the surface, they didn't have to do that, and the game would not have had as much of an impact if they just made another jet set game. They took the idea and made something that I feel truly pays homage to those classic titles without ripping them off or making something so different that it ends up becoming cluttered and confusing like hover was.

There's also the music that feels really limited.

My personal gripe is that post unlockable characters and dlc characters aren't in your hideout, it feels so empty knowing I have so many characters unlocked yet it feels deserted. Another is while in the hideout talking to the side characters let's you switch with them, but not the main story characters. An easy fix would to just add a checkerboard mat in the hideout to make customization a WHOLE LOT easier
Edit: another thing is when you change characters when your current one has a custom gear they revert back to the default vehicle color when you change back which just suck, with clothes they stay thank god but the vehicle's are annoying to where I feel collecting them pointless, you really have to stick with one character to make it work but I have at least three favorites I switch every so often

I would agree with some of this, as a JSR and JSRF person who likes the games for its old mechanics and tricks/ move sets it made the game fun and challenging, BRCF for me honestly is fun, slick with some of the characters and can see that the developers of Team Reptile had some love to the games, but as person who played JSR and JSRF I can say that it lack challenge for me and is too laid-back with how the mechanics are in the game and repetitive of the move sets.
Plus, I have to agree with the move set JSRF and JSR each characters had different move set some have the same move set, but usually half of them have different move sets and stats that is why it was unique and challenging for each different GGs you use trying as them, playing as Roboy was frustrating to uses, but I got a hang of Roboy like weeks too understand his move set and stats and learning the OG JSR skate mechanics was challenging as well doing cool flips with the PC or Controller was difficult, but great that I got a hang of. Seeing BRCF is too laidback with the move sets with only only 25 tricks in the game, while JSRF I can not remember how many Tricks it had, but I only know it had a backwards inline skating tricks and a manual grind as well and for JSR I do not remember also due to it has been awhile since I have played the games just the tricks are to laidback and repetitive for BRCF.
Also, for the mechanics for the graffiti JSR beats the graffiti mechanic in BRCF and JSRF no doubt might be a hot take, but honestly makes since and has a challenge when messing up like moving the mouse or controller feels like you are actually painting the graffiti and if you mess up the pattern on the screen your score of the graffiti goes back down to 50 points meaning you messed up your perfect score of getting Jet and what made it also challenging was the cops running up on you and what makes it even more problematic is paying attention to how much time you have before the mission ends now JSRF made the graffiti mechanic challenging somewhat by just if you miss the graffiti spot you got to go back and do it again no time, but cops still chasing in a way that it is not to hard to defeat the cops. BRCF mid cops and enemies fighting the only challenging boss was the ending boss that was it and the freezing of the graffiti was a good concept I think, but honestly too wack and simple and not even challenging I almost thought I was getting gun down by the cops and this happen once that the cop shot me while doing a graffiti and that was it so I was just floating in the air waiting to see if any other cops was going to do something, but nope I was just floating the air. A good example that uses the graffiti and fighting mechanics would be Gettin Up challenges are difficult with the graffiti and fighting is quite balance here and their and the authorities and bosses is no play.
Furthermore, combos to easy as well like I could get multiple points by a minute and end up with a big number, camera control is a bit jank in BRCF, but it beats JSRF’s camera and I would say JSR, but not sure for JSR, music is great, but some tracks to repetitive and DJ Cybers transitions to another music is good, but only have 4 songs and repeats with a headache, levels okay not a big fan of Pyramid Island too yellow makes me think of the minions and really hated the stage like it’s okay not going to put it on F tier just too much yellow so C tier and millennial square good map, but too open in the middle should have added more AIs or more obstacles, but Like B for me and lastly the characters chill, odd and just good characters.
Furthermore, sure you can call me a Oldhead for this, but honestly each game has it’s moments with it pros and cons I am not saying BRCF is not a good game like I would not say that since it still is fun while playing the game and I really enjoy the art and the music of the game like it shows a lot of heart of how Team Reptile give respect to JSRF and JSR like it is there and hopefully Team Reptile keeps making games if there is another parter with BRCF I would be supportive of this team sure it’s a small team, but my gosh they knew some of the patterns of JSR and JSRF and just did their own thing and fits in the middle of JSR and JSRF I feel it’s like the middle child , JSRF is the youngest and JSR is like the Oldest for me in my opinion honestly I would like to know what places other people would put them.
TL;DR sorry for this being long.

It literally is copy pasted, this was made by an indie dev studio, not Sega. Animations take thousands of hours to make and have fully polished, able to transition into it from any other animation in the game. Its a lot of work and someone has to be paid, indie dev teams cant afford to hire a full team of animators to work in tandem to give you AAA level animation variety. It was never in the original scope for the game.
They were working on this game for 3 years, im not saying they cant add other interesting things but individual animations for all the characters is an enormous ask, theyre not rockstar studios and new animations are 1000x harder to put in than say new levels or new character skins/voices. If they made a dlc pack with new movestyle animations id expect to pay for it because the money to pay the animators has to come from somewhere.

There’s a guy who has a jet pack that looks powerful but faces directly behind him, yet he rides a skateboard facing sideways, and the jet boost blows sideways from the actual exhaust! Weirdly enough I miss the velocity going up ramps or satellite dishes and the wall rides feel much more immediate and better, but if I pick up JSRF again I know I'll miss the corner leaning and not being tied to a rail in order to maintain a combo. I love this game and I would give anything for a sequel where they improve upon this stuff (or at least a Studio Trigger animation)

I agree that the characters could have had unique move sets. I also feel like the auto-save was a blessing and a curse. I didn't have to worry about the idea of saving, but it bit me in the rear when I was stumped on a crew battle that I no longer wanted to tack on at the moment. Going back to the game after taking a break from it forced me to go through that crew battle until I had beat it. It forced the progression.

Different / unique boost tricks per character would be nice, not in terms of strict animation but with utility; some characters could have farther aerial boost tricks, or they could give more momentum, or maybe some characters get unique boost tricks in circumstances where other characters cant, i.e. wall boost tricks, unique manual boost tricks, etc

I also hope the developers find a way to give us a Practice Mode like in JSRF, where we can use the unlocked characters and race in different maps. All in all tho, this game is amazing and I immediately played it again after the first completion, but yeah, a bit more personal moves to the characters and gangs would've been awesome

The thing is you have to look at the pinnacle of "Skating Games" to understand what Bombrush Cyberfunk was truly trying to accomplish. In Tony Hawk games it was extremely easy to rack up a lot of points, speed, height, and momentum. If you weren't grinding a lot of time you'd be losing a lot of speed so feeling on the ground as slower is just the natural state of skating. Of course a flat ground is going to suck that's skatings biggest bane in general. Which is why ramps, rails, and obstacles give them more to do. In Tony Hawk games you had a large variety of moves to do but the main reason why that was the case is because you're not really rewarded for using the whole map. The only reason you ever went around on the map was to find Mission Objectives but for Tricks and Combos you could be curled up in the corner just looping on the same ramp and rail over and over and get easy high scores. Since Skaters had unique tricks and stats it made it so certain characters straight up couldn't do mission objectives which is why Tony Hawk is a game many played but never beat back in the day. It was very esoteric as to what the Objectives even meant let alone how to get there and to have certain moves and stats get in the way makes the character design an objective flaw. No character in your game shouldn't be able to meet the challenge because then it makes players feel like "They're bad at the game" when in reality the design was very much against the player in almost every single way. Before Reverts and Ramp Tricks got better grinding was the only consistent way to build score. There wasn't any multiplier for using a niche hard to use section of the map that would drastically chamge your score in a meaningful way. Just alternating between two grind rails was all you needed. Sure there was a few unique tricks here and there especially with "Specials" but there still needed to be a "game". So naturally despite all the characters and moves you'd still ultimately be playing the same game with Flip, Grap, Grinding, Liptricks, and Manuals. What also ended up happening too is that some moves were just naturally better than others. Some flips were much slower and as a result you'd get less Score due to less Mulitpliers. So it created a hierarchy of "good moves" vs "bad moves". So that made half your unlockable characters never really worth it unless it was a cameo like Wolverine, Darth Maul, or Iron Man. Even then those characters were kind of bad because of how unbalanced "Stats" were in Tony Hawk. So if you picked the wrong character you'd just straight up have a worse time and end up making very slow to no progession as you try to make their jank moveset and abysmal stats work. The only worth it character was the PC because you upgraded his Stats.
This is a hard pill to swallow but you want homogenization in your character choices. There's a long line of history in various genres where you want a consistent base level or nobody will have fun or click with it as easily. In Bombrush Cyberfunk you're more rewarded for your overall approach than the Tricks themselves. Now you're very heavily incentivized to use the entire map when you want a big Score. I'll use THP3 map as the ultimate example of why they're a severally outdated game. Up above would be this fairly hard to get to area and padt a metal door would be this crazy lightshow room with a bunch of twisting rails and perfect circle bowl. It's one of the worst places to skate lol. There's very few good spots in THP games where it felt consistently good to combo all the time. Once they hit in "Underground" that's when they added gimmicks like Offboard Timers, switching to bikes, and the obligatory vehicle sections. Tony Hawk is a far mote bloated game by comparison but that's why I think I'm a lot more fond of Cyberfunk after I just beat and now doing post-game clean up. There's certainly some negatives like how hard it can feel to switch area, costumes, and skating equipment at times but overall I think this is the best package any skating genre has come close to. I think the combat was actually pretty interesting especially compared to Tony Hawks combat. Yes Tony Hawk technically had an attack where you smack them with your skateboard but since NPCs don't get stunned or KO they just get up and attack you back anyways When this is your competition Cyberfunk is easily the best skating game but only due to the incompetence of the THP series.

Considering the game, I really did think that gameplay wise it's solid, it has a great system, great music and vibe. I 100% agree that it could use some more variety, in animations in tracks, I just feel that if you were to improve any of these the game would be better off for it. It feels like they made the base game, added the 2 dlc characters and then turned their attention elsewhere, almost forgetting they just made a game. Which I say KNOWING the game they made was a great one and I stand by that. It's just hard to not look at it and wish there could be more to it.

0:56 All JSRF characters do the same moves and tricks, it felt different because they had different stats (not all of them though, Beat and Corn had the same stats, same with NT-3000 and YoYo). BRC characters all have the same stats, so they feel the same.
2:29 That was due to an autosave bug which they apparently patched (still pissed I lost 4 hours worth of gameplay thanks to that). Still would like manual saving though. Idk, I loved the game and had 0 issues with it other than wishing for more content and character development but comparing it to any of the jet set games is unfair considering the time gap, and gap in fact that this was done by an independent development crew and not a AAA game studio. I think your issue with the save was a glitch btw, as every time I left the game it wouldn't undo a whole chapter of progress, it saved every time the little auto save icon came up, and closing the game during an auto save can corrupt data for any game.
Also I actually enjoy that you can swap styles, I think it would be weird if we were forced to have one style per character cause it would remove a decent amount of the customizability of the game.

The mechanics are actually fun and fluid to control unlike JSR. The story is actually pretty interesting. Is the campaign some gripping tale with 30 different interlocking story beats? No? But it doesn't need to be, the game doesn't take itself that seriously. It's not like the Last of Us or some shit.
The game is fun to play, creative, campy (which I find to be a good thing) with some room for crestive expression and a half-decent skill ceiling.
However. I do agree with most complaints in terms of specific gameplay elements that are missing or overall useless.
There is no point in swapping movesets besides some very minor differences and just aesthetics. No point in swapping characters either as there aren't character specific stats or movestyles. Personally, I find some characters designs interesting so I play as them. That's as far as it goes.
I think different characters should have different tricks, maybe they could move slower or faster, use less boost, jump higher, have more hp, etc.
We are missing a graffiti maker. That's alright I suppose but even games from over 20 years ago have that feature.
We are missing a multiplayer. Which, would be awesome to have considering how this game would benefit greatly from different multiplayer modes. Because it's easier to control, being more like a Tony Hawk game mixed in with the platformer genre, there are alot more things you can do in a "competitive" setting because you're not using tank controls.
I wish the game had more content and more elements for self expression. There is basically no point in playing the game past 100% compeltion except for gameplay purposes if you just want to dick around for a while or something.

Even the world and background characters felt more alive. Being able to look in FPV helped me appreciate it more. They would place huge crowds of people specifically to make you feel like a rebel in the streets. There's not enough of that. I also didn't like most of the music in BRC. It's good but it doesn't get me PUMPED up like the games they are inspired by. I think they are also missing that important part, which is the narrator. It would hype you up before missions. Otherwise, the game can come across really dated and boring.

But the story is enjoyable, the levels are great, characters have great designs and interesting motivations, the different vehicles feel fun to controll, the platforming is enjoyable and there are good platforming challenges. The dream levels are awesome. There's a lot to enjoy about about game that sets it apart from JSR while also making it known where the inspiration lies.
