I keep hearing this again and again in the NYC fusion / jazz scene.... The heads on these tunes are very protracted and a bit through composed. It's a stark contrast to the way people used to write, that is to say, more or less right on top of the form you improvise with the melody just fitting on to that. Seems like the hip thing to do now is to construct a miniature tone poem which serves as bookends for the solo sections.
