I recently applied to a company, assuming the position I was being interviewed for, was for a press operator. It turns out they wanted hired me as a supervisor. I've never been a supervisor before and I'm a bit nervous. Any advice?
Whooo boy! What a surprise! But this is also a great opportunity! Books and books have been written on what a supervisor needs to do but here it is in a nutshell.... First, make sure you have clear expectations from your boss. What do they expect from you? When? Where? How much? If they are vague, keep asking. 2nd - try to get an understanding of the skillset your direct employees have and the job that your direct employees do. It is hard to manage them if you don't know what they do or how they do it. Roll up your sleeves and get down in the trenches with them. This will allow you to understand what they do but also what they need to do their jobs more effectively. A good tactic to use when meeting them is asking them, a) what would you like to see changed? b) what would you hate to be changed? 3rd - Attitude. You would think it is simple but way too many folks think that since they are now a supervisor, they get an attitude of "better than you". Be humble. Listen to them. 4th - let them know your pet peeves, and what you value. Things like honesty, transparency, hard work, etc. And lastly, hold yourself and your employees accountable. There are many other things that someone might tell you but that is the big bullets. I wish you good luck and please let me know how it's going and if you need help! Good luck!
Do you have an email, I’ve got a question that may be something you can do a video about but I don’t want to post it in comments, thanks for these practical nuggets!
I’m going to be leading my class soon
That’s awesome! Congratulations!
