- New forms of automation are radically transforming society. Advanced robotics and artificial intelligence are increasing productivity and improving lives. However, what will happen to our jobs and what skills will we need to perform them? In the following talk, David will provide answers to these questions and explain why we should look at technological developments with hope, rather than fear. David Timis is a EU Civics Outreach Fellow at Google and the Co-Founder of European Heroes, an initiative aimed at encouraging civic engagement among young Europeans. He is also an active member of the Global Shapers Community, a network of inspiring young people working together to address global challenges, and a Country Representative for the Common Futures Conversations project launched by Chatham House to facilitate dialogue between young people in Africa and Europe. 5 years ago plenty of people were making youtube videos and making a living off them.
He is right on point in that education is failing our youth, and they simply wont be smart (common sense smart) enough to qualify for the jobs that will be available to them and needed by society. I dont see education changing anytime soon (at least not in the USA), in any meaningful way. So yeah, best of luck to our youth, they are gonna need it
Programming is the only way I see as secure.
Education is NOT failing youth. 50% of adults in the USA attempt to get by with a CHILD's k-12 education instead of getting an adult's college education!

100,000,000 born in USA 1996 to 2020. Unskilled entry level is going to be crushing for 50,000,000! They better get access to college Student Placement Offices!
AI will be able to do a heck of a lot more than 5% of our jobs. I follow AI research closely, and frankly I don't think there is a job or task that AI or machine automation won't be able to perform. And I think this is a wonderful thing, humans should be focusing on the betterment of humanity through things like research, philosophy, literature, and art, not grinding life away doing menial tasks.

You are contradicting yourself. What do people have to look for in research or art when the ai can do it incomparably better? They may do it for fun, yes, but whatever they produce will impress no one and will be superfluous.

Google the most common jobs in the USA, and you will find 25 jobs that are being automated today. Only 5% of jobs are going to be fully automated? Tell that to the screen when you order food at a fast food restaurant. (And if you don’t think they are automating the cooking area do more research!) Or Amazon when you order from there instead of a cashier. 40% of the job losses are going to be permanent.
Tell it to a truck driver, or motel worker that depends on truckers stopping for the night.

@@nytroglicerine5311 Child labor is rare in the USA because of the Industrial Revolution. Women used to customarily have 8 to 12 children, many of whom died in early childhood.
You have indoor plumbing and refrigeration and a/c and thermostat controller heating because of the Industrial Revolution.
People live in used cars and in tents now instead of log cabins and shanties for the same reason
I loved this talk; thoughtful and comprehensive.
The experts talk about how to cope with the age of AI by acquiring skills like cumminication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, adaptability, resilience and continuous learning but they ignore the fact that these skills are belong them-the experts-the successful one-the top 5%. The fact is that the average person, the norms, the bottom 80% of population will never ever have those skills to cope with the AI era in any foreseeable future.
Humans are fundamentally problem solvers (to a large extent I think this is our purpose - like a giant organic computer) and I love/agree the point that we should come at this from a place Love, not Fear. If you look at it from Fear you can't see 6" beyond your feet. If you look with Love, AI will become one of the most incredible tools to advance existence.

Those born in the USA 1971 to 1995 may lack time until they retire, since there are only 33,000,000 born in the USA during those 25 years. The current 26 to 50 year olds need to try to be VERY self protective. They will never be able to do everything everyone insists on! Behind them are 100,000,000 birnb1996 tobl 2020. Delegate to them. They are our largest ever work force and are eager for employment upon reaching adulthood. USA might even run out of work for them to do!

Funny how pro-AI individuals keep on comparing AI with the Industrial Revolution. Anycase, we don't know for sure, but one of the biggest risks of AI is that it can lead to a whole class of people that would be essentially redundant. It would also possibly lead to a new super rich class, the data barons. No wonder individuals like Zucherberg is pro-AI. He would be one of those super rich class.
I would almost be willing to bet that you would refuse to give up all YOUR AI!

Is this not the elite that have creative jobs saying everything's going to be fine? As this is introduced people need to be supported as they lose their jobs and need to be retrained- many people cant be retrained because they are old or not intelligent or educated enough to understand the new technologies and how they can work alongside them. What are these new skills- computer programming, robot mechanic, data analyst? People that cant do these jobs will just be left with increasingly low paid, menial jobs as is already happening. There are so many bs jobs in our economy and if employers have an easy choice to automate they will. The bosses will become rich and the workers poor- exacerbating inequality. Zuckerberg et al see the world as a system but forget the individual. If you have been trained by the education system to think and act like a robot then you will be replaced. We are constantly expected to think as a consumer, well we also need meaningful jobs. Government and tech companies spend their lives making robots etc and forget that most people are still living boring lives, stressed and poor.
Exactly. Spot on. Most will be jobless because they are not intelligent enough to be of any use in the workforce. The barrier to entry in tech is High! And most of the world does not speak English as the first language also. A huge barrier for those who had a hard time in school with languages.
5% automatable jobs? Dude, you don't know what you're talking about... Just sit and watch the world the next 10 years... Not that the AI wouldn't create jobs, oh it will create lots of them. But to say that only 5% of today's jobs are fully automatable is just ridiculous...
Completely agree! 95% of jobs will be automated one way or another and that’s good for everyone.
I thought i was the only lne that noticed first 5% later almost 30%, there is no job that cant be automated, even art and photography is generated by AI
Actually, contrary to the initial expectations, looks like the 'creativity' of humans doing art is much easier to automate, than scientific thinking. I've seen already many pieces of AI art, which in my opinion are far better than anything a human can do. But when we succeed to make an AI scientist, then there will be nothing left that humans can do better. My hopes are in Neuralink and the brain-machine interfaces...

Pretty worthless talk. Life-long-learning? That is not new in any way. I think the guy should read a bit on the subject. Maybe read Nick Bostrom’s Superintelligence. Or Rise of the Robots by Martin Ford. I would think we are looking more at a polarized job market, with many needing to take low paid jobs and fewer having ineresting well paid jobs in the mid term, until the superintelligence makes those obsolete as well. So what is his practical advice to young people? What type of studied should they do? Worthless talk
