  • Did you know that teaching your dog how to smoothly change their leading leg during turns can make a huge difference in their agility and safety? It's a bit like teaching kids to be ambidextrous! Dogs, like humans, tend to favor one paw over the other, but with a little training, they can learn to switch leads effortlessly. This skill is invaluable in agility courses and helps your dog navigate turns safely.

Here's a fun and effective way to teach your dog this essential skill:
    What You'll Need:
3-4 jump wings or similar objects for your dog to circle around.
Your dog's favorite toy or some delicious treats.
An assistant to help keep your dog in place.
A space with non-slip flooring where you can be at least 30 feet away from your dog.
    Your Goal:
Learn how to guide your dog with your body movements, specifically turning your chest to signal turns from a distance.
Understand the timing of your cues so your dog knows when to switch leads and follow your direction easily.
    Your Dog's Goal:
Get comfortable following your cues from a distance and switching leads depending on the direction of the turn.
    How to Do It:
Start with your dog at one end of your space and you at the other, facing them. Use the jump wings or objects to create points your dog will navigate around. With the help of your assistant, release your dog as you use your chest to indicate which way you want them to turn. Reward them when they make the correct lead change and complete the turn.
This exercise not only strengthens your communication with your dog but also enhances their physical agility. Young puppies usually pick up on this quickly, but older dogs can learn too, with a bit of patience.
Give it a try! It's a fantastic way to bond with your dog while teaching them a valuable skill that will benefit them in all their future adventures.
