    Hi Morgan, just fell into a hole of your gamecube repair videos. I'm having my own issues and would like to try my own hand at fixing my own cube. The cube starts up and will play for as long as 30 minutes before the disk just stops spinning. Any idea what I should look for first when I open it up?

      My GameCube was doing something similar, pot adjustment worked for me. I’ve read caps can go bad too, so something to look out for

      Hi there! Sorry I am just now seeing this. First make sure there are no obvious debris on the lens of the laser. This is often overlooked. Upon opening the console, observe how the laser moves by watching and listening. If you notice any loud grinding noises or strange movements, there could be debris in the laser track. The laser should slide quickly, but smoothly along its track. You will hear some noise from the plastic gears. This is normal. If all checks out here, it may then be worth tearing into the optical drive and checking the resistance of the POT. Sometimes lowering it a hair can get the console reading properly again. I am learning more and more about the caps aging out and going bad. It may be worth performing a capacitance check if you have the proper multimeter. However, for those in a pinch, a simple pot adjustment will get the GameCube working again in many cases. A working GameCube is definitely better than a non-working GameCube. If all these checks do not solve the problem, a laser replacement may be in order. I will be posting a tutorial about this repair soon. Let me know if you have any other question. Hope this was helpful! Thanks for watching!

    What do you suggest if the pot is reading 0.5 ohms and turning it does nothing?

    • @morganmend
      @morganmend  5 місяців тому

      I wasn’t aware of this during the making of the video, but there is actually an in line resistor which prohibits the POT from being adjusted any lower than 150 ohms, even though the pot may read lower. I suggest resetting the pot to around 450 ohms. From there, try dialing it back once again in very small increments. If you still have no success, you may want to look into performing a capacitance check on the optical drive capacitors. They are aging out and causing issues. Hope this helps.

      @@morganmend It's probably a cap then, as my meter stays on . 5 ohms no matter how I adjust the pot. Thanks for the reply. While I'm at it, a small piece of advice, blacking out the addresses on the shipping box do no good if you don't do the same to the tracking number.
