Great video on how NOT to adjust SU carbs. A peek into the workshop maual will help you. The dampers must be in place, vac advance removed, etc. The carbs have to be balanced with dial gauges and the float level checked. Anyone watching this video willget you in trouble. Notice the rubber hose used on the stove pipe which is above the exhaust manifold.

Extraordinary appreciation! I just bought a 1968 LHD USA Fixed-Head Coupe. It is running great, but no brakes as well as all the other "needs" you mentioned on yours! Your enthusiasm is important to me as I move ahead!

Thanks! Congrats for your purchase as well - and hopefully my videos can help you wrench on yours :) Btw there will be a video on the brakes and hydraulic system coming up in the future.

Well done 👍🏼 congratulations! I really like watching you grow more confident with it .
    Two things …
    1. You asked what a properly tuned Shadow should perform like..... They are certainly not what you would call ‘quick’ in modern terms but they should be smooth, quiet and peppy. They should 'step off' and accelerate smartly. Shadows should have no problems at all keeping up with modern traffic. Looks and sounds like you have got your car to that point ( albeit the exhaust needs attention however the engine sounds suburb ) They are geared and setup for smooth, powerful torque rather than outright ‘speed’. Anything more than about 140klms can be utterly terrifyingly given how vague and light the steering is and that's from the factory..... lol :)
2 . Can you please turn the eyeball chrome air vents on the dash around. It’s doing my head in 😂. You are looking at the back of them… someone has turned them around so the rear is facing forward towards you. They are chrome plated brass and highly polished, you should see the whole vent. They will swivel around in the aperture for you. Give it a try.
    Cheers

      1. Thanks, good to know! Now that I've driven it a little more, I can say it does have power, but it comes on gradually, not jerkily. It's definitely good enough to cary around that boat of a car.
      2. Oh really? Ok, I'll try turning those vents over - didn't realize they were supposed to have chrome on them.

@@ClassicAutoLtd yep they are solid brass and then chromium plated, they will last forever! 💪

Hi there. Just found your videos on the Shad. Nicely done. I also bought a Silver Shadow and everything related to Rolls was new to me. Never overhauled a carb before, but it worked out pretty well. Easy. When well maintained, the Rolls is pretty reliable. Cheers, Chris

    Well done on your tuning.
Can I suggest you use a length of hose to listen to the flow. Hold one end of the hose over the hole with the caps off and the other end to your ear. This helps to eliminate a lot of the other noise.

Thanks, I'll try that! I was indeed having a hard time hearing any difference as I rotated the air adjustment screws.

Well done on your carburettor tuning. When you fix the exhaust it will magnify the experience for you , increase even better throttle response with better back pressure. Keep her going . One of few cars that makes you remark , “ I’ll just pass these peasants! “

    Great instructional video.
Pictures are worth a 1000 words.
Buy a set of Dial gauges from Kelly Opfar @ British Tool Works.
Simply screw into Dash pots and balance them easily.
    Loving the series.
All the best, Eric from Australia.

@@ClassicAutoLtd Actually I've been tracking along exactly behind you. I had the same sticky fuel pump solved with a hammer. And the same overflow fuel from float chamber - solved with a hammer. However unlike you, my mixture adjustment screw doesn't move the main jets - on both sides. They are fully stuck. Anything you encountered on how to free up main jets? I've seen about vaseline and ease them up and down on the mixture screw, but I have zero movement. I'm guessing penetrating oil.

Great job on the tuning for a first attempt. I had a RR Silver Shadow 30 years ago and out quickly it wasn't like any other car I'd had before. I joined the Rolls Royce owners club, this helped with technical issues and locating parts that were required. Looking forward to part 7. 🤞

Dont forget to adjust the idle air screws

    • @ClassicAutoLtd
      @ClassicAutoLtd  Місяць тому +2

Thanks, yes, I did that in the beginning of the procedure. It's the first step in the manual... but the problem is that I can't really hear much of a difference in the "hissing" sound when I turn the screw. So in the future I plan to get a gauge to attach at the top of the suction chambers to make sure the 2 carbs are balanced. For the last attempt at tuning, I left it with the static settings for the air screws - all the way in, then 1.5 turns back.

Go for a drive if you think everything is properly adjusted with your carburetors.
and then you take out your spark plugs and look exactly at the color.
hey, it's important that you look carefully at which cylinder which spark plug comes from.
You can then read exactly from the spark plug color whether the rolls are running too rich or too lean.
good luck with the rolls friend
