- In Part 7 of the series Stop Buying Bees, We will be installing our grafted cells. This video is of a little less quality, due to the rain, battery issues and darkness. We were able to get the cells installed into the splits we have been working on. It is our hopes that there will be enough drones flying and congregating to support proper mating of our queens. If now we will have to perform the process again of rearing queens and start the process over. We have noticed some drones flying but it is early in the season for us. We are pushing as hard as possible to meet our goal of 32 colonies from the original 2. We apologize for the lesser quality of the video and the bad weather conditions. Queen cells will not wait! I've never bought dropped cells in colonies, really seems like the way to go.
We like using cells! Mated queens definitely have their benefits, but cost, bulk bees, mating nucs etc is a lot to deal with. So we just use Our standard equipment

Craig, excellent real life beekeeping!!! Things never go as planned. Murphy's law will kick in every time. You were doing it in the dark,the rain,and no smoker but you had to get it done and you did. Your videos are the real deal right down to the improvised incubator with the water bottles and aluminum foil from your wife's kitchen. You show people how to get it done with what you have.

Hey Hope! There is a little flow on right now, some maples are still out there, henbit and such. The bees will be going into high gear.
Thanks so much for the series. What day would you recommend taking them out of the starter/finisher if you wasn't going to put them in a incubator.
I take mine out on day 14. Temperature changes, grafted larvae age etc can cause early or late emergence. So I like to play it safe.
Thanks for these videos. I hadn’t thought of doing a small number of queen cells as you’re doing. Do you have trouble fitting the QC into the protecter? They can be thicker than the protector and I worry about how to get it in. What’s your trick?
The can be a challenge for sure. I don’t have a trick. I just push them in as far as possible and hope for the bests some people say you can squeeze the cells to make them fit, but I never have.

You could try an end enclosed : 'Roller Cage' : Add that Cell*, Virgin hatches. But, you need to go back in a few days later to let "her out into the Bees" so she can merge, acquaint, fly out and Mate ! [Remove Cage]
Know 'old Boys' Beeks here in the UK 'made' Cell Protectors using a Finger, some Paper Pulp Mache (moulded/removed/ dried eg Newsprint/ School Glue. : Now Kitchen Foil works. Wrapped around above/or a rounded Dowel End. Remove, cut the Cone 'tip' off to allow access for 'Virgins to Emerge'. Add your Cells down into these 'protectors'. (But not Bees to Chew the Cell Sides itself ! Its the sides that need get chewed, thus killing a cell, so yes it needs protecting ! *)
Think they used a Long DIY Wood Nail across the x2 Frames to keep it in place : hanging down in between these said Frames. Guess a Cocktail Stick (Toothpic) might do the same. Do pierce thru that Faux* Cell Protector very carefully above the Wax of the Cell itself. . . 😉 Good luck.
[Plastic ones either to Narrow, as said.] Or they Sell Out ! Doh

For us Folk who don't have Crickets : Can you get a better Mic (Audio) to capture your Narration. . . rather than that Bush 'critters !' It's SO loud (!)
Know Beeks in UK have Lapel Clip-On WiFi Mic inside their Bee Suit. Have you that option ? Can Camera Dude maybe see what footage 'looks' like (remember viewers could be absolute beginners.) So Close Up 'Freeze Frame' Still Camera Footage (could) be edited into the Video. See what's been 'identified or suggested. ' . . . Just saying. 😉

Sorry the background noise is a problem! We have a nice video setup with good audio! I’m just not very tech savvy. Maybe I can edit out some of the background noise or try a clip on mic! My camera guy is 11 so I will try to coach him and have him do some stills of of the important stuff. Your feedback really helps us try to make better content and we appreciate it.
