    Boss Katana 100 combo

    No pedals
No Tone Studio, no special microphones, no computers, no audio interface. Just recorded on my iPhone with a cheap lapel mic (Lav mic)
    Hope this helps 😀🤘

    Paul,
Thanks for demonstrating what a great amp the Katana is. IMO possibly the best solid state amp out there. Also, you proved that you don’t need a top of the line guitar to get great tone.
    Keep the videos coming!

I really like this step by step tone shaping video, especially with so popular BOSS Katana 100 MKI (I have it too). I think you should just add the same story with single coils and it would be perfect. But the tone shaping process is interesting with almost every amp. It is a chance to see an individual approach, expectations, search and final tone result. So we can also learn something new. There are not so many good tone shaping videos on the net. Well done, thanks!

Excellent! Yeah, if we were all playing at mega volume on a stage, we’d be dialing back the bass, and pushing the mids... but at bedroom volume, I think high bass and low mids really gives you that lovely warm tone that simulates the tones you’d get at stage volume 🤣

Late to the party, but I use my K100 head as a ref for my many guitar experiments.
My ref is the brown channel, with all knobs set to 50%, it just seems to be my happy place.
I have the 6 way switch, so I have a few other tones set up, but panel is basically the brown with all tones and vol / gain on 50%.
I have a JCM900 mk3 head, which also sounds amazing with all pots at 50 ( no preamp gain), but heavily attenuated with a Powerbrake, into a 10 inch speaker, probably my grail tone in fact. Katana is a fantastic amp for the price of a boutique OD pedal.

Ive got to say Paul after recently visiting your site and being new to the Katana i have found it invaluable for creating the sounds that i like, your style of playing and how your layed back approach to the non technical side of the amp to people like myself makes for easy viewing but what would settings sound like with single coils. I have purchased a used mk2 100w 1x12 and tried and failed with the Katana updates, tone studio and all manner of programing this amp its very nice to see someone get very good tones from the stand alone amp. Thank you showing the step by step way of creating decent tones.

Cheers Paul. Just got my Katana and really enjoying it. I use the clean channel for most tones. I add a bit of boost with the Blues Driver and sometimes pop the compressor in on the light setting. You’re spot on that the higher gain lead/brown options are not it’s strong point for blues.

Great point about the beaminess of the Katana. I found it terrible for that at my first rehearsal with my MK1 50w. If it sounded usable to me, it was ear shattering for my keyboard player (and potentially the audience). If it was bearable for him, I thought he had gone mad since it was atrociously thin and toppy for me.
Then I found an online article about beaming amps and discovered the Mitchell donut. Essentially a 12 to 14 inch circle of acoustic foam with a 3 inch or so hole in the middle. I made one out of foam for cheap and fitted it under the grille in front of the speaker. It solved everything. I could wander around and even stand ridiculously off axis and still hear a tone that I could live with. A game changer for under one pound sterling.

    • @paulstaffordcook8799

Nor had I @@paulstaffordcook8799. I knew players like SRV often stuck crosses of gaffa tape on their grilles and some Vox amps had wooden crosses covering the cone and wonder if they were attempting to solve the problem too.
But it seems this Mitchell fellah cracked the problem that seems to be specific to 12" speakers. Somehow their geometry encourages beaminess and the idea of COVERING the sides of the cone whilst exposing the centre seems counterintuitive, but it would appear that it is the bounce of audio waves off the angle of the cone that causes the issue.
UA-cam won't allow me to post a link but if you Google 'Mitchell donut' you should find some very convincing details about the experiment.

I prefer to connect my Katana (50w Mk2) to my laptop via the USB and use Tone Studio to setup tones. Works AWESOME! .. I have been able to get a nearly perfect EVH Eruption tone, a nearly perfect Steve Vai For The Love Of God tone, and many more. Coupled with my FS-6 foot switch, I can switch between my 4 loaded presets nicely. I also run my "volume" around 70-90% on the amp and use the "master" for my desired volume. This way I can set the "volume" level specific for each tone preset so when I switch channels the sound level is correct for every preset. Works like a charm! .. perfect every time! .. for a $240 amplifier, you simply cannot beat this little box. I'm now looking to pickup a 100w 2x12 to go with it. Can't beat the Katana for the price.

I heard the same advice...to crank the volume to keep the level close between presets. It has worked pretty well for me for the most part, but whenever I import a patch the volume is then way too low. Its a bit frustrating.

@@terrapin7777 - Whenever I import new presets, I first test them for volume, adjust the volume to what I want it to be, and then re-save the preset. Then it's always good the next time I want to use it. A little bit of a pain, but not much really since I usually do little tweaks to most preset anyway. I usually end up tweaking my own continuously. Little fine tuning here and there, then re-save it.

The microphone is just my iPhone, but with a plug in Lav mic, which was placed just out of shot (about 1.5 feet away from the amp’s grille cloth). So you’re right, it got a bit farty at one point. I’d describe the volume as a bit too loud for after 9pm.... but for normal afternoon noodling, I’d happily play that volume for a couple of hours whilst my wife is downstairs. Hope this helps 😀

Hi Erik. In a word, no.... I’ve always experienced hiss from the Lead and Brown channels. However, I’m a bit surprised you’re getting hiss from the Crunch channel.... I’ve never particularly noticed that. My playing tends to sit in the bluesy break-up tone spectrum, so I rarely venture past Crunch. My normal katana tone tends to be Clean channel, Gain up full and a quarter turn of the Booster knob. The latter definitely adds some hiss, but I can live with it, as it’s not too bad. If you’re a rock or metal player then yes I can see the hiss could be annoying at house volumes. I doubt it would be a problem at gigging levels though, especially once the song starts 😁

What you have to do is connect your amp to a computer, go to the Boss interface. There is a noise suppressor there that lets you adjust how much or little you prefer. The setting stays put on your amp without a computer connection.

I bought the 2/12 100 watt and i get a better rich warm compressed bottom with sparkly high's. what i would strongly reccommend is find a way to get into the Tone Studio! Find somebody to do it for you, if necessary! It is quite complicated at first. That way you can really dig into the fine settings. i know what you mean but, there is no other way i'm afraid. there is a compressor in the settings that will definitely allow you to emulate a tube tone! its worth the hassle, once you get it, save it as "Panel" and yuu'll have it every time you fire it up! best of luck!

    • @paulstaffordcook8799
      @paulstaffordcook8799  4 роки тому +2

Hi Thespry. Your first question regarding the Volume v’s Master Volume. On the Katana, I cannot hear a difference. Others may disagree. On a valve amp (which this is NOT), totally different story. The Master volume drives the Power Tubes (not the preamp tubes). So a Master volume REALLY high, and normal volume lower, will send the amp into good old fashioned overdrive and feedback. Think 60’s blues, i.e. Cream era Clapton, Parisienne Walkways, early Carlos Santana. But it’s crazy loud! Conversely, Master volume low, normal volume high, gives you a convenient impersonation of overdrive at much lower volumes, by driving the preamp tubes (not the power tubes). Most old amps from the 50’s and 60’s only had 1 volume. So overdrive, power and sustain was achieved by simply turning up to 9 or 10. Most modern amps have two volumes, for the above reason. Your second question - there’s not much difference between what your guitar’s tone pot does and the amp’s tone pots..... except of course that your amp usually has 3 (Bass, Middle, Treble), so ultimately more tone shaping can be done at the amp. Hope this helps 👍
