"Almost Christmas Means It Wasn't Christmas" - Why It's Great (Ace Attorney)

  • "Almost Christmas Means It Wasn't Christmas" is a now-legendary once-a-year meme. But what makes that scene so memorable?
Turnabout Goodbyes is definitely the toughest trial Phoenix Wright ever has to go through. And maybe even for the player too. Not difficulty-wise, but it’s the only time you lose. See, just before the scene I just showed, we lost. Miles Edgeworth was declared guilty. 2 or so hours, goes straight down the toilet. The only other time you lose really is when you want to lose. Here there is no precedent. It comes out of nowhere. But why does this scene work so well?

The more I think about it the smaller the technicality it is that he got off on simply because he presented it with such conviction that the judge just had to allow it. Also I love the fact that it's Larry. It could have been Miles, it could have been Lotta, Yogi or heck it could have been someone else entirely but no it's Larry the person who you saved in trial one coming back to save you.
Also You do loose at one point later in the series thou to be fair that is a different situation.

My favorite part of this scene was Manfred insisting the verdict was already passed down and the judge deciding to go back on it because he ultimately believes in the spirit of the law, not just the letter of it. It's a beautiful moment of character for him and why I respect him despite the fact a lot of people don't.

I particularly like that the fact Larry was listening to the radio at high volume using headphones immediately turns from a discrediting element of his testimony into an important detail strengthening your case for a different location of the murder.

  • @classydoctor5864
    @classydoctor5864 2 роки тому +53

I think the scene is really exciting as well because it leads to the first time the player has to deduce a pretty clever and completely pre meditated murder in the entire series. Cases 1 and 3 both had the killer reacting in the moment, and in case 2 Redd White's plan basically amounted to, "smash her face in and use money to cover it up, alongside a bad note." The use of Larry's questionable testimony to completely break the case is also really good at highlighting the ability of Ace Attorney to manage tonal shifts. I love it in the same way that I love things like the transceiver in Farewell, my Turnabout, or even the parrot testimony later in this case. For better or worse (actually, it's definitely for the better.), it's a moment that simply screams, "this is Ace Attorney!" while not being intrusive to the case.

This scene is one of the many reasons why it's the best case in the series for me, and why the first game will always be my favourite. The first Ace Attorney game is so different to the others because it's the game where it truly feels like you're truly alone against impossible odds and I feel this case is a perfect example of that. In the latest game you've got Apollo, Athena, Trucy, Ema, Maya, Edgeworth and more being on *your* side throughout (along with being a lawyer for years at this point so tons of experience) and you never feel like what you're doing is going to end badly, but this case is completely different.
It's just Phoenix and Maya with some arguments made that Gumshoe, Edgeworth and Larry are also on your side too, but every single one has a flaw that stops them from helping you fully (until they pull through one by one). Maya is having trouble channeling Mia this time (which sort of become her role in the game) but helps you massively at the end with the bullet she takes from Von Karma. Gumshoe is having an awkward time adjusting to helping you along with the difficulty of the police helping the DA but tries anyway which leads you to discovering the air tank with the metal detector (and the final piece of evidence too). Larry is mostly friendly support (until this incredible scene) and Edgeworth is too preoccupied with other things in his mind to truly help you (obviously for gameplay reasons, he can't say what really happened on the boat so he's just vague about it) until right at the end where he finally thinks you have a shot at helping him. So in the end, it just feels like it's Phoenix against them all until key moments like this pop up and you feel relieved that it isn't over yet.
The case itself is also brilliant, you're defending your former enemy in the games who doesn't want your help but needs it. You're up against his mentor who has NEVER lost a case in 40 fucking years. They raise the stakes so fucking high from Case 3 to 4 it's amazing how this wasn't something considered for a later game. You're trying to pick out anything from the testimonies that are being constantly shot down by the prosecution. It truly feels like nothing in the courtroom is on your side here but increased tenfold. When you pick out the tiniest bit of a contradiction through Von Karma's perfectly manufactured testimony you really feel like YOU'VE accomplished something.
Trying to get any information out of anyone was tough even outside of the courtroom, Lana wanted her scoop and wouldn't help you until she got it, and Yani Yogi was just being obtuse the entire time until the end. The 2nd trial is also heavily against you to the point you get a guilty verdict until Larry comes out of fucking nowhere and saves the day by giving you information that turns the case around. The 3rd day has you learning that VON FUCKING KARMA is masterminding all of this and to make matters worse when you try to prove this to him in the evidence room he just tasers you leading you to have nothing to show for your hard work with the exception of one piece of evidence that seems useless now.
The final day has you finally proving Edgeworth innocent by fucking CROSS EXAMINING A PARROT which also comes out of fucking nowhere, leading to a successful acquittal only for him to fucking turn that shit around and want to be tried for the death of his father on the FINAL. POSSIBLE. DAY. he can be tried for it. As Edgeworth apologizes to Phoenix in the lobby, he is completely unfazed and is checking the documents he has to try and prove Edgeworth innocent of it all. So, not only is Phoenix successful in proving Edgeworth was innocent of the previous case he is going to do the same for a 15 year old case no one was able to prove decisively.
When you start the trial for the final time, you learn of the bullet hole in the elevator and the scream of someone *outside* which completely turns the case around and when Maya brings up the fact Von Karma was there and he took a vacation for months afterwards the pieces finally fall into place and it happened:
    "The killer was........VVVVVVVVVON KARMA!"
And along with this information, he remains unfazed and even smiles through it. He *knows* you don't have any evidence to back up your claim until you fucking pull through with that single bullet you were able to take from him, along with the metal detector you kept from Gumshoe to prove it's still inside his body. He breaks down admitting it all as you've finally won. The hardest trial in the entire fucking game and you've beaten it. When you break down the case there's just so many things in that it's incredible to think it was in the first game.
Going through this game for the first time with no knowledge of sequels really makes it feel like this might be it, this might be the final case in the game and series. It's dumb to think of that now but playing this when it released for me was truly a different experience because all I knew of AA was the previous three cases and getting to THIS as an 11 year old just blew my fucking mind, and it's honestly why it's my favourite case in the series.

"The only other time you lose really, in this series, is when you want to lose."
I feel I should mention the third case of Spirit of Justice here. Some spoilers, though I'll try being vague just in case.
You get a guilty verdict there, too, when you REALLY don't want one, and the only thing stopping it from being a death sentence for the accused is being given MORE crimes to be accused of and charged for.
I felt like mentioning that because I feel the "rock bottom, nothing more to lose" scenario that guilty verdict + more accusations combo brings is neat. Of course the thing that puts you out of danger is MORE trouble.

In The Great Ace Attorney 1, you are supposed to find Magnus McGilded guilty. Because he successfully tampers with evidence, however, you find him not guilty. I just think that it is interesting the that the reverse of “found guilty but should be found not guilty” also happens.
