Here is another Don't: Don't be afraid of asking the police for directions or another way of help. The police are friendly and polite people who are willing to help you. Unlike some countries where the police can be harsh and jerks sometimes, this is not the case in Netherlands.

This is a good one. It is even one of the official tasks of the Dutch police. And I don't mean literally giving directions when asked, but giving service as whole. Dutch police slogan is: vigilant and subservient (waakzaam en dienstbaar).

Dark liquorice and herring is big in The Netherlands, most tourists dont like it. Some dont even try those. Dark liquorice is called Drop in the Netherlands.

You can change tourism. I've seen it happen in the small city of Valkenburg in the province (not county) of Limburg. In the eighties the town was swarmed with drunk youngsters every summer. Riots, vandalism, fights with the law, the full monty. Chaos and anarchy.
So the town decided to go for a new tourist. Middle aged, kids, elderly, wealthy. And it worked. I haven't heard of a riot in Valkenburg for 30 years.

Cycling in the Netherlands is a legitimate mode of transport. It's therefore equal to cars in that respect. In most other countries it's more of a hobby or exercise thing and treated that way by bullies. The infrastructure in NL is also designed for cycling, emphasising it's importance in society. As said, almost all drivers also cycle.

Yeah, this guy’s so right about Amsterdam. Half of my family’s from there, and I’ve been there about 100 times, but it does not feel like home at all. But, though it’s different, it’s a really, really cool and beautiful city.
Also, the drink gin comes from Amsterdam: jenever. There are a few small shops where you can taste it, very ‘Amsterdams’.

I'm from the north of the Netherlands and I went to Amsterdam last year. It's so packed with tourists I don't even feel like I'm in the Netherlands there!
If you want to visit the Netherlands without too many tourists go to Utrecht. Stunning city with beautiful buildings, churches etc. and has a lot of canals.
When it's warm I would reccomend a visit to our islands. ecpecially Schiermonniksoog. huge beaches and gorgeus nature!
Most important.....Rent a bike when you want to explore a city!

As someone from Brabant I'd have to agree... Saying I'm from Holland is kinda offensive and the comparison to Scotland and England is kinda true aswel. We usually don't like it. We are from the Netherlands and to specify the most amazing province of all, Brabant JONGUH. 😂

Also take a look at the old Zuiderzee villages. Such as Bunschoten-Spakenburg, a place on the old Zuiderzee near Amersfoort. And the river "de Eem". Now the newest province or Flevoland lies in front of our port. And that was also a change in life in Bunschoten-Spakenburg. The salt water became Fresh water. No more Herring and anchovies. But the resilience of my village is amazing! Now there are fish and bread stalls throughout the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. We have more than 320 fish stalls throughout the Netherlands alone. Greetings from Bunschoten-Spakenburg, the Netherlands.

About the restaurants, most people here find the American style of waiting annoying and stressful. You dont want someone coming over to your table every five minutes to ask if you need anything, disrupting your meal and conversation. Just wait for staff to walk by your table, and then wave at them if you want to order anything.
Its considered classy, when you sit down in a restaurant, to order a drink first and just talk for about half an hour before ordering, and then it will take some time to prepare the meal, so usually you wont get a plate in front of you for 45-60 minutes. You can always get some bread and garlic butter as an appetizer, sometimes its free, sometimes they charge you like 3-5 euro for it.
We also pay our staff above minimum wage, so restaurants will have less employees per customer, and they will be very busy most of the time. I worked at a bar for a bit and it is hard work to keep 50 people's glasses full with a staff of 3 or 4 people.
A tip; you can just ask for a glass of tap water and its usually free. If youre already spending money on a meal and several other drinks, they wont mind. Bottled water can be quite expensive, its a bit of a rip-off. If you order a whole bottle of wine you usually get a bottle of water for free as well and it costs less than ordering single glasses for a whole party.

And when you go to Spakenburg and Bunschoten, also visit the center of Amersfoort, very medieval. There are 3 medieval gates. The Koppelpoort is the most spectacular. Just check it on Wikipedia. Although my favorite one is Monnikendam. Both are water gates.
And try speculaas when you’re here again. It’s a bit like gingerbread. And take the cheapest one, they are the best.

Well there is one thing here in the Netherlands that I haven't seen in any other country. The Batavia Werf. (The Batavia Wharf) is a place were they build ships as was done during the 17th century. Using only techniques and tools that were available back then. They finished the trade ship Batavia which is now docked near it. And currently they are building the Flagship of De Ruiter named the Seven Provinces .

Theres a lot of museums. Some nice ones in Leiden such as the museum of antiquities. The Kroller Moller museum for modern art is located in a pretty rural forested area in the center of the country, you can rent a bike at the train station and go for a ride there. Delft has the Prinsenhof museum located in the building where William of Orange lived and was assassinated.
And nearly every city has museums with art from local famous artists and painters.
Many churches are also absolutely beautiful and are often open to the public on several days a week, so visit the church on the town square wherever you go. As well as the old town halls and other historical buildings, many are open for free or a small fee of a couple euro.

3:11 I agree with that. especially descending those stairs freaks me out. 18 to 24 steps per floor ( _yes, it's almost as steep as a ladder_ ) and those tiny landings make me envision an involuntary-quick-descent every time I need to go down one of these.

Personally I think the Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen, and Archeon Museumpark in Alphen aan den Rijn are pretty decent museums/parks Although I'm not 100% if they have translated tours yet...
They're both kind of hands-on museums about the history of how some dutch people used to live and work.

Do not forget to check out the beautiful Dutch country side.
E.g. between Amsterdam and Utrecht along the small river De Vecht. Especially in Spring or Summer time when flowers and trees are blooming and farm meadows are full of cows. Take a rental bike trip from Breukelen. This is quite different from cities as Amsterdam.

As a tourist that stays longer than a few days and you want to eat good food, try the non dutch restaurants. We have colonial past like most euro countries. Meaning that we have some mean indonesian, suranamese kitchens. Newer import kitchens would be middle eastern foods like kebab. The foods are not made by dutch cooks that copy, but are made by the people from those countries, therefore authentic and really tasty (if you go to the right restaurant).
We Dutch don't have real spectaculare food, just some tasty snacks, patato dishes, and lots of fried food. Try those, they are good, but don't neglect the other restaurants.

Almost every place has a mobile pin so you dont need cash for much, but if you want to buy fresh flowers or produce from a farmer, or visit a market on the town square, cash is still king! And its quite a bit cheaper than going to the grocery store.
I dont mind cashless shops and I understand why they do it with all the crime and robberies going on, but it is annoying if I pin 50 euro from an ATM to buy something with cash and then I cant spend the rest of it in some other places. Its still legal tender. They are legally obliged to accept it but the government doesnt enforce or change the law.

Dutch can be direct but they're seldom purpously rude. Asking why you are so fat is NOT considered normal. but If you ask 'do you think I'm fat?' you will get the truth most of the time. If you can't handle that....don't ask!

  • @TheSuperappelflap

Most foreigners dont like our salty licorice and pickled herring. Other than that the reception seems to be pretty positive of all the candy and snacks and different meals. We do have some other stuff people find absolutely disgusting like pickled pig brains, or steer ball soup, but we generally dont recommend stuff like that to tourists, for obvious reasons. Its also considered a bit old-fashioned to eat those things but its making a bit of a comeback to use all the parts of the animal in cooking.
Oh and most people from other countries would take offense to our smoked horse meat but its really delicious and what are you gonna do with old horses otherwise?

Yeah, im from Groningen (in the northern part of the Netherlands) and i absolutely dont like it when people say that i am from Holland.. No, im not from that part of the Netherlands and no, i dont live in that tourists and expats filled shitstain of a city called Amsterdam, which most of the foreigners only know. Which is funny because most of them think they only have coffeeshops in Amsterdam while you can get your weed from all over the country in which the weed is even much better quality than the tourist stuff they sell in Amsterdam. And yes, there are more clubs than only Ajax... Ajax even lost last season from a amateurclub in the cup tournament, which was celebrated all over the country. Holland is also just the 2 provinces where the politics only put their interest in.
