There were hits from the first four Crowded House albums and their last confer on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House came close to a spiritual experience for the tens of thousands that attended.
Totally agree. It was funny listening to the intro before he said the band’s name I was trying to guess who it was (as I always do on here) and I swear I got whiplash when I did a double take when he called them a “2 hit wonder”. I suppose it’s all about perspective- as an Aussie, Crowded House and Split Enz, were always a staple of the 80’s charts. I’m glad I was in Australia if it meant I may have otherwise missed out on them.

Message To My Girl is a hot summer day in Regional NSW in 1990 played by the boy I'm still with. It's such a beautiful song. For Crowded House, 4 Seasons in One Day is just as beautiful. I also remember Neil Finn did an accoustic version of Billie Jean on the Andrew Denton Breakfast Show that was just gorgeous. I could go on and on because Neil Finn is a genius!
My thoughts too! I'm Australian and love Split Enz, then and now. Tim also had success as a song writer prior to the mid 80s with the Puberty Blues soundtrack
I was going thru cancer treatments in 2023. Every time I was strapped in at 2pm daily this song came on the radio overhead. Every day. I really attached myself to it and used it to remain positive. I was very lucky to have had the chance to spend the day with Crowded House in 1988. I was stationed in Mainz, West Germany and Crowded House came to play at a local music hall. I was given a day's leave, so I went down to the music hall in the morning. I had only waited a few minutes before their truck pulled up. Their road crew manager allowed me to help them out. Neil, Nick, and Paul arrived about 1:00pm. I was awestruck and tongue-tied when I was around Neil. They were touring for their second album "Temple of Low Men" at the time, and I had memorized every note and lyric, so I believed at that time, (and I still hold this belief), that Neil was one of the greatest songwriters of all time. His guitar playing was fascinating and mesmerizing. I remember talking to Nick Seymour for hours about music, growing up in America versus growing up Down Under. I remember wrestling with Paul Hester, until their manager came running up and screamed at me not to hurt their drummer. I got to harmonize with Neil during their rehearsal before the show, and was aloud to see them backstage just before the show. Their roadcrew manager told me that if I could get myself down to Australia after my gig with U.S. Army was over, I could work with their crew full time. That never happened, but I often wonder what would have happened if I had taken him up on the offer!
I just found this CD in a resale shop and bought it again after many years. I used to cry myself to sleep after my divorce because everything was falling apart and now I’m remarried coming up on 16 years to a man who was madly in love with me since the 6th grade. He was too shy to ask me out but he walked me home and carried my books, he asked me to our 20 year reunion and we were both newly divorced going with him was the best decision I ever made. Now when I listen to this song I hear nothing but determination and love funny how things change. Thank you for such a beautiful song that can evoke such emotions.

Most people aren't even familiar with the ubelievable catalog between Crowded House now incuding his sons, Split Enz, Neil Finn solo albums, The Finn Brothers, and if you haven't seen or listened to 7 Worlds Collide you are really missing out. Any project he would be a part of would be top notch, I know that. Thanks, Prof for highlighting this epic song and the beautiful artistry behind it. You are truly a "rock" for us during these challenging times.
Don't Dream It's Over was just another outstanding hit in a string of hits. All of the songs you mentioned made the top 10. They had hits from all of their albums. Both Neil and Tim are great songwriters.
This was such a great episode. That song is so timeless - so many songs get “old”, but this always seems new. Such a beautiful song. Loved to hear Mr Finn talk about it.
Split Enz/Crowded House, are national treasures that we Australians know are from New Zealand, but also claim as our own (we have a habit of doing that). So many good songs, there's a reason Neil is now part of Fleetwood Mac (not to forget the rest of the bands members, they are all amazing musicians). Message to my Girl, also another great tune. Such a great love song in every sense, is easily one of my all time favourite love songs.
Hearing Neil say that at the heart of the demo was the Māori strum, blew my mind. Even though in the song it’s so obvious, I just didn’t expect it. So dope! 🖤🤍❤️
Six months in a leaky boat came out at an unfortunate time. They were hoping to break into the UK, but the UK went to war with Argentina over the Falklands. That song was deemed not appropriate for airplay in the UK with the Royal Navy's involvement in the conflict.
@gadgetman_nz4092 that does happen. I reckon I have at least 6 different versions of "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" on various CD's including the Enzso version. One of Tim's best songs for Split Enz. The Finn Brothers have such a great back catalogue.
Crowded House had many hits in Australia and the UK. Great band i was fortunate to be at their last concert at Sydney Opera House and the last song as i recall was 'Dont dream its over' and almost the whole crowd started crying, a magic moment.
Absolutely Loved this interview, so awesome getting to hear right from the artist. SO Glad you and your team do what you do.Thank you Adam! What an amazing nonprofit to be a part of❤❤❤
Great interview. Finn Brothers, The Enz, Crowded House . . . say no more. What is also spectacular is that Dad Neil, can stand up and play Glastonbury with his two sons . . . . and every song will and does resonate with a huge international audience joining in with chorus, vibe and appreciation. Hats off to you both, Tim and Neil for wonderful songs, concerts, albums and I am hopingthat your world continues to shine. Thankyou.
1987 was my senior year in HS. Every time I hear it, it's like I'm driving around in my hometown in my dad's car. Such an underrated band - their greatest hits album, Recurring Dream, is fantastic.
I was a big fan of Split Enz in the early 80s and liked Crowded House in the late 80s. As an American, I hadn't realized Crowded House was connected to the Split Enz. Neil is so modest and genuine. Thank you for letting us hear about his songwriting. I agree with him that his voice is actually richer now than as a youngster.
That is an absolutely beautifully done song! Regardless of how it's presented, it'll always touch me. Full of positivity. Don't ever give up! Loved the interview Professor!
Thank you. Crowded House is my absolute favourite band of all time, and I have seen them a couple times in the eighties and early nineties. My friends and I waited outside after one of their concerts, to meet them. We did, they were the nicest men. They signed autographs and shared their pizza. I was so thrilled to talk to Paul Hester ( RIP), he had a wonderful sense of humour and called me Red😊 This was my very best memory from my high school years
I'm Aussie, this song is still part of the soundtrack of my life. I was a teenager in Brisbane when Crowded House came on the radio. Still play them and love them 💕💖 Neil's a genuine genius thank you 💖 from Australia xx 🦘
I’ve loved Crowded House ever since the Split Enzs! I LOVE a good Neil Finn song. One of the BEST Lyricists!! My fav song by Crowded House is Better Be Home Soon. GREAT FRICKEN SONG!
I’m from the United States, and Crowded House has been my favorite band since 1987. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve seen them, and Neil Finn solo, from the original tour all the way through the current Gravity Stairs tour. I would never dismiss them as a “two hit wonder”. To me, their music is sublime and Neil Finn is the most talented songwriter going. I hope the new renaissance of the song will encourage a new generation to give their entire catalogue a listen. At the most recent shows, it was wonderful to see fans from all generations. Long may they continue to put out spectacular music.
i can´t put into words how much i love "fall at your feet" i was head over heels for this girl back then and that song hit me like a ton of bricks, and chocolate cake was such a banger, love crowded house
It is a timeless song. Every generation has a precious few d so songs that speak to us time and distance. Thank you for your interview. His reflections only add to his creation.
Had the opportunity to watch Crowded House last Wednesday down here in Christchurch NZ, an amazing experience that I recommend to anyone who gets the chance, peace
I watched Crowded House live in Christchurch, NZ just four days ago. This is one of my favourite songs of all time. When Neil, now with his two sons Liam and Elroy in the band (How cool is that!) sang this it brought tears to the eyes, not through sadness but through the thrill of hearing it live in 2024, sung just like the original. Neil Finn and Crowded House are timeless.
Wow, hearing this again gave me nostalgic tears for the 80s, living overseas and listening to Aussie music, which of course had to be imported. I love both Split Enz and Crowded House.
Listening to music as a kid in Australia in the late 70's and 80's was such a great time, we would not only get the "good stuff" from the States, Canada and the UK, but we would get a lot of great music from home and the Kiwi's that the rest of world seemed to miss out on. Split Enz was one of those amazing Kiwi bands that should have dominated the world in the early and mid 80's yet it never came together for them, but from the ashes of one great band came another, and they were able to achieve some international success with an amazing song and album. 'Don't Dream It's Over' is a masterpiece, one of the very best songs from a great decade of music and it's great to hear that it's loved and appreciated nearly 40 years later. Congrats Neil.
Prof, I can't talk about Crowded House or Split Enz in this small space. They've had too great an impact on my life. I'm just grateful for it. Thank you, Professor. This may be my most beloved of your videos.
I really liked that band...but I loved Split Enz. DDIO is a great tune...all of those great songs hit #1 up here...what a great era for music. I'm so glad I was born in 1964 that I got to hear all of these great songs when they first came out. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁
I love Crowded House! Such a great band. I like "World Where you Live" and "Something So Strong" as well. I had this album on cassette tape in the 80's. So many Great memories dancing to these songs at High School, and summer camp dances. Thank you.
Neil's a genius and obviously a legend in this neck of the world. Thank you for highlighting his huge talent and the great band that Crowded House was - and in it's new form, still is. 🙏
I was lucky enough to see Crowded House last weekend in Adelaide, they were absolutely fantastic, Neils voice has got better with age. Just brilliant ❤
THANK YOU SO MUCH!❤ Just when I thought I couldn't go higher, when you had Benny Mardones on, and Into The Night, brought me to tears of Joy...You hit it out of my park's heart, with Neil and Crowded House❣️ I am years older, but I swear to you, not only me, but millions of us instantly feel as strong in our hearts and soul, as we did first hearing Neil and Benny. THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤
Great track. And of course should not be forgotten that the other founding member of Crowded House, Paul Hester was only 46 when he took his own life. He was also a big part of this song and the band''s success.
As an Aussie you can't find a better band that crowded house loved these guys since the 80s. Don't dream it's over us my all time fave song. The guys are still going strong today. Proud Aussie. Love these guys. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow great interview, I love Neil finn’s voice, so much melancholy, feelings and tone. They have plenty of great classics but don’t dream it’s over is one of my perfect songs! I can listen to it every day and feel the same thing I did back in the 80s in Honduras my home country!
The world needs more Neil Finn's!! I love when artists get behind projects that can help to change our world. Such a great interview, love it when he played a bit of the song and realized this song would be fantastic acoustically too. Amazing he wrote the lyrics in one sitting seems like a song that the lyrics were poured over for months
@@ProfessorofRock there's a great idea for a future video brother! The greatest two hitters of all time and you could even do two of them or maybe a comparative list comparing two hitters from the same album versus the Oh-so rare, two hitter from different albums.
"Something So Strong" and "Don't Dream It's Over" both live in my head to this day... I often burst out in song singing both of these tunes through random times of the day.
This song instantly made an impact on me when I first heard it and it is still so relevant to how I've lived my life, and how I deal with/ approach things in my life.
Interesting as an Aussie to hear them described as a "2 hit wonder". They were part of the soundtrack of my childhood and their music is timeless. They were part of a great time in Australian music
Delighted that you highlighted (in my opinion) one of the greatest songwriters of my generation. Have been a fan of CH since the beginning. I have never missed a gig in my home country of Ireland, just recently seen them and they delivered as always. They have lasted through the decades because of their timeless melodies & lyrics. The Together Alone album is my favourite of all time and song 3 (Nails in my feet) is my go to song regularly. Loved the interview, thank you
Love you, Prof! I love your passion for music and your humility. You are purely inspired by the music here. Split Enz and Crowded House have had a deep impact on my whole life. They were always there. I'm 53 and there was always a song of one of them that made the soundtrack of my life. My associations with it all have nothing but joy, awe and profundity. 'Don't Dream It's Over' is very much part of this. It is transformative; it takes the listener on a journey.
I was in love with Split Enz in my school days, and am pretty shocked they didn't chart higher. Just listened to "Message to my Girl" picking up my son from band practice...
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980Right!?? How about 6 months, I got you; One Step Ahead... they had hits for all us fans, for sure! MTV was favorable to them in my eyes!
I saw Split Enz a few times in the mid 70’s with all of their weird make up, along with the amazing AC/DC with Bon Scott and also Skyhooks at Festival Hall in Melbourne Australia when I was 14. Mind was blown and it started a love affair for me with AC/DC and Bon, but later Crowded House came out with Message to My Girl, still one of my favourite songs of all time. Gosh we were so lucky!!!
OMG Professor! I have always loved this song. As a child of the 70s and 80s it’s one that resonated with me very strongly and still does.(I actually have tears in my eyes, listening to your entire segment and had to keep going back.) Andand bravo getting this interview!😂
One of the greatest songwriters ever. Distant Sun is my favourite of his and in my top 3 or 4 of all time, but Don’t Dream It’s Over is right up there.
Split Enz is one of my favorite new wave bands of the 80's and Crowded House became a favorite band as well especially with Don't Dream it's Over which was used in the the original mini series of the Stand and evey time i hear it i think of the Stand thanks Professor.🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶
Thank you for this precious and priceless interview with Neil Finn❤❤ This song has always been extra special and bittersweet in my life ,,and I did rewind to write the lyrics when it played on the radio 😂❤❤❤ thanks Professor ❤❤
This is one of my all time favorite songs. My favorite verse is “Now I’m walking again to the beat of a drum and I’m counting the steps to the door of your heart”. So beautiful!!!❤
Their appearance on the Letterman Show performing "Now We're Getting Somewhere" left a strong impression on me at the time. I still watch it to this day. "Sister Madly" as well.
CROWDED HOUSE!!! Another super song from the 80s. Very sublime lyrics. Running late today, but grateful to get another cancer-free visit today. Thanks for this forum Professor. ❤️
I feel a bit sad that we are looking at songs from 50 years ago, not just from boomer sentiment but for the fact that today's music is kind of a mess, there are still gems today but its amid a tsunami of mediocrity, decontextualized and recycled

Crowed House are kind of the Aussie version of Tragically Hip or Golden Earring. Super popular in their home country, limited success elsewhere.

So dope! 🖤🤍❤️
Agree. As a NZer the strum felt so familiar. Now I know why - Maori strum.
In its infancy, MTV played Dirty Creatures, I Got You, and Six Months In A Leaky Boat. I've loved Neil and Tim Finn since then.
I got you, History Never Repeats, One Step Ahead all heavy rotation early MTV. Great songs.
Six months in a leaky boat came out at an unfortunate time. They were hoping to break into the UK, but the UK went to war with Argentina over the Falklands. That song was deemed not appropriate for airplay in the UK with the Royal Navy's involvement in the conflict.
He writes the most beautiful melodies.
Dirty Creature is a Masterpiece
@gadgetman_nz4092 that does happen. I reckon I have at least 6 different versions of "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" on various CD's including the Enzso version. One of Tim's best songs for Split Enz. The Finn Brothers have such a great back catalogue.
Crowded House had many hits in Australia and the UK. Great band i was fortunate to be at their last concert at Sydney Opera House and the last song as i recall was 'Dont dream its over' and almost the whole crowd started crying, a magic moment.
One of the best songs to come out in the late 80s. Thanks Adam.
Indeed!
I agree. So many great songs. Including Fall at Your Feet!
They play this song A LOT in the Menendez Brothers Netflix series. I forgot how great it was. Series is good too.
@@ProfessorofRock Better Be Home Soon is another great one.
I prefer Split Enz.
I also graduated in 87 and even though I didn't have the album there was a lot of great songs from it
I was a big fan of Split Enz in the early 80s and liked Crowded House in the late 80s.
Thanks Cheryl! Glad you enjoyed it!
I love how Professor looks star struck in all of his interviews, smiling from ear to ear, a giddy fanboy :)
Totally agree
Indeed. One of the best of the 80s!
Neil is a songwriting master.
That whole album is fantastic. Don't Dream It's Over is just...perfection.
Neil and Tim Finn zre cultural icons in NZ, Their contributions in the landscape of NZ music alone are legendary. Absolute treasures.
i can´t put into words how much i love "fall at your feet" i was head over heels for this girl back then and that song hit me like a ton of bricks, and chocolate cake was such a banger, love crowded house
Such a great song and my favourite of theirs with DDIO a close 2nd.
Great song.
It is a timeless song. Every generation has a precious few d so songs that speak to us time and distance. Thank you for your interview. His reflections only add to his creation.
As soon as you said Split Enz I knew, it's Don't Dream It's Over. When you hear "There is freedom within" you know that EPIC chorus is coming.
It's such an epic chorus! One of the best ever!
I Got You
Better than any of their Crowded House music.
Cool name by the way, not many of us out there.
@@dukecraig2402 YESS. I got You is an awesome song too, I discovered it through the Simpsons.
@DukesMusic84
I discovered it in high school in 1980, which makes me, OLD!!!
Also I love the line “trying to catch the deluge in a paper cup.”
Saw Neil and the band in concert this week in Christchurch NZ, such a rich catalogue of songs, great concert.
One of the most enduring songs from the 80's, I can see why people would wish they had wrote such a classic
Amen!
Had the opportunity to watch Crowded House last Wednesday down here in Christchurch NZ, an amazing experience that I recommend to anyone who gets the chance, peace
Very glad you covered this, Adam. This song was kind of the unofficial theme for my senior year in high school. Always conjures really great memories.
My favorite band, and Neil is my personal Music God. The man is songwriting gold. AND reportedly THE NICEST man in music.
I prefer Split Enz myself.
Just saw him and Crowded House a few days ago in Dunedin. 👍
I agree with everything you just wrote I’m from Australia grew up in the 80s their lyrics gave support and hope and message “ keep trying “. LW
Neil and Tim are very talented brothers.
Prof, I can't talk about Crowded House or Split Enz in this small space. They've had too great an impact on my life. I'm just grateful for it.
Thank you, Professor. This may be my most beloved of your videos.
I totally agree!
I really liked that band...but I loved Split Enz. DDIO is a great tune...all of those great songs hit #1 up here...what a great era for music. I'm so glad I was born in 1964 that I got to hear all of these great songs when they first came out. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁
I’m with you - I was a huge fan of Split Enz.
I Got You by Split Enz never gets old.
Canada gets it right!
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened....
As a New Zealander I grew up with this music, still play it today. It remains timeless.
I like the way Neil Finn constructs a song. From the first time I hear "I Got You" by the Spit Enz I've been a fan.
So good!
And that was a wonderful start!
Masterpiece. The song has a hymn-like healing quality like McCartney's 'Let it Be'... great songwriter all round...
I was lucky enough to see Crowded House last weekend in Adelaide, they were absolutely fantastic, Neils voice has got better with age. Just brilliant ❤
THANK YOU SO MUCH!❤
Just when I thought I couldn't go higher, when you had Benny Mardones on, and Into The Night, brought me to tears of Joy...You hit it out of my park's heart, with Neil and Crowded House❣️
I am years older, but I swear to you, not only me, but millions of us instantly feel as strong in our hearts and soul, as we did first hearing Neil and Benny.
THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤
So timely this video popped into my feed because I drove through Te Awamutu yesterday, where Tim and Neil Finn were born.
Great track. And of course should not be forgotten that the other founding member of Crowded House, Paul Hester was only 46 when he took his own life. He was also a big part of this song and the band''s success.
It was hard watching Paul in the videos looking so happy, knowing what was to come
Well impressed with your content mate, keep them coming. 👍😊🌏🐬♥️
As an Aussie you can't find a better band that crowded house loved these guys since the 80s. Don't dream it's over us my all time fave song. The guys are still going strong today. Proud Aussie. Love these guys. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Aussies taking credit for Kiwi guys. Neil Finn is a New Zealander.
@ivydickson7596 indeed Neil is a new Zealander but we adopted him in Australia 🌏
@@ivydickson7596Crowded House is more than Neil Finn.
Calm down people. Let’s just say ‘US’ kiwis and Aussies. Jesus were a competitive bunch😅
@@ivydickson7596but Crowded House was fined in Melbourne with two Aussies so they started out as an Aussie band.
They are perfect words!
The lyrics are a life lesson.
Great song, which lends itself to gorgeous interpretations. The Stan Walker version is so good, I'm physically held in place while it's playing!
Stan Walker, a Kiwi ( Maori ), phenomenon !!
Crowded house is one of those great 80s bands that people often forget about
SO true. the best two hitter ever
@@ProfessorofRock there's a great idea for a future video brother! The greatest two hitters of all time and you could even do two of them or maybe a comparative list comparing two hitters from the same album versus the Oh-so rare, two hitter from different albums.
@@markbeebe125 I've already done it!
When I listen to that song I always hear Beatles lyrics. Would have made a great Beatles song. Freedom, in the paper today , Paper cup, long road.
"Something So Strong" and "Don't Dream It's Over" both live in my head to this day... I often burst out in song singing both of these tunes through random times of the day.
That song was so hopeful in a dark time for me... it helped me think about what's ahead... thank you
Highly listenable songs. Perfect to play at work
For sure!
Saw them on this most recent tour.. still magical.. learned to like several newer songs i wasn't familiar with.. just a fantastic show..
This song will always mean a lot to me. It not only reached #1 here in Canada, it became a perpetual standard. We've never stopped playing it.
Such a timeless song. One of my favorites back when it came out and more so today in these times. So many generations embrace this song.
I agree!
For sure.
I was in love with Split Enz in my school days, and am pretty shocked they didn't chart higher. Just listened to "Message to my Girl" picking up my son from band practice...
Or “History Never Repeats.”
I still have Message to My Girl in heavy rotation on my computer.
@@karenglenn6707 Message to my girl was a Split Enz song off their Conflicting emotions album in 1984, not Crowded House
One of the 80's greatest songs and a consistent selection in all of my playlists. Oh do I miss 80's music.
This song is a doorway to my heart. I fell in love with Crowded House as a child and have followed them since as well as Split Enz. Neil is a treasure
Brook Fraser did a superb version of Distant Sun on the album She Will Have Her Way ❤
I was 17 when this song came out and I've been a fan ever since. My children have been brought up on Crowded House. ❤
One of the absolute greatest song's of all time. Love it.
Temple of Low Men is a killer album. “Into Temptation” still gives me chills.
One of my favourites too ❤️
I love both Split Enz & Crowded House and have many of their songs (including World Where We Live) in my playlists
Split Enz is one of my favorite new wave bands of the 80's and Crowded House became a favorite band as well especially with Don't Dream it's Over
which was used in the the original mini series of the Stand and evey time
i hear it i think of the Stand thanks Professor.🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶
Professor of Rock: Wow! You are so right about the timelessness of this beautiful song. Thanks for illuminating it for us. ❤️
I loved Split Endz! So many great songs! Neil Finn is a great songwriter!
Thank you for this precious and priceless interview with Neil Finn❤❤ This song has always been extra special and bittersweet in my life ,,and I did rewind to write the lyrics when it played on the radio 😂❤❤❤ thanks Professor ❤❤
Always loved that song since I heard it. The imagery in it is fantastic.
I admire Neil Finn's work. His arrangement, voice and lyrics on Split Enz "History Never Repeats" is just brilliant.
I do like this song very much. My go to Crowded House song has been Better be Home Soon but this is my second fave.
CROWDED HOUSE!!!
Another super song from the 80s. Very sublime lyrics.
Running late today, but grateful to get another cancer-free visit today. Thanks for this forum Professor. ❤️
Amen! Thanks Roger!
That's good to hear! Congratulations! 😄
It's definitely an all-time great! I was a high school senior, and today when I hear those opening chords I'm back in that time.
Oh my goodness, this song brings me right back to '87. Fantastic and moving to me to this day.
I feel a bit sad that we are looking at songs from 50 years ago, not just from boomer sentiment but for the fact that today's music is kind of a mess, there are still gems today but its amid a tsunami of mediocrity, decontextualized and recycled
@bradmodd7856 You and I could talk about this all day long. What is made now is very depressing and ugly on many levels.
