- Dr. David L. Walters' monumental, groundbreaking and epic arrangement of "Spirit of the Bull" as played & performed by the 1983 Jacksonville State University Marching Southerners Band.
Our band(Holly Pond High School band) is playing this song, not for the first but for the second time in two years! Love this marching composition and the university playing it!!!! I cannot wait to march as one of your own Marching Southeners one day! Every time we rehearse Spirit of The Bull, the entire band literally screams with excitement.
The late Dr. David L. Walters was a musical genius. There was nothing he couldn’t write & arrange for marching band. Whatever it was .... if it came from him & his genius-level creative musical mind, he always made it sound awesome. Every style imaginable .... Spanish, Big Band Swing, Latin, Pop Ballads ..... you name it and if he arranged it, it was always KILLER ..... just like this chart right here. It really gets no better than this for marching band, and this chart is now about 40 years old and it still sounds good today for marching band. And the JSU Marching Southerners is THE finest college marching band in America.
We played this in Oxford High several times in the 80’s. Always a favorite
We played this back in High school back in the 2000 football season and it was so freaking good.

I played it I believe in 84 in HS. Of course this will never be played again in our current woke society.
Marching Southerner here, we play it every year for alumni week! Extremely fun piece for current and past members!
My niece's high school band is playing it this year
