- [TURN ON CC FOR ENG SUBS] This is a fan video for the Chinese drama Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace (如懿传 Ruyi Zhuan). It depicts Keliyete Hailan's (珂里葉特·海蘭) transformation from a timid and bullied girl to a powerful and calculating woman. She took down her enemies and gave them a taste of their own poison. Hailan is generally revered as a protagonist, but make no mistake that she harmed not only her enemies, but also innocents. I believe her character is more complex than just a simple heroine.
This edit was very difficult to make due to the sheer amount of clips and characters. 💀💀💀 Of course, many moments were left out because I could not cram 87 episodes into one video.
Some of the translations are my own and may be paraphrased for context. Other translations are based on existing subtitles, some of which I edited and localized for my video. There may be a few errors.

If Hailan's son Yongqi didn't die and he became emperor...As Empress Dowager Hailan would've been a force few would dare reckon with.
If the drama didn't have historical constraints, I believe Hailan would've installed her son on the throne.
Imagine the emperor was actually a good and just person.
Yanwan would be killed for her mothers crimes before she had the chance to kill yongqi. Yongqi would therefore become the best emperor. Also, yanwan’s schemes would not affect ruyi and hongli’s relationship (and ling yunche would likely become a successful guard) so ruyi would still be the empress. Hailan and ruyi would be joint empress dowagers!
This is a powerhouse combination if Ruyi & Hailan are both become Empress Dowagers and the Emperor Qianlong is still Emperor Emeritus while Yongqi is the current one where Qianlong trust Yongqi's decision making ruling the empire. While Ling Yungche and Enuch Xian Bao and Enuch Li are the powerful guards in the palace. The Qing dynasty will live longer.

Unfortunately, her son would not be emperor,because the emperor stated it’s not the legitimate child and in the end he didn’t make it because he was already dead. Also, you got a remember that crazy chick ling her son becomes the Emperor . unfortunately, ling is dead by then but who cares. And even tho ruyis child should have been the emperor the emperor changed his mind and didn’t allow it unfortunately.
Hailan is the winner in RuYi’s Royal Love. She didn’t reach the highest rank, and her son couldn’t become the Emperor. Yet she had a high position and she was stable. She didn’t have any demotion, and got away with many schemes without ever being caught. She knows how to play

Hailan is like.. my favorite character in the show. She doesn't care about things like morals when it comes to vengeance, she can use very low tactics to get what she want, but all she ever did was never motivated by ambition. She protected Ruyi and herself by using the same methods used by the bullies. I just LOVE her.

I swear, that moment she cuts the thread *with her teeth*, to me, that’s when the scared little kitten becomes the raging lioness. You can see it in her eyes: she’s done playing nice, done with being the good girl, and if she goes down, she’ll take down as many others as she can. Phenomenal acting in that scene!
The only real love that existed in that drama was Hailan and Ruyi's love and loyalty for each other. She will forever be my favourite.
And don’t forget, there’s few consorts that didn’t dare cross the line with Ruyi and Halian. So, some of them made the right choice of being a friend and ear to Ruyi and Halian, while the few that didn’t befriend, were killed, cast aside, or died by their choice.
Since some of us, will love the friendship and sisterhood that Ruyi and Halian is bound to, and the friendship-bound with their maids and servants too.

I feel like the emperor always have a soft spot for Hailan. Even when she was falsely accused and imprisoned, he made sure she wasn’t harm. Partly maybe because Hailan is the mother of his most competent and favorite son, Yongqi, but still, among the other concorts Hailan is the one he always repect till the end

Exactly. For example, when it was thought that Jia's dog killed Jingse, Hailan went to the Emperor and he did what she wanted done as punishment. It seems that if Hailan said, then it was true.

Absolutely he did . He probably felt quite a bit of guilt for what he did to her 😖. That being said, Hailan was very cautious around him and always said or did the right thing to make him feel at ease or better about himself ; simultaneously making herself look clever ( In this novel, the Emperor was always attracted to clever and somewhat sharp women while dumb whiny women annoyed or bored him to no end . Even the hookers he would sleep with were portrayed as clever girls who know what to say and how to act ) . Hailan had this aura of wisdom and calm around her which would always influence him and he never doubted her ( she always did her share to show him that she is right) . Also , she never showed a lot of ambition about stepping up or making her boy the crown prince , hence she never triggered his paranoia . And yes , he developed respect for her ; but Hailan absolutely gained it and worked for it .
0:09 In the book, the "seduction" Gao is referring to is the Emperor getting very drunk and violating the palace maid who happened to be there (Hailan). Ruyi convinced the Emperor to take Hailan as a wife in order to spare her even further shame. Hailan never wanted to marry the man who hurt her, but she had little choice. She was still grateful to Ruyi for giving a damn about her and saving her. That's why Hailan goes hard when it comes to Ruyi.
Yeah it seems the drama cut a lot out. Do you know why Hailan was viewed more favorably than Yanwan even though both were maids? Was Hailan's family background better than Yanwan's?
@@empresseseternelles My understanding is Hailan's background was better, but not by much. If it were, A'Ruo wouldn't have tormented her after Ruyi got locked up. I haven't had a chance to read the book myself. I only know details from other comments. It seems like Hailan moved up mostly because she was the mother of the Emperor's favorite son. In real life, Concubine Yu was rewarded with a new rank with the birth of her son. She was promoted further by the Emperor along with other concubines due to some event that I don't recall at the moment.

This explains so much as well as why Ruyi makes so many attempts to stop the Emperor from drinking (since she knows how he behaves under the influence)

I just love Hailan! She turned from this soft and gentle girl into a strong and ruthless woman who will not hesitate to annihilate her ennemies but who will also protect her loved ones at all cost. She stayed true to Ruyi until the very end, even when Ruyi distanced herself from her. Imo one of the most beautiful friendships in Chinese drama, along with the friendship between Zhen Huan and Meizhuang from Empresses in the Palace.
What in the actual hell! I got goosebumps the entire vid! Dramatic score! Quiet and meek are the deadly ones. Wow, how she held a grudge and went in on her enemies (even a kid. Chile, I'm scared). Fiercely loyal. Willing to give her life (drank poison while pregnant!) or take one (Yunche, Ruyi soulmate). Also, little mousey girl dolled up nicely. War paint. Emperor provided glam squad and Hailan made great use of them. Blossomed. Ask the other women in the harem.
Janine Chang, Hailan's actress did study law in real life so as you can see on the scene where Wei Yanwan's schemes are revealed, you can feel that she is like a lawyer and as a true advocate, it also reflects on her acting.
Although all the things she did was not right, but she did not do them out of greed or ambition, she did them all out of love for Ruyi. The only true love in this entire drama is only between Ruyi ans HaiLan.
It is why i love her for all of it.
I think there were a lot of other examples of true love. Ruyi and Ling Yunche's platonic love, Suoxin's love and loyalty for Ruyi, love for one's child, etc.
@@empresseseternelles True, Ling's love for Ruyi was that he was willing to die for her. Suoxin was willing to go through hardships and stay by Ruyi's side with her in the cold palace. But Hailan's love, to me, is considered the most extreme because Hailan was literally willing to kill for Ruyi.
But that is just me.

I love her (and the actress) so much. You just wanna hug her at the start but omg she is a Phoenix by the end, even if her morals are pretty grey. She becomes terrifying, but yet I’m still rooting for her 💜💜💜

Hailan is someone who inspires for sure. someone who was a victim for so long finally taking a stand and not allowing anyone to stomp her down ever again with a strong determination to take down the evil that hurt her and Ruyi no matter what the cost will be.

Beautifully edited, wow!! Hailan's story should be an epic in its own right. She was the driving force of the entire plot while Ruyi mostly sat idle. When you're trying to survive in the harem you can't always take the high road and that was Ruyi's demise in the end.
In the end she outlived and outranked all the b*tches who used to bully her

great edit! I really love Hailan's story. This was one of the very exciting arcs of this super long and rather depressing (and sometimes repetitive) story.

To me, Hailan devotion towards Ruyi is borderline scary at the end when Ruyi wants to finally move on and forgive and forget but Hailan's involvement in Ling Yunche's death broke Ruyi in a way that the 2 of them didn't expected... the grew apart.
Each time when the now more gungho Hailan wants to move forward, the more Ruyi retreated into her shell... it was so sad to watch.

In history, the Qianlong Emperor did not take another empress after his 2nd empress passed away. However, Lady Wei was posthumously elevated to empress after her son became the next emperor.
