Pain of any kind is the same for us all we can relate to. It is easy to feel sorry for the villain at that point but forget the web she spun for herself!
After finding out why she wasn't able to have a child, i started to feel bad for her. It may not excuse how she became twisted and cruel, but it sickens me to see how emperors wanted to appear perfect and godly while not wanting to be blamed. Here we see who the real villain of this story is.
My theory is that Hua Fei was originally not so cruel. The Emperor says she is not bad at heart, and Hua Fei also mentions that there was a lot of scheming in the manor. It leads me to think that she used to be more innocent, but then she changed to survive. Maybe the miscarriage was the final blow that turned her into a ruthless consort.

Even the main character lost her innocence and did lots of questionable things to survive though not to this level. You need to become cunning and ruthless to survive in there.

I love this! Hua Fei is the standard for all “evil” consorts she owned the room every time she was in it she had a swagger that was unmatched… even at the end u had to feel sorry for her (I did anyway)cause despite all her schemes from the beginning she already been checkmated by the person she least expected the man she loved 😢
She is one of the best villains for me as well. In the end she was as “evil” as she was because of the emperor. I also felt sorry for her in the end; her love for the emperor was sincere.

Remember she is the one who even got Cao to get pregnant. If it wasn't for her family getting too greedy and Zhen Huan looking like the first wife, she would've gone on to completely take over the harem. I have no doubt.
The one and only legendary iconic Consort of consorts in CDramas, Consort Hua! From her styling, walk, chilly voice, charm and elegant cold demeanor is perfection! Jiang Xin’s portrayal of Consort Hua is the Blue Print of the wicked consort in jungles of palaces filled with schemings, raging jealousy and tragic never ending trauma. I hated her for being stubborn and unrepentant but realized how much I loved her after her demise. Suddenly the show took a rapid slow pace and boredom engulfed the drama and it was never the same without her!!! And Jiang Xin cemented her status in CDrama as one of the finest actresses of this era👏👏👏

It's because they removed almost all the interesting characters at the same time. They should have kept Cao guiren because she had the potential to go against zhen huan. But no, we are left with the Empress ( who was the only interesting character left ) and the vengeful and cunning side of Zhen huan. Lingrong is okay, but the actress failed to convince me that her character was supposed to be timid but deadly.

Compared to the other ladies, there was no competition to Consort Hua, she literally ran that house( inner palace) even the Empress repelled in her presence. She was fast, intelligent and feisty, she could smell out a rat in a bunch of wicked concubines and knew how to chip their wings off before they could fly around like they owned eesh. She was a better match to go against the FL. If I were the director, I would have gotten rid of the Empress and had Consort Huo go head to head with the FL later to empower the conflict of the story instead of making her tragically exit quickly at a time when we the audience needed her the most!

Huan Huan became hard on the outside but deep within she displayed sensitivity as could be seen how she was with her closest confidants. As now the head of the palace she had to maintain a hard image in order to keep unruly behavior and gossipers in line. Huan Huan, in my eyes, didn't turn cruel but justly got even.

Are all the lines dubbed over then? I read that apparently the actress who played the Empress, didn’t speak Mandarin as her first language, so that’s why a lot of her lines were noticeably dubbed. In spite of all she did, I cried for Shilan in the episodes leading up to her death. The Emperor is a horrible husband and a despicable man. On a side note, I wish we would've gotten to see more of Xia after her beating.
I hated her, but in the end pitied her. To find out how she was betrayed! I think she genuinely loved the Emperor and it just broke her to know he prevented her from having children. BTW - LOVE your translations. Succinct and accurate.

The first Chinese drama that i watched completely was Yanxi Palace: its main antagonist in the first half (Gao Guifei 高贵妃) is a gentle soul compared to Consort Hua 😅 But even so I felt more sorry for Nian Shilan in her final moments. I thought ZhenHuan was going to lose her patience and burst and then deal the final blow but Nian Shilan ended up offing her poor self, and didn't even use the suicide options shes been given 😢
Hua Fei was definitely more fleshed out as a character, she really felt like a real person whereas Gao felt more like a cookie cutter villain. The significance of Hua Fei not choosing any of the offered methods of suicide and choosing her own way out was really powerful and shocking. 😭
I dont think huafei was ever truly “evil”. I thought she was mostly misunderstood and neglected. Even though she is still an antagonist, her behaviour can be seen through different points of view. Ngl she was still a super huge bitch but i really felt bad for how she was treated all along, as she actually had feelings for the emperor while many other concubines did it for power
Deep inside, I dont think hua fei was ever evil. She did it for her own survival, and she was shaped by the crowd she lived in. I could see in a certain point of view that hua fei is not evil ( but cruel and a show off ) and was the only one who really cared about the emperor to her grave
Because her brother is too talent at being a general which make the emperor afraid. Using a Chinese word to describe this situation is 功高震主. Which is very common in Chinese history. In real history Nian Genyao is the typical example of 功高震主 and 恃宠而骄. But in real history Hua Fei has at least 8 children but all died young. Her personality was completely different from that of the drama. Her personality in the drama is actually her brother’s in real history. But her life is still a tragedy in history.
While I do agree with you about the power of a consort, I don't think the power she held was exaggerated even though she was still a consort. She had a very piwerful political alliance which was her brother and the favor bestowed upon her by the emperor made her a powerful consort. Duan fei and Jing fei represented the real power of a consort.
