      I don’t use or like TikTok. But this will mess with people’s livelihoods. Some creators make an income there but not on UA-cam, and I empathise with them.
      Also regardless of my feelings towards TikTok, it’s always better not to have one company have a huge monopoly. But I guess TikTok being controlled by the ccp isn’t ideal either.

    As far as what you can do with this data. Monthly TikTok challenges can be used to test specific psychological profiles with the purpose of pushing the limits of disruption and violence. Video data is currently being scraped to build profiles for advertising based on items in the background, clothes you're wearing, cars you're driving in and the meta info about your location. Data lakes store this info and machine learning uses it to train known information against location and willingness to perform trend videos personally or share with like minded people. TikTok and other platforms provide a treasure trove of information that can be used to find and develop disinformation, subversive messaging and train future bots to promote or discourage behavior as the chinese government sees fit.

      LOL There are some big leaps in logic, technology and purpose there. A bunch of those things are already easily done, others are straight up jumping to conclusions and gotta also remember that AI companies can already scrape the website (as well as YT or anything else) for that kind of thing. Plus, that's the kind of thing the USA does, not China. They're not the imperialist nation waving a big stick around.

  • @mozzdog
    @mozzdog Місяць тому +5

    It's not so much of what they could do, twice they have had data breaches where user data that was supposed to only go to us servers was routed to chinese servers. On both occasions, congress asked for an answer and both times TikTok said it wouldn't happen again.

    • @enginerdy
      @enginerdy Місяць тому

      Oh dang, some traffic got rerouted through China? How about getting the other le ech tech companies to stop selling our data and the government to stop spying on us?

      I geofenced china out of my network since my firewall has whole country blocking features and I blocked china and tiktok still works...

    • @mozzdog
      @mozzdog Місяць тому

      @@remixedcat Correct. Typically, TikTok data is routed to servers in the US. In the case of these breaches, China fell back on routes that, for redundancy, sent US traffic to servers based in China. This was never supposed to happen, and the CTO of TikTok promised it would never happen again, until it did. During that failover, terabytes of user information was sent, collected and eventually stored on servers in China. They will never delete that info. Also, although there are audits on the US side, there is no real guarantee that the hardware being used in the datacenters aren't providing information back to outside groups. This has been a concern in the telecom industry for years regarding backdoor access to chips manufactured in China that are commonly used in almost all telecom equipment. The Chinese government has been caught using those backdoors on several occasions. Look to the 2018 data breach of how chips were added to telecom equipment and servers to access data in US companies. So.. It is not unreasonable that a Chinese owned company, operating out the US would not necessarily scrutinize potential security threats from the Chines government.
